Ever Been At A Game, Rooting For The Visiting Team

Wed Nov 05, 2003 4:32 am

Have you ever been in this situation:

Your favorite pro sports team has traveled to rival team's city. And you went to that game to cheer your team. Of the hundreds of thousands in the stands, you are in the minority. How did the other people treat you? Pour beer on you? Spit on you? Harass you? God help you if you were in New York! Big grin

I remember last January, no one here in Tampa wanted to fly up to Philadelphia to cheer the Bucs, cause they had seen the Eagles fans the 2 previous years behave awful towards them.

The last time the Saints played the Bills in BUF, I was rooting for my Saints. (The Saints won 24-6) I left the game smelling like Genesse beer.

I often will follow the Phillies to an away city to cheer them on, probably 3 or so times a year. It's also a really good excuse to fly somewhere.  Smile

Orlando Magic vs. Dallas Mavericks-(I was going to meet Shaq that night so I had to root for him)

Dallas Cowboys vs. NY Giants- I go to that game every year, I always cheer for the Giants, there are a lot of Giants fans, because many people moved from NY to Dallas

Rooted for the Spurs when they played the Rockets at the old Summit. Rockets fans couldn't care less, there were other Spurs fans there...

While not pro, when I lived in Seattle, I went to a few Thunderbirds hockey games. I was rooting for the Winterhawks or the Americans. Other fans were annoyed but they refrained from throwing their lattes on me. When I go to the bars to watch the NHL playoffs, everyone gets annoyed with me since I am the only Canucks fan there.

I have this delimma coming on Thursday. The Americans are coming here to play the Winterhawks. I live in the Portland area and love to root for the home team but I grew up with the Americans. I don't know how many will be there since they are playing at the Rose Garden and not the Coliseum.

GO CANUCKS!!

It's quite common in Football over here and in mainland Europe too. My team has a big away following and it's normal to have 2 - 3000 fans traveling. We once took 10000 fans to the final game of the season. Admittedly it was only 70 miles away but a good turnout never the less. With that amount of fans you don't feel so isolated and the comerardery (sp?) is much higher. An away trip is usually a good day out Big grin

There were many fans at Detroit Tigers home games at Comic-Era Park this past summer who, admit it or not, were rooting for the visiting team. Why?? They wanted to see their pathetic home team set the record for most losses in a season. I was one of them, and I'll admit it. The Tigers, of course, just missed setting the record.

I've cheered for the Toronto Blue Jays at several Seattle Mariners games. One kid tried to outshout me, but there were 17 rows of Canadians at that game, so he couldn't outshout all of us! I got to go one time with some high-ups from my company, and cheered for Toronto then. Nobody seemed to care.

Oh yeah, anytime one of the Pittsburgh teams (Pirates, Steelers, Penguins) is in Atlanta, Charlotte, or Raleigh-Durham and I'm going to be around I try to go see them beat the Braves, Falcons, Thrashers, Panthers, or Hurricanes. Generally, unless it's the Steelers playing, people tend to pity me for my support of teams that aren't on anyone's radars. Then if we win, I tend to be rather despised, but wins are so rare from any of the teams this season that doesn't happen too often  Sad

God help you if you were in New York!

In 2000, I traveled to a Braves vs Mets game at Shea Stadium wearing a John Rocker jersey. I wore a bullet-proof vest under my jersey and had an NYPD officer shadowing me all night long, but I still got threatened and had a gun pulled on me when I rode the #7 Train.

Back in high school, my school had shared its' football stadium with our biggest rival for many years (they had not built their own stadium yet) and every other year our school was the away team. So that's the closest I've come to that.

Back in the days of the old Mile High in Denver, my brother and I went to the Phins-Broncos game in which Elway had his number retired. We were sitting in the south stands, and we were cheering for the phins, numerous dirty looks were given to us.

I make road trips to Atlanta and Houston at least once during every MLB season to see the Cubs play (and hopefully win). I figure I might as well put my Ryne Sandberg jersey that I bought at Wrigley in '97 to good use.

I used to hate the Saints when I was a kid, so when my dad brought me to a game in the Dome, I always cheered for the opposing team, much to the dismay of the local die hards. I have since learned my lesson.

I wore a Donovan McNabb jersey to the Steelers-Bucs MNF game at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa last year (yes I know McNabb isnt on the Steelers of course but the Bucs hate the Eagles and vice versa)...needless to say one of the people who got me the tickets gave me the silent treatment for the night, but I was never harassed by a Bucs fan which frankly shocked me...

Also when I was about 9 or 10 I brought a Braves foam tomahawk into the Vet for a Braves-Phillies game just to be rebellious...the ticket-taker cracked a line about it but I dont remember any other reaction...

Let me elaborate,

Tampa's stadium doesn't NEED a judge that sends people staight to jail.

All the time.

I would go see every inter-league Atlanta-Yankees game at Turner Field. Wear all my Yankees stuff. Its not like it mattered though, all the fans at Turner Field were Yankees fans anyway.

Islanders-Thrashers every time the Isles came to town. Didn't matter--its not like anyone gives a rats ass. A few isolated incidents, nothing serious at all. Like one redneck woman who told me to 'sit down and shut up' in a southern drawl. My response to her was: 'Check the scoreboard and go back to your trailer.' She was not amused.

I've only been to three out of nine Yankee-Ranger games since I've lived in Dallas. Again, a lot of Yankee fans.

Isles haven't come to Dallas yet, but I was rooting for the Ducks during their 5OT win in Dallas last season. Nothing happened.

Yes, and recently. Went to the Bowling Green at Ohio State football game in Columbus in September. Although I love the Buckeyes, I couldn't root against my alma mater, BG. They lost to the Bucks in a pretty good game.

I didn't do enough rooting for BG last night, however.  Sad

Went to Milwaukee to watch the Cubs play the Brewers last September. Miller Park rarely sells out, but it did for that series as half the stadium was Cub fans. I sat in the bleachers, which was a sea of blue. It was almost like being at Wrigley. The fan support must have helped some since the Cubbies swept that series. Next year I'm planning on following them to Milwaukee and St. Louis and maybe even Cincy or Pittsburgh.

I've seen my Los Angeles Kings play the Dallas Stars twice in Dallas, once at Reunion Arena, then last year at the American Airlines Center.

At Reunion, I wore my Gretzky-era jersey. Didn't really get jeered at, did get a few comments. Someone said that a guy was at the same game wearing an old forum blue and gold Jay Wells jersey. Of course, after the Kings lost 4-2, I got some crap.

At AAC, I wore normal street clothes. Kings still lost, I think it was 7-4. At the time, it was the most goals scored in a game at the AAC.

All the time. Last year, rooted for MSU at LSU, Alabama, and Ole Miss. This year we've been to Tulane and Auburn so far, and I'm going to Tennessee next week, and Arkansas the week after that.

There's no better way to tour SEC stadiums than to be in an SEC band.

And the judge in question just got elected to the Pennsylvania Superior Court.  Insane

Back when Cleveland Indians tickets were near impossible to get, my family bought tickets for a game versus the Detroit Tigers in Detroit. It was an interesting experience, there were just about as many Indians fans as Tigers fans in the stadium. The Tigers ended up winning though.
