Hypothetical: wino or your dog?

Thu Nov 20, 2003 12:41 pm

Heard an interesting hypothetical recently. You're driving along at a nice rate of speed when suddenly appearing in the roadway are: (1) a homeless wino, and (2) your all-time favorite, loyal companion - your dog. You have a split-second to react, but you are going to hit one or the other.

Would you value the dregs of humanity over the greatest pet of all time simply because it is humanity?

Or would you stay as loyal to your dog as he/she has been to you and blast the wino into eternity?

Wow, thats tough. One part of me wants to save the dog, because you love it, and hit the wino to put him out of his misery, and the other would hit the dog, because human life is more important.

I would have to go with hitting the dog, as it can be replaced physically fairly easily, although the emotional part would take a while. Human life is more valuable to me.

I'd hit the homeless guy. Naturally, people should want to do what benefits themselves the most. In this case, it's your own pet. And maybe they're both the same age in dog years. I value the pet's life just as much as the human's life.

I'd run over the homeless man.

We don't want animal cruelty do we? Plus, a dog doesn't know better, the guy does.

Goodbye wino. I'd do everything I could to avoid both but if it were my dog, no adult human would override her. None. Though if it were a child crossing the road escorted by the Rottweiller it would be a moot point. I'd do everthing in my power to roll the truck and cause my own death. If either died, I'd be close behind.

If you could hit one or the other, then obviously you could hit both. Why isn't that one of the options?

If you've ever seen a dead dog...then seen a dead human...I'd pick the dog.

I'd jump out of the car and not have it on my conscience, I figure momentum killed one of them and I was not in control of the vehicle after I bailed. Chances are if I were going that fast, it's not in my car.  Big thumbs up

Seriously though, I hate dogs but I wouldn't swerve into it. I'd report it, kick most of it off the road so others don't make a mess, wait for the road kill cleanup crew holding my nose and be on my way. I've been through this before but it was a cat and a city bus, I was walking on the side.

no question I would hit the wino. He is the one standing in the road so being sued is not really a factor since its without a doubt he is being stupid, his family could sue but I doubt they would win. Maybe if hes still alive after the running over I would tell him where he could go get a job and cease being a leech on the butt of society. The dog does not know any better than to stand in traffic and besides, I like dogs more than people anyway.

Yeah, someone that hates dogs, or cats, or rattlesnakes, or gophers, etc. says a bit about themselves.

I have enough driving skill to avoid all, though I would hit the bum if I had no choice.

I'd probably end up killing myself trying to stop and swerve, but I'd swerve towards the dog. Sorry buddy, you're not human.

The hobo gets mowed down. It's allot easier for a human to know that he should keep his ass out of the road, than a dog.

Although, if the hobo got stuck in my windshield, I would not continue home, park my rig in the garage, go have sex, then a week later when the hobo has died, stash the boddy in a park somwhere.

GOODNIGHT NOW!
