"The Shepherd" On CBC

Thu Dec 25, 2003 4:24 pm

Did anyone here listen to Alan Maitland reading Frederick Forsyth's story "The Shepherd" on CBC Radio One tonight? It always makes me tear up, partly because of the story itself, and partly because it'll always remind me of Christmas Eve in Thunder Bay with my mom and dad, listening to CBC. We always made a point of listening on Christmas Eve just to hear "The Shepherd".

Here is a link to a clip on the CBC's website.

It's a beautiful story about an RAF pilot in the late 1950s, on his way home on Christmas Eve, when everything goes wrong.
But that was when I ruled the world

I've never heard the story read, but I've read it myself several times. I can even remember the name of *the shepherd* offhand, Johnny Kavanagh. A truly touching story from a time long since past, when the cost of training pilots was low enough to enable national service men to enter the training programmes.
