### The Missing Dollar

After reading the thread "I dont get this", it reminded me of a good puzzle I read some time ago. See if you can explain where the missing dollar has gone.

3 MEN GO INTO A MOTEL. THE MAN BEHIND THE DESK SAID THE ROOM IS \$30, SO EACH MAN PAID \$10 AND WENT TO THE ROOM. A WHILE LATER THE MAN BEHIND THE DESK REALIZED THE ROOM WAS ONLY \$25, SO HE SENT THE BELLBOY TO THE 3 GUYS' ROOM WITH \$5. ON THE WAY THE BELLBOY COULDN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO SPLIT \$5 EVENLY BETWEEN 3 MEN, SO HE GAVE EACH MAN A \$1 AND KEPT THE OTHER \$2 FOR HIMSELF. THIS MEANT THAT THE 3 MEN EACH PAID \$9 FOR THE ROOM, WHICH IS A TOTAL OF \$27, ADD THE \$2 THAT THE BELLBOY KEPT = \$29. WHERE IS THE OTHER DOLLAR?

WHERE IS THE OTHER DOLLAR?

I'd say under your Caps Lock key...

No, more seriously.

The total is 27\$, but the 2\$ the bellboy kept for himself are not taken from the 30\$. They are a supplement from the 25\$ the 3 (unwise) men should have paid. 25+2 = 27.

To go from 27\$ to 30\$ you add 3\$. Thos were not kept by the bell boy, but just given back to the guests.

And please, just don't shout like that, you sound like my 7th grade math teacher...

But you know, Will, it does not take math skills that superior to add flights durations in one's log book

Anyway, vieille put, I'm sure you'll feel more at home in that thread : http://www.airliners.net/discussions/non_aviation/read.main/447331/

I was ready to paste the answer from the site that I copied this riddle from, cause I was sure people would have a hard time figuring it out. Yet 707 is too smart and quick for all of us.

BartiniMan

P.S. the reason for the caps lock is cause i copied and pasted, and thats the way it came out and i didnt want to rewrite it in lower case letters.

### RE: The Missing Dollar

707cmf is right. Here is the arithmetic proof.

RP = Room Price (original)
GS = Guy's Share (original)
E = Price of "error"

So first:
RP = 3 x GS

Then, clerk realizes error and fixes it:
RP - E = (3 x GS) - E

Bellboy gives each Guys a reimbursement (R) of 1\$ and keeps balance (B) of 2\$. Therefore:
RP - E = (3 x GS) - (3 x R) - 2

We simplify:
RP - E = 3(GS - R) - 2

We solve:
RP = 30
GS = 10
E = 5
R = 1
B = 2

30 - 5 = 3(10 - 1) - 2
25 = 25.
Never let the facts get in the way of a good theory.

Bartiniman, your math is brilliant, it's exactly as the minister of finances in my country.

Come up here, you will have a great career in the Ministry of Finances.

All you need to learn is to put about nine or ten zeroes behind your figures.
