Good With Computers? I Need Help With Problem!

Sun Nov 02, 2003 11:09 am

Hey guys,
I'm looking for someone that is good with computers that could potentially help me or at least give me some insight into a problem. Whenever I run FS2004, generally my computer will either a) Blue screen with an error, or b) just reboot. I think the reason behind this is that my RAM is taken up and the computer doesn't know how to handle it. Mind you that this happens usually during the landing phase of my flights---thats generally when you have the most action going on. Changing views...clicking buttons....messing with the gear, flaps....etc. etc. Is there any way to get around this?

Thanks in advance!

Just to add on to this a bit-I did not have this problem with FS2004 before I had to re-install my operating system. My old hard-drive started sounding like an Oldsmobile 442 so I had to end up replacing it and subsequently putting FS2004 on the new one. Since I've done that, this problem has popped up.

Hey I consider myself pretty good with computers. How old is your computer? If your HD is toasting already, that might be a sign of some of the problems. Also, since you are still getting the BSoD (blue screen of death) I would venture to guess that you are running an operating system that is pre-XP. Another think to consider is the amount of RAM you have. 128MB is the bare minimum. If you are using it all up, you might want to pick up another chunk. Today's prices are the lowest RAM has ever been. You can normally get it cheaper than your reseller at Crucial.

If I had to guess, your computer sounds like it is currently operating at its limits when you have FS04 going. If you are using a machine that has 2yrs+ operating system, and especially hardware, with software written for some of the newest machines, that could easily be your problem.

Since you did not have this problem before your reinstallation, it could be the above and/or a simple install error. Did you have FS04 on a separate hard disk than the one you replaced, or did you install everything fresh? Try reinstalling FS. Be sure to follow up with how everything went, and if you have anything else to add. Best of luck.

First of all, your CPU or graphics adapter might be overheating. Secondly, I'd say that you might want to look into your virtual memory, since you mention it happening after you changed your HD. There may be nothing wrong with the HD, just it might not have as much dexterity as the old one. I suggest you upgrade your RAM so you do not have to rely on virtual memory that much.

Thanks for the comments thus far guys, but I don't think that my system is inept at handling FS2004. It handled it just fine on my old hard drive and with 392mb of RAM installed. This problem has only popped up (no pun intended) since I had to put a brand new hard-drive in my system and totally re-install everything. When the blue screen of death pops up it says:

ntos something .krnl

And then: Beginning dump of physical memory. Dump of physical memory complete.

Then I have to reboot.

Any more suggestions/ideas?

Edit: I'm using Windows 2000 Professional.

Your description of the error is too vague. Did the bluescreen also say something like IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL?

Try installing another version of your graphics drivers.

It says exactly that: IRQL is not equal or less. I'll go to nVIDIA's site and get a new set of graphics drivers and see if the problem resolves.

I'll let you know what happens!

Well, with new nVIDIA drivers installed: I didn't get the blue screen of death but the computer still froze.  Sad

Anyone? Anyone!!! Help!

I'm still guessing it's a graphics problem, but I can't come up with any quick fixes right now. Of course, you could try reinstalling stuff like DirectX too, but that's not guaranteed to help. Someone on a gaming website might be able to help you more if they've had the same problem.

Driver problems can be really annoying. I once had a hardware combination that just refused to be stable in Win2k. But your problem seems a lot simpler, especially since you know everything worked before.

Your hard drive is probably ok, but if you want, run chkdsk and maybe a RAM tester to make sure you didn't damage anything when you installed it.

If I may give my two cents...

FS is hardware hungry and for it to run smoothly, your PC has to be fine tuned to 1/128th precision...

Now, let's be rationnal here for a second. You didn't have the problem before you installed your new HD. Me think this problem is related to new HD.

Your HD might be running pretty well with all sort of other app. But FS, as I said, is not fault tolerant. I know, it does the exact same thing as you mentionned here. At first, the problem was the joystick driver. Fixed the problem with a new driver. Then I changed my graphic card, and I get the same problem again. Right now, there are no new driver with my graphic card; so I save my FS flights VERY often.

Check your HD installation; try alternative HD installation option. Make sure this HD is MS Windows 2000 compliant. Check the website of the HD manufacturer; they might have a new driver for it.

Good luck.
