New US$5.7 Billion Tourist Attraction: Dubailand

Tue Oct 28, 2003 12:12 am

After the Palm Islands here is the next major porject in Dubai, this time costing over US$5.7 billion:

http://www.dubailand.ae/

Giant mixed-use theme park comprising 45 major projects (plus 200 minor ones) in 6 “worlds” covering an area of land almost equal to Dubai city. Rain forest, ski slope, water park, equestrian centre, aviation display, art gallery, multi-cultural garden complex, the largest zoo in region, Pyramids, world’s largest shopping mall, full size “dinosaur” enclosure, several stadiums, golf courses and everything else you can imagine.

It aims to attract 200,000 visitors daily by 2010, which I guess that should help fill some Emirates planes.

Massive capital spending, to build a huge new resort from scratch... the precedents aren't good. How is that place in Japan going?

"World's largest shopping mall" is meaningless now. They don't have any more diversity than the average town centre; the stores are just duplicated over and over again as you walk through endless km of bland tiled precinct. I don't give a damn if a mall claims to have 2000 stores - at least 1000 of them will be Starbucks or Gap anyway.

The dinosaur enclosure sounds good, though.  Smile

I like Dubai, Its the bright spot on the other wise not so fun Arab world. I hope "Dudailand" works out. If any place would have the cash for something like this it would be Dubai.
Next time try the old "dirty Sanchez" She'll love it !!!

Sounds hideous.

But as the region becomes more affluent I see Dubai becoming the destination of choice for millions. In particular, as the Indian middle class expands, Dubai and Singapore will keep attracting this important demographic.
