Roadkill---ever Cause It?

Tue Dec 09, 2003 3:44 am

I have run over:

1 cat
1 dog (survived)
1 squirrel
1 possum (I think)

All accidents, of course!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

1. one dog - on a mountain road - there was no way to avoid it
2. several birds - they all seemed attracted to my T-bird on the freeway
3. one deer - another mountain road -

So far I've got about 5-7 rabbits and 3 cats under my belt during my 10-year driving career.

Never, I almost run over a cat but I could avoid it by doing a full brake application.

Well, you don't exactly run OVER a deer! How much damage to your car?  Confused

1 squirrel, though I think it lived cause I just got its tail and it sort of limped off the road...a weird site...and also a bird...ironically heading to the airport to go fly, just as I crested a hill at 35 a bird smashed into my windshield, died instantly and landed behind my car...wasn't a good omen lol...

I hit a cat that was already hit (but alive) and a rabbit. The strange thing is, those are only two things I've hit while driving and they were both on the same day & same trip but different counties. Now I don't know if this counts, but I also know I hit a mouse one night. I thought I saw something small dart in front of me. Curious what it was and if I ran over it, I went back and sure enough, there was a little flat mouse in the road.

The scariest incident was being a passenger in a car driven by my dad. We were returning from a fishing trip and had the boat tied to the top of the car. Coming over the hill on the highway, there was a freshly hit german-shepard lying perpendicular in the center of our lane. It was HUGE! My dad could only try to strattle it which he did, but the car was too low and the dog too big so the frame slammed into the dog. The jolt knocked the boat loose which fell down the side of the car.

Was a passanger in a car that hit a dog on Route 301 between Jacksonville and Gainesville, FL one night after a FL-GA game.

The sad thing was that the dog jumped out of a minivan on the northbound side of the road while the family was at a gas station. The dog got spooked and torn off into traffic. I hardly had time to say watch out before we hit it.

We were doing about 70 mph so we figured that nothing was going to be left. We kept going. I feel horrible for the family that had to watch their dog get hit in front of their eyes.

Almost hit a hedgehog once, and subsequently almost crashed my car while avoiding it.

No damage to the van actually - I hit the brakes hard, but the deer did a little "where am I gonna go" dance before opting to head off the road. Had he decided just a second or two sooner, he would have made it. I clipped it's hindquarters at about 20 mph. Technically I didn't kill the deer, but I broke it's leg and a trucker behind me put it out of it's misery with a gun.

Murder! Big grin

Anyway, I've only hit a couple of birds, no animals yet. But the drive home is usually late down country roads so my time will come!!!

One bird for me. He flew right into the grill of my truck, and I found it stuck to the radiator. Almost have hit a few squirrels, but never actually hit one.

I once went over a seagull with my bicycle! Like George Costanza says, we have a deal (with pigeons, and I think the same with seagulls). The Seagull didn't move, and I ran over its wing, and got some feathers in my chain. Not a pretty sight. I actually stopped and got the seagull out of harm's way, but not much else I could to to it. I think it had a broken wing, and that's all. I guess it's the same as a pilot losing their medical?  Big grin

I also ran over a squirrel once, and a rabbit another time.

The same place I ran over the rabbit, at about 90 km/h, I almost hit a bear!!! In the bear incident, I was driving my friend's Suburban at night, when out of the woods I see this black shaddow in an instance, I touched the brakes and swerved a bit. My friend said the bear tucked down, and if we had hit it, it would serve as somewhat of a ramp. I wouldn't want to see what damage that would do at 90 km/h!

I was in a car that squashed a squirrel. Stupid thing ran out and got hit by the rear tire on the far side of the car from where it started.

I personally hit a bat. It was plastered on my grille like a batman symbol, only upside down.

That's it so far thank goodness.

Hi all,

Not me myself, but I was in the car and the time.... On the same night me and a friend were out in 'The New Forest' plodding along a country lane.. All of a sudden.. 'BOOMF' car bounces  Wow!

Got out and there's a poor hedgehog with its insides splattered on the road the poor begger!  Sad

Then about an hour later a group of Deer decide to run out in front of the car skidded to a halt.. Moved over to the right then they decide to walk in front of the car whilst we are pulling away.. Silly animals!  Smile

Regards,

Justin  Big thumbs up

Both of my roadkills have sad stories attached... no kidding:

1 bird of unknown species, in Canada... on the way back to the U.S. And it flipped up and got stuck under the windshield wiper, so not only was I upset that I hit it, but I had to see it for almost an hour (my parents wouldn't let me stop because we were in a six car caravan with our relatives)... We had to stop and remove it from the car before we went through customs.

1 sparrow, here in my city. I stopped and picked it up to take it to the animal hospital to be euthanized but when I got out of my car, I locked my keys in the car. And it started to rain. So there I was sitting on the side of the road next to my car, soaking wet, cradling this dying sparrow, crying, and the little thing died in my hands. So sad. The AAA guy got there almost an hour later.

I don't know about other states, but Colorado is full of suicidal squirrels. One jumped under my left back wheel, and I almost hit another one today, since it decided to run out in front of my car.

A bird cut across the road in front of me once and it smacked the front bumper of my truck... ended up flapping around in the turn lane for a while.

I felt so bad.

I kill thousands of animals per year while driving, not counting insects. In the spring where I live, toads try to cross the road and there is no way to avoid them and one would be stupid to try.

For the larger animals though I've hit 2 dogs, one died and the other limped away, one bird who died instantly instead od the hawks claws and 1 cat.

It's been over 30 years since I hit the dog that died and I still remeber his facein the split second before I hit him. I hope no child spent the next days looking for his/her best friend.

I hit a Pheasant that had flown out of a corn field and into my the path of my pick-up truck.
As it was a fresh kill, I took it home and ate it.

Once, we had a Goose fly into the side of the building where I worked. Damn thing went straight into a plate glass window and broke it's neck. One of the guys in the office took it home and had it for dinner.

Roadkill .. not exactly, we caused airkill:
In early 2002 a friend of mine and I drove back from an airline memorabilia convention in the south of germany. It was one of the first great days of summer where the sun ist sill low but the thermometer reaches t-shirt temperatures.
We were driving at around 140 km/h when suddenly I saw a black something incoming from 1 o'clock high. I just could say the words "there is some bird co........" when, with a dump, loud *fump* damn thing raven said goodbye to his life when he smashed right between the frontdoor and the windshield. We were scared as hell and only saw the cadaver tumbling through the air onto another car. There was plenty of blood splatter on the windshield and we soon headed for the nearest parking spot exit to asses the damage and calm down our heartbeat. It was one huuuge raven and the impact sound was purely frightening.

A bird, once.

A car I was in (but not at the wheel) hit a bunny.

And on my bike, I rolled over a Hedgehog ('twas night) - no damage neither for the bike nor for the hedgehog...

Once while heading back home I ran over a cat one block away from my house, it looked exactly like my GF's annoying cat......so I was wondering how would I tell her the news......the only time I have been glad to see the dam cat was when I pulled in to the driveway and saw it there sleeping.
