Up Coming Mayoral Races

Wed Oct 29, 2003 10:48 am

Next Tuesday is Election Day in many big cites as well as three governors races in the South.

Our mayor Willie Brown is term limited.
We have three really good candidates with strong liberal credentials and one spoiled 'silver spoon' brat running.

Gavin Newsome (Newscum) is the favorite among the major media outlets and the mayor. The others are Tom Amminano; the gay comedian that forced Willie Brown in to a run-off four years ago.
Matt Gonzalez; the Green Party candidate who has a lot of good idea and is Board President
Angela Alioto; my favorite candidate. She is the daughter of fmr. Mayor Joe Alioto and her family own several restaurants in town. She is a Civil Rights Attorney and is favored by labor unions and other traditional Democratic groups.
I hope she can get in to a runoff and beat the spoiled brat (Newscum).

What's the scoop in your town?

Superfly, I can't believe you included a pic for our mayoral race. LMAO!

Fort Wayne-
Mayor Graham Richard (D) vs. Linda Buskirk (R)

This is a rematch of the tightest election in Fort Wayne history. Last election, the difference was just a handful of votes (literally!). It was so close, a recount was automatic. Right now, incumbent Richard has a 9 point lead over challenger Buskirk whom is the Public Works Director at the city. This campaign is nasty so far with Buskirk accusing Richard of letting thousands of manufacturing jobs leave the city. Richard fired back at her of course (and the media acts sooo surprised at the mudslinging). Both are similar on many issues and particularly big on downtown development, but their biggest division is how the police force is structured. Who am I voting for? I'm still not sure. Richard refused a debate recently and that ticked me off because I really wanted to hear their specifics for economic development (especially involving the airport). Richard has done a lot for econ. devel. especially downtown, but we did lose a lot of jobs. The police force did have some internal turmoil, but crime DID go down. As for Buskirk, I'd almost like to see if she can do better particularly for downtown. That is my big issue. I still think they need to develop our three rivers that run downtown like every other city does. We have these waterfronts that they just let overgrow with trees. What a waste! Also, I'd like to see someone begin a push towards legalizing casino gaming. A huge risk, but Casinos would be the shot in the arm we need. Unfortunately, we are notorious for having WAY too many NIMBYs here that bitch about EVERYTHING! Besides, neither candidate has proposed such a strategy anyway.  Sad But otherwise, both are strong and we should be OK regardless of who wins. I predict Richard will get reelected.

Houston, TX

Lee Brown is term-limited. The three leading candidates are Bill White (D), Orlando Sanchez (R) and Sylvester Turner (D).

Bill White is leading the polls, but Turner will get strong support from African-Americans and Sanchez from Hispanics (but will lose some Latino votes because he's a conservative). The race will be close and, in all liklihood, end up in a runoff.

I won't have to choose between them, I live just outside the city limits, but it's going to be interesting. There is a huge budget shortfall and alot of infighting concerning light rail.

Both Portland and Vancouver are electing mayors this year. Vera Katz has decided not to run again for mayor of Portland. I am not a political person, but I do know one person running is commisioner Earl Blumenauer. Royce Pollard is running for re-election in Vancouver. I don't know who else is running.

The City of Livonia, MI (one of the largest Detroit suburbs) is electing a new mayor, as current Mayor Jack Kirksey is out due to term limits.. It's Lyn Banks vs. Jack Englebretson.

In my city (Novi, MI) Mayor Richard Clark (R) is not running again due to poor health. It's Lou Csordas (R) vs. Michelle Bononi (R).

San Francisco hasn't had a Republican mayor since the 1950s and even he was liberal for the GOP.
