Hamburgers and Frankfurters were named after those cities.... those types of sandwiches/sausages originated there.... just as "Wiener" is derived from the city of Wien.... Vienna in German. Thus, a slang term for penis in English also means a certain type of wurst (sausage in German) from Vienna (see any connection??), and is also the name of an inhabitant of Vienna.... whom I understand like to eat large wieners Big grin.

Right, and it won't come as a surprise, that guys from Berlin are called Berliners Big grin. There's also something to eat, everybody in Germany knows these pastries as Berliner, except the Berliners, they call it a Pfannkuchen, which is absolutely ridiculous, it is not made in a Pfanne (pan), but it indicates pretty clearly that Berliners like to make fun about others, but not about themselves...

VIENNA = WIEN = inhabidants are WIENER the sausage is a FRANKFURTER

Well they are long and thin....the sausages mostly as a pair of....but its a fact the (sausage) WIENER are WIENER outside of WIEN only. In WIEN (Vienna) we name them FRANKFURTER but in FRANKFURT the FRANKFURTER are WIENER as well. And then we have DEBREZINER wich are named after the CITY of DEBECEN in Hungary...but this is another story...

Sehr interessant!

So if I want to order what Americans call a "hot dog" in Frankfurt, I should ask for a wiener... and if I want to order a hot dog in Wien, I should ask for a frankfurter... and in America, if I order a frankfurter or wiener, I will get a hot dog. And if I want someone to eat my wiener, well that is another story... Big grin.

Vielen Dank.

ROTFL

Well the Wiener's or Frankfurter's (as sausages...) are usually only about 6" long and a half inch wide...Debreziner's are the same but very spicy. Hot Dogs can be filled here as you will...you may next time ask for a BURENWURST wich has appr. 7" or a KNACKWURST wich is the half in lengh but shorter and a sausage with the name POLNISCHE (polonian) about 10"x3"....but this is another other story...... he he
