Pet Peeve Of The Week

Thu Dec 18, 2003 6:41 am

Hey all

Just a random observation I thought I'd share with you, something that has become my pet peeve of the week- why is it that even though EVERYBODY around me knows that I am Jewish, still manages to wish me a Merry Christmas?

Its not that it offends me, it doesnt, its just that I dont fully understand why the natural presumption is that I am going to be catholic... I mean, sure, we (as in Jews) are outnumbered greatly, but still, is it so hard for people to say Happy Holidays over Merry Christmas (unless of course your in their house standing next to a gigantic tree with lights)...

I know this is mostly me just venting a little, but Im curious to know your take on this issue...

Im ready to be flamed, but hopefully, y'all will look at this without accusing me of being a racist or whatever else may conjure up inside your heads...

Happy Holidays

I think its because "Merry Christmas" doesn't really have anything to do with Christmas anymore it seems. Its used in the same way as "Happy Holidays."

I think most people are just trying to be polite, no harm intended. By just saying "thank-you" mention that you are Jewish, all should be well.

I do agree that "Happy Holidays" is more of a generic greeting and can be used.

See......one reply down and no flaming! However, I will not hold my breath!

Without a doubt I understand the politeness factor, and I take no offense when people say it, infact, i appreciate when something is said at all, shows compassion- an object that seems to be fleeting from society... its just kind of annoying overall

Most people assume that when I attend mass with my wife that I am Catholic, but I am not. Bugs me also!!!!!

My pet peeve of the week: people that drive for 100 miles with their turn signal on!!!!!  Big thumbs up

My pet peeve ....

Walking down a sidewalk towards 3 or 4 people who are walking towards you shoulder to shoulder, covering the whole sidewalk, and they expect YOU to get out of their way!

NOT!

I just barge right through them. Big grin

I hate the walking thing. Another pet peeve is people that don't know what to do at a 4way stop or a yield sign.. but my biggest pet peeve is fingerprints on a monitor... DON'T TOUCH THE MONITOR DAMNIT

Does that mean I shouldn't say Happy New Year to my Chinese neighbours?
Personally I'm happy people say Merry Christmas. Some are so damned scared of offending someone, that saying the "C" word is taboo! BTW, what does catholicism have to do with it? Surely all Christians celebrate Christmas?

I think a lot of times how there is so much Christmas stuff what about Hanakah? I bought some Happy Hanakah stamps the other day just because I feel like there is too much Xmas everywhere and it's sickening. I used to go to a Jewish school and it was always 50/50 with both all season so it's weird to me not to even have anyone around that I know who is jewish. and actually the jewish friends I have celebrate Christmas!

My pet peeve is having to be PC all the time! If I know somebody is Jewish, I will definitely wish them happy holidays. But I hate not being able to just say Merry Christmas to somebody if I believe they are Catholics. When I wish Merry Christmas to somebody, I don't do it for the religious significance, but rather the holiday season which I see as a means to get family together.

Anyways, Merry ..., oh, Happy holidays to everyone!  Smile

When I am at work, I don't know if a customer is Jewish, so I just avoid the whole thing and only say 'Thank you, come again.'

In relation to another thread: My pet peeve is if a cell phone conversation is so dang important then finish it before ordering. It is not my fault when I read it back and all I hear about is who is going with whom to the dance or who is sleeping with whom or how important this contract is blahblahblah then I get someone screaming in my face five minutes later because 'I am alergic to all dairy products/tomatos/lettuce/onions/beans/meat.' Some people....

Cell phones are another pet peeve. What is so damned important you can't focus on driving, walking, whatever task you are doing. There are 6 simple words people need to learn, they are: CAN I CALL YOU BACK LATER. Personally I do have a cell phone, I use it almost like a pager, I see who is calling when I am doing something, I call them back when I have a free moment and typically keep the conversation under a minute. I see people every day that have their cell phone glued to their ear all the time and I just have to wonder what is so damned important.

The cellphone thing... It's like Startvalve read my mind! I hate them! Being from Sweden, the country of cellphones (Ericsson ya know...) I'd love to see our government legislate against using them while driving! Some countries have already done that.

Yeah, I'd also refer my cell as a pager...  Big grin

My cell phone pet peeve is people who use them at a dinner table, be they at home or at a restaurant. If the call is really that important that you must take it, excuse yourself from the table. Now how many calls are really that urgent that they can't wait.

Ditto for cell phone use in a theater.

The best ever is a cell phone that went off during church. The person had the audacity to answer it. The priest stopped the mass and said, that's ok. Let's put God on hold so that you can answer you phone.

Funniest thing I ever saw at mass.

Happy holidays, Merry Christmas and a blessed Kwanza (sp?) to you all.

What is with everyone and their political correctness? Why can't we all just accept that some people believe in different things, celebrate different holidays, or just do things differently in general? Christmas is an internationally recognized holiday, but sometimes for different reasons. For example, many people just see christmas for it's commercial side (ie. shopping, food, and christmas specials on tv), while others (such as myself) see it as a time to remember that Jesus Christ was sent to earth as a baby born in a manger. So unless you want to wear a sign around your neck that states "I'm Jewish!", or anybody else for any other religion, for that matter. So let's all gather around the CHRISTMAS tree (not the holiday tree) and sing CHRISTMAS carols and accept that this holiday is not a time for political correctness, but a time for acceptance!

Merry Christmas!
Mike

No offense, but there are only about 6M Jews in North America...out of over 300M people. That makes you about 2% of the population. Translation: you live in an overwhelmingly Christian society....so get used to hearing Merry Christmas. Sorry....just a fact of North American life.

btw....most Christians in North America are NOT Roman Catholic....they're Protestant.

-People, usually Europeans, referring to text messages on cell phones as 'SMS.'

-That it took me 1 hour and 20 minutes to get home from work today (Luna and 635 to Northwest Hwy and the D.N. Tollway), when my average drive is 25 minutes.

My Pet Peeve of the week has gotta be that people actually LIKE "That Milkshake Song"... Yeah, there was a thread about that song not too long ago. Man, it drives me crazy, it actually made it to the top 5 at 8 or whatever on the radio... I know I can turn off the radio, and I do whenever I hear that song, but it never fails to get stuck in my head. Damn I think it's coming back now. Absolutely one of the most pathetic attempts at music I've ever heard, and the sad thing is, it was a succesfull attempt. What the hell people like it! What is the world coming too? That song is corrupting us all...  Insane

For those of you who don't have a clue what I'm talking about, consider yourself lucky. For those who do, I hope you agree with me.
