Beagle2 About To Land On The Mars

Thu Dec 25, 2003 7:57 am

The Beagle2 and the Mars Express will hopefully reach the Mars in a few hours.

You can follow the events live at:

http://esa.capcave.com/esa/marsexpress/

Could be interesting for the people in North/South America to watch it, for me it's too late :/. The broadcasts will start at 2:25 CET.

By the way, Merry Christmas everybody and don't eat too much!  Smile

Don't expect them to find Aliens 3/Predator-style creatures roaming around, most likely if they find anything, it will be either living bacteria or microbes. Sounds quite un-exciting but would still be a major discovery, we might have to travel billions or trillions of miles further into other galaxies and dimensions to find intelligent beings.

The nearest known star is 25 billion miles away, so you'd have to travel a bit further than a few trillion miles to get to another galaxy  Smile

Edit:

Don't expect them to find Aliens 3/Predator-style creatures roaming around,

Speak for yourself.

IF all went well, Beagle 2 is now on the Martian surface and Mars Express is about half-way through its orbit insertion burn. But, AS EXPECTED, there is no contact with either spacecraft at the moment. Should know more in a couple of hours.

There will be NO contact anyway until 22pm UTC since Beagle's antennas are pointing into open space until that time. I'll sure be watching when a signal is supposed to be picked up ... 5 hrs 52 mins to go

No contact with Odyssey as seen by the data stream with Jodrel Bank tonight. Hmmm. Not looking good.

However, given the way that Beagle 2 landed, I wouldn't give up on it until NASA has a go at trying to contact it using the Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Odyssey 2001 orbiters over the next few weeks.

I think NASA will have better luck with their new landers in 2004 since they are designed with better landing systems and are designed to have better contact with the NASA orbiters now orbiting Mars.

It should be noted that Beagle 2's lander technology isn't much improved over the Mars M-71 landers the Soviets tried to use in the early 1970's. It was designed extremely cheaply, and if it actually starts to work it'll be a miracle of sorts. Besides, the primary mission of Mars Express--namely orbiting the planet with advanced sensing systems to look at geological features of the planet and to carefully look for water underneath the surface--has been achieved with the orbiter now in Mars orbit, which will be adjusted to a near-polar orbit over the next few months.

the way it was originally planned was that mars express does start looking for beagle signals around jan4-5th when it has established its own final orbit.
this was the only thing really tested on earth, the odyssey and telescope ways were just things that esa guessed that could work, but never part of the original plan to set up contact with it, nor have those means of communication been tested before.
considering that the whole thing looks totally different, however i have to admit that esa was a bit premature at officially shooting for dates before jan. 4th. they should have put that out for official contact date and taken any earlier contact as icing on the cake.

Here's an Aviation Week update on the search for Beagle2.

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for it.
