Republic Technicalities

Sat Dec 13, 2003 9:17 am

In countries that retain the use of a Prime Minister as Head of Government and a President as Head of State - how is this President chosen?

Is it a direct election? I'd be interested to see how this is done especially in Germany and Italy. Is the President supposed to be a-political? If so, this really does complicate the process.

Thank you in advance for any information you may have,
