WiFi Rules

Sat Jan 03, 2004 3:04 pm

Here I am, in my bed, with my laptop on my lap, browsing through a.net forums instead of trying to sleep.

my DSL connection is located at the other end of the appartment, yet, no cable or wires whatsoever. My home network now consist in a desktop computer a laptop, a WiFi Router and a DSL modem, directly plugged on the router (for an easy internet sharing)

Anybody else here built themselves a WLAN ?

707, quite enthousiastic with that whole thing

My house is wired...and wireless....during the summer I sit outside on the deck and surf the net....I love WiFi, and would not live without it again!

Yes, we mac-heads are totally wireless with our airports (name of macs wireless router).

Sit outside in the sunshine, surfing, working...

As you know, I have both a LAN and WLAN at home.
But when my fiancée is in bed, I have better things to do than surf a.net  Big thumbs up (except if I'm well placed in the queue that is)

I use WiFi using my Netgear wireless router. I have a desktop and also a laptop which I use to surf the internet anywhere around my house. I love it! I've heard a lot about some security concerns but haven't had any problems so far!

I also use the WiFi connections at Starbucks which is the best!

I have a wired LAN at home for the 2 desktops and a laptop , I had tried a wireless LAN, but just not what I needed, because I dont have DSL, its really quite useless.

And now, at the end of the day, I have finished the WLAN installation. DSL modem and WiFi router are now out of my room, the desktop has received a WiFi PCI card, and there are no more Network cable in my appartment (except for the small one between the DSL modem and the WiFi router. )

Next step, understand how to configure this firewall!!!

Make sure you have WEP enabled ... otherwise, passersby and neighbors can get into your wireless network and access the intenet, and conduct all sorts of illegal activity for which you will be responsible.

Good point, thanks for that.

WEP is now enabled (ey 128 bits)

Not that the passerbys could be a problem (I live in the middle of nowhere), but the neighbout right on the floor under mine also has a WLAN, and it's better for us not to interfere  Wink/being sarcastic

We got DSL not too long ago and will be going the wireless route shortly as the modem and laptop on the couch config aint the best way to go.

Have had WiFi for about 7 months now and absolutly love it. Surfing the net on my laptop anywhere in my house is a dream come true. Now if I could only get my battery to last a little longer I'd be all set.
