Bali Bombing - The Movie

Fri Dec 12, 2003 8:52 am

I'm quite appauled at this. Channel 9 in Australia is planning to make a "made-for-tv-movie" (groan) about the Bali Bombings which killed over 200 people in 2002.

I am completely and utterly disgusted that Jason McCartney - a football player injured in the attack (who has cashed in on his experience before by writing a best selling book about his experiences) supports this. I feel so damn sorry for all those people who were more injured than this man and didnt have the benefit of football or literary stardom to highlight their plight.

For a commercial tv network to profit from this tragedy - I believe, is a new low.

I had a cocktail in a bar in London called a 'Bali Bomber'. I hope it was an idiotic oversight on their part because they no longer serve it.
I used to think the brain is the most fascinating part of my body. But, hey, who is telling me that?

Seriously though - what can we do about this? The more people that jump up and down and rant and rave about this - the more likely the bastards are going to put it on the air.

I'd say there is a consistent feeling of disgust toward this project - perhaps the tide of public opinion may sway channel 9? Because no amount of sunset shots of kuta beach, piano music in the background and weepy soap actors can hide the fact that this is all intended to be a ratings (i.e money) draw. I completely reject the argument that this is somehow a point of national interest that must be explored on film - the wounds are still yet to heal.

This is wrong - and we need to let channel 9 know it. I plead with members on this board in Australia and internationally to take it upon themselves to discourage channel 9 from pursuing this film into production. Email them at todayshow@nine.com.au or aca@nine.com.au . Call radio - the number for 2ue talkback is 13 13 32 in Sydney - Write to your MP! Even better - write to the Prime Minister at this link: http://www.pm.gov.au/email.cfm. Please help to stop the commercial media profiting from terrorism.

Why does this idea sound completely tasteless.

At least now I know that tasteless programming isn't just an American television trait.
