What Do You Fish With?

Thu Jan 01, 2004 3:38 pm

My ultimate fishing unit that i made last season and plan to use about the same rig this year....

Start with a stick thats about 2-4 metres long that is decently strong but not too heavy, tie a metre or 2 of fishing line onto the end of that, for a hook you could get a good one but for that i use a bent round and sharpened paper clip (go with the strong ones not the cheep ones on that), and for bait i ussually just throw a few breakfast scraps in my pocket (bacon, sausage, toast, doesnt really matter as long as it has you can rig it on to the hook setup). With this in one hand and steering my bike with the other i head off down to my fav fishing hole out in the bush there and enjoy a few hours of the layed back easy life. I cant remember the last time ive had success but still its the thrill of the hunt that counts...

A real rod, with a rattle trap lure. Don't fish much though.

Oh yes the beer, hard to resist sitting in the sun with a beer and a cheeze sandwhich while waiting for the fish to come to you...

I find with the Beer the outing can be a success even if the fish don't come to you.

For Carp fishing in these UK waters I will use a simple hair rig, with either a chunk of luncheon meat, boilie, 2 or 3 niblets of sweetcorn or a bunch of maggots  Laugh out loud

A standardized hair rig with boilie courtesy of Anglersnet.

Please note that I do not use barbed hooks.  Smile

Maybe I should explain the Hairing Teaser. It is a plastic thing that you stick the head in, then you attach the hook to its belly. The hook is attached to fishing line which is already attached to the teaser. You can buy them pretty much anywhere I imagine.

You actually fish for carp? I caught one carp in my life and that was on a Rat-L-Trap while trolling. I accidently snagged it. I prefer largemouth bass. I know those aren't real popular in Europe and in fact if memory serves, only two countries have them; Italy is one, but I can't recall the other. I have 5 rods. My main rig is a medium/light 5.5' pole with a spinning reel. I use that for hard jerk-baits, but my main preference is soft-plastics like the Zoom Flukes, Banjo Minnows and Yamamoto Senkos. I occassionally use tube baits, grubs like the Yamamoto Chomper and have a variety of other creature baits. I like to Texas-rig them weightless, but next want to try dropshotting. My second reel is for long casting. It's a 6.5' heavy action pole with a baitcasting reel. I use that for crank-baits, buzz-baits and spinner baits. My third rig is a medium action 6.5' with a spinning reel. I use that mostly for pitching plastics and spinnerbaits. My other two are just spares with spinnng reels. Here's my last big hawg of 2003... I think she was pregnent.  Big thumbs up

Hell yeah I fish for carp Big grin It's great fun. I haven't been for a while, but I will when i get a moment in the summer I think. Hehe, nothing beats catching a 27 lb Mirror carp at 4:30 am during a night fishing session  Smile

Nice pic  Big grin

Amazingly enough, hot dogs work as good bait. We used to live in a boat house condo and every morning I would fish before it was time for the long drive to school. I caught tons of fish using hot dogs as bait, and almost nagged a small gator on more than one occassion....not intentionally of course.

Carp are one of my favorite fish to catch. Too bad most anglers here in the U.S. disregard carp as a true gamefish. They put up one hell of a fight. A good size carp will provide plenty of a good action on a rod and reel.

Largemouth are by far the most popular species caught here in throughout the southern U.S. In the winter I typically stick with spinner baits are crankbaits. In the summer majority of my fish are caught on soft plastics or live bait. I honestly beleive the best fishing can be had with live bait. So in the summer I almost always have minnows with me wherever I go fish.

Depends on what I am fishing for.

Ice Fishing requires totally different gear then off the beach, then trolling, then salmon fishing.

But for salmon I stick mainly with spin-n-glo's and Pixie lures.

Usually only when going for king salmon do I run bait...salmon eggs.

Unless I am Ice fishing, then just a snelled hook with bait usually works. If it is a lure then a smalle one for jiggin.

OBAMA-WORST PRESIDENT EVER....Even SKOORB would be better.

I was just busting your chops about the carp. I know they're real popular in Europe and Asia. But Dodgecharger is right; they just aren't real big here in the US. They are largely considered an invasive garbage fish with no real value as food or sport. Largemouth fillets are really not the best to eat either, but I can't stand eating any kind of fish except tuna and shellfish anyway. I do know a few people that fish for carp and I hear they do fight well (but so do gar  Big grin) I prefer bass as a sport fish because they are so damn clever making it a challenge to hook them and even moreso to boat them once hooked. They're good at 'unhooking' themselves are getting you hung up on cover like weeds or docks. Smallmouth are great too, but we don't have a lot around here and you fish for those differently than largemouth.

One time I was up north. I felt like going out at 12 am on the dock just to try to catch something. About 5 minutes later, this huge fish caught on. I was getting ready to pick up the big Northern, or even better, Muskie or Walleye, but it was a friggen' carp! This thing was HUGE! It looked like a giant goldfish, though it was tannish. I let the sucka go, but man, it was huge! Now I fish for mainly bass in the lake in my backyard.

I love fishing and have spent many many hours flying in Northern Ontario with my Uncles who own several float planes! The type of rod/reel or bait I use depends on where I'm fishing or what I'm fishing for...

My favorite is early early morning bass fishing! Nothing finer than waking up early in the morning before the crack of dawn and getting to your favorite spot. For bass fishing I use a "Hula-Popper" (spelling?) it is a surface lure that floats - great for casting along shorelines or into lily pads.

Gigneil has been watching too much "King of the Hill."

Standard pole, Large hook, Bobber (neon orange and red) tied four feet from the hook, which is baited with frier liver. 8 6lb+ catfish in one hour.
