'The Office' On DVD

Tue Nov 25, 2003 2:32 am

I just picked up the DVD of the first season. This is one of the best shows I've seen in years! We get it on BBC America Sunday nights at 9. I highly reccommend it.

Apparently it is being remade for US television as well. Stand by for a disaster, British comedies rarely transfer well, viz. "Cosby", "Coupling", "Stanford & Son" etc.

Don't forget "Dear John." Great on the BBC, terrible on NBC.

A great show, one that was a slow burner when first shown on BBC2 in 2001.
Many don't take to humour being based on pure embarrassment and cringing, but it's certainly a one off, full of characters that are recognizable.
A producer for a US Network thought he could rework it as a romantic comedy based of two of the cast, Tim and Dawn, which totally misses the point of them in the story, anyway if you want that just continue to re-make existing shows.

Producers always try to 'Americanize' British sitcoms. They shouldn't bother. British humor plays just fine over here, as demonstrated by Benny Hill, Monty Python, The Full Monty and tv broadcasts of Parliament.
