MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD
I to went to a midnight screening, and I have to say that this movie had it all (except sad moments, which I'm really upset about, but more on that later). Especially the entire battle at Minas Tirith was just over the hill - I actually started laughing hysterically when the ghost army swept ashore. And the entire theatre was |--| this close to doing a standing ovation when Legolas took down the oliphant
However, WTF did Andrew Jackson do to the end? I mean, when I read the book, I was close to crying when I read how each of the members of the fellowship ended their lives (with Sam becoming mayor of Hobbiton and dying as an old old man, and with Merry & Pippin going on with their daily lives, before moving to Minas Tirith and ending their days with a burial in the tomb there alongside the great warriors of Gondor etc.). In the movie, it just ends too fast. I mean, what happened to Gimli & Legolas? Did they continue together or did they split up? What happened to Saruman? What happened to... etc etc? If you haven't read the book, it has a bit of a confusing end.
I seem to remember reading the Christopher Lee (Saruman) was upset that he had pretty much been removed from the movie that was going to the theatres, and that Andrew Jackson promised to take some of the material that was going to the DVD and put it in the "normal" movie.
