Let me ask you something: Do you think it is right for your country’s troops to be involved in and get killed while suppressing the freedom of a proud people, that too not for the benefit of Italy, but for the benefit of *another*country and its insane leadership? The 18 brave souls killed yesterday did not die for Italy but for George W Bush. Do you think it is right for Italian troops to be turned into kheema to satisfy the lust of one mad man in Washington? This war and the occupation happened because of GWB. Now will he look after the families left behind? No sir! People like GWB aren’t as good at creating and protecting as they are at destroying! Italy has already once in its history seen its young people being killed due to the madness of one man in the 1930’s. Do you really want to see Italian blood spilt for another mad man today?
If you really feel so strongly about this mad, unjustified war and the illegal occupation of Iraq and how it is affecting the rest of us in the democratic world, then you must do more than just speak out in forums like these, where your calls for sanity are sure to be drowned out by the calls to murder made by the loony right wing. You must get together like minded people, speak out and demand an immediate withdrawal of Italian troops from Iraq.
Here’s what you should do: Write to your MP’s of BOTH houses calling for the immediate withdrawal of Italian troops. Get together a group of like minded individuals and MEET your local MP and make the same demand. Send out letters to your local newspapers. You will be surprised at the response! I certainly was! The internet makes these activities inexpensive and relatively easy. And the response? Well, we had college kids in Pune writing impassioned responses to our letters/articles urging India to say no to sending troops. Last but not the least, seriously consider filing a Public Interest Litigation demanding, well if not a withdrawal, atleast reasons for KEEPING Italian troops in Iraq. If not anything else, it creates an enormous amount of pressure on the Govt. A PIL is one of the most powerful weapons given by Democracy to the common man to make himself heard. So learn to use it.
In India there is a “Right To Information” Act under which we can do that, and I am sure that if India has it, then Italy would also have something like that. And no it isn’t expensive. The last time we spent a total of Rs.1000 ($20) split among 10 people! We managed to find a lawyer in our NGO network who fought the case for free. These things happen; you only have to take the initiative and people come together.
When our own Govt was toying with the idea of sending Indian troops to Iraq, we in Pune did all of the above, and we also kept in touch with people in other cities who shared our views. Did it help? I certainly think so!
If members like Alpha1 really believed in all that he normally preaches during one of his Holier-than-thou moods, then HE would be doing these things in his own country and calling for an immediate withdrawal from Iraq. Either Alpha1 is a hypocrite or he is too blinded by his misplaced patriotism to see the truth. And the plain truth is that America itself has the most to loose from the actions of its insane leader.
