100% CPU Usage?

Sat Nov 22, 2003 8:33 am

Hi guys. I have this wierd computer problem. Whenever I start my computer, i always get my CPU usage at 100% and the computer is VERY slow. A simple restart usually fixes the problem, but I'd like to get rid of it for good. I run a 2.53GHz Sony Vaio with 512 MB of memory, Windows XP Service Pack 1, and Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 2. Anyone know how to fix it and/or what it is?

I don't think you have enough RAM. I have a similar problem but it happens all the time, and I got a 2.0 Ghz Celeron chip w/256MB RAM in a laptop and I need to upgrade.

It's not the RAM, I ran Win2k Pro with a single stick of 128 MB DDR RAM, since the other RAM slots apparently had been toasted (ie. I got error beeps when I inserted RAM blocks into the slots).

Which is why I've just shelled out 800$ for a new motherboard & a new (and faster) CPU.

Guys I have 512 MB of RAM. It just started doing this a couple of weeks ago, so I don't have to reformat.

Press ctrl+alt+delete. The windows task manager should open. Go to processes and look at the CPU part. Then let me know what files OTHER THAN SYSTEM IDLE PROCESS using more than 00% of your CPU.

Let me know if you find it.

taskmgr.exe (not all the time and obviously the Manager itself)
pow.exe (not all the time, my popup blocker)
aim.exe (not all the time, my instant messanger)
System (al the time)
civc.exe (all the time, a SYSTEM function)
services.exe (all the time, SYSTEM)
svchost.exe (all the time, SYSTEM)
FreeRAM XP Pro Version 1.40 (not all the time, my RAM freer)

With XP & Win2k you don't need a RAM freer, since Windows has learned to do it on its own.

Well it seems it hasn't in the US. When playing a game I can be down to 38 MB of RAM.

Can you really ever have too much RAM?

"Can you really ever have too much RAM?"

"Nope."

Actually, I heard yes... But, I don't recall the reasons.

I've been enduring computer woes, as well. Mine will become "stuck" every so often. Seems to follow a regular cycle. I've reformatted HD (3x); Changed modems and cables; Checked all wiring and connections... It's not my ISP. I don't think it even has anythig to do with the internet because I've now noticed this problem even when I'm not online. I'm wondering if it's the motherboard and/or proccessor; Video card(?) or even the power supply. Someone told me irregular power flow can disrupt the computer's ability to process info. Everything is plugged into surge protectors and UPS, though.
I don't want to spend money on this thing cuz I already spent large to purchase it just two years ago..... But... Sometimes, I just wanna put my foot through the damn thing.

Some memory manager programs and cpu coolers can create the illusion that they are hogging up space, unless you realy notice your system bogging down, you don't have to worry about the numbers.
