Green Bay Packers History - Why Green Bay?

Tue Nov 11, 2003 6:39 am

Hello,

One thing I've often wondered is why the tiny city of Green Bay, Wisconsin, has a major pro sports franchise....Green Bay is far and away the smallest city in the US with a franchise in the 4 major sports leagues (NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA)...since the Packers have been around for a long time, does anyone know the roots of the Packers and can explain this?

The NFL started humbly; semi-pro teams played under the names of the companies that financed them. The Packers were bankrolled by a meatpacking plant at which many of the players worked. I think.

Why not Green Bay? There was obviously a demand for a football team. If there was no demand, the team would have moved. Also, probably because there is nothing else to do out there Big grin

Another example: The Chicago Bears began as the Decatur Staley's in Decatur Illinois, an industrial city 3 hours south of Chicago. For several reasons, the economics of the Green Bay franchise have allowed the team to stay in Green Bay since its inception, and thus they've become an anomaly in modern day sports franchises, but man, what an incredible history the franchise has had.

KYIPpiolt:

Don't forget that since 1923 the Packers have more or less been owned by the residents of Green Bay (assuming that most of them bought the stock).

So unless the residents want to get rid of the Packers, they will never leave.

I think the Packers remains the only publicly-owned professional sports team.

I think Green Bay is a great place for the team.
Its gotta be. Everyone knows that us Wisconsin fans are the best in the NFL.

Back in 97 they were selling stock. I don't know about now though.

Green Bay also played half their schedule in Milwaukee for many years.

Actually, as to my knowledge, the Green Bay Packers were originally owned under a CHEESE packing company...explaining the popular "Cheese Hats" worn during games...
Shut up and calculate.

Milwaukee is why Green Bay is still around. And only in the NFL. No way anything like that could survive the other major leagues.

Sorry, Iamcanadian. The Acme Packing Co. and the Indian Packing Co. that preceded it were both meat packing companies. The Cheese Head hats originate from Wisconsin's large cheese and dairy industry as well as from a derogatory term for Wisconsinites.

Speaking of Decatur Illinois, there's a little town right outside of Decatur on Route 48 called "Boody". (I swear. Look it up on a map).

I always thought it would be cool if the Green Bay Packers moved there....
