Calling All PC Techies: Print Servers

Mon Dec 22, 2003 8:20 am

Hi all,

I've successfully set up a print server on my home network for my multifunction printer. Problem is, while I can print as usual, I can't scan or use other features of my printer from the PC.

How can I let my PC and printer talk to each other as if they were connected directly together?

I'm running XP with an HP 5500 series printer hooked up to a DLink print server via USB.

Thanks in advance...

As far as I know you can't do it, printers are easily shared over any network - but the problem is that windows only sees it as a printer, and won't treat it as special, regardless of whether it has scanner/fax capabilities.

There are ways of sharing dedicated scanners over networks, but as far as I know there is no driver available to allow the HP 5500 to be shared across a network in it's scanning capacity.

Why did you bother with a dedicated print server anyway? You could simply have plugged it into one of the machines on the network and shared it that way and retained full functionality on at least one machine, for a home network a print server is a bit of overkill - unless there is some specific reason you need it of course.

Gordon.
