GM Unveils 2005 Corvette.... And It's Gorgeous!

Sun Jan 04, 2004 1:40 pm

General Motors has unveiled the sixth generation Corvette, and, contrary to what I expected, it is drop dead gorgeous!

The highlights:

-First Corvette with fixed headlamps since 1962. I thought it would be ass ugly, instead I think it's the most beautiful Corvette since the 1963-1967 "Mid Year" Vettes. Lots of styling cues from past generation Corvettes, but they managed to avoid an unoriginal "retro" theme

-The 350 is no more.... the LS2 6.0 liter V-8 will generate 400 horsepower and will be the largest and most powerful base powerplant ever in a Corvette

-The 2006 Z06 will have a 427 cubic inch (YEAH BABY, YOU READ THAT RIGHT!) V-8 which is rumored to be "well north" of 500 horsepower.

-Transmission options are still the 4 speed automatic, and for those who know how to properly equip a sports car, the 6 speed manual

-The car is 5 inches shorter, 1 inch narrower. This was done with European markets in mind.

-The Z51 suspension package (as it is known on the C5) will turn into more of a high performance package, bridging what will be the large gap between the base Corvette and the Z06. The Z51 will require the six speed manual, will use tighter and shorter gearing in 1st through 4th gears in order to aid acceleration, will have a taller 5th gear in order to allow higher top speed, and will retain the trademark huge 6th gear overdrive. It includes not only upgraded suspension but also bigger brakes, Goodyear F1 Supercar tires, power steering fluid and transmission fluid coolers, and a number of other upgrades. A Z51 equipped coupe will be pretty much the equal of the present day Z06 in terms of performance.

-Performance numbers for a 6 speed coupe are estimated to be around 4.2 0-60 mph with a top speed of 180 to 185 mph.

-The interior finally gets enormous upgrades in terms of fit and finish and quality of materials used. This was maybe the biggest complaint about the C5. Some new features inside are available like a navigation system and an in dash 6 CD changer.

Okay, here are the pictures.

Gotta love the engine strategy they took.... talk about retro! "There's no replacement for displacement." 400 horses is a beautiful thing indeed.

The styling could not have been done any better, in my opinion. Where the C5 lacks character, the C6 has it in spades.

Here's to America's Sports Car.
It's a new day. Every moment matters. Now, more than ever.

Very nice indeed!

Looks like a unique mix of F360, Callaway C12 and that ever-lasting Corvette design.
I seriously think I just creamed my pants without any influence from any outside variables.

Very very nice. Kudos GM. You can do something right! You didn't mess up one of your only good vehicles.  Big grin

One thing I don't like too much is that the front is too reminiscent of the current Dodge Viper. Otherwise, this is a very nice product.

I like it... but I think the front resembles the Viper a bit too much...

Very nice looking though! Much better than Ford and their new Mustang and T-Bird.

Nice car.

When that particular model comes with a hydrogen powered engine, count me in. I'd rather save the life of at least one American soldier before i'd buy that.

I guess when the oil reserves run-out, perhaps they'll consider to put in something smaller.

The C5 also has round taillights:

They might be a little "ovelish", but mostly round.

Jutes85, I respect your opinion. However, let's face it. The Corvette will not sell in huge numbers. It is a very small category, so the net effect of having sports cars with powerful engines is very small indeed. It would be much more prudent for government resources to tackle the efficiency of all cars in general, or those that pose greater threats on the environment. This includes many SUV's. I'm in no way bashing SUV's, but what I am saying is that we must be logical if we are going to tackle environmental issues.

For example, Ford Explorers have done more damage to the environment as a whole than Chevrolet Corvettes. Let's not take away what little we can enjoy in today's society.

OK, GM has made a performance upgrade over there only fine product.
This Corvette looks as if GM combined the styling cues of the Ford GT, Mustang and Dodge Viper; thus creating a very beautiful automobile.  Big grin

I'd like to see GM put this power plant in to some full-sized Buicks and Cadillacs.

I am suprised I agree with Captiangomes in all of his post. This is an A.net first in terms of car talk.  Smile

Ford Explorers have done more damage to the environment as a whole than Chevrolet Corvettes

Maybe but what's even worse is the Lexus LX-470, Nissan Armada, H2 and Mercedes M-Class.
These stupid useless vehicles will NEVER be seen towing anything or going off road. They are purley status symbols and they do sell in larger volumes than the Corvette.
Sad.  Sad
Also the Corvette doesn't impair visability for other drivers like all SUVs including the small ones.

GM, thanks for the power upgrade to the Corvette. Now make a decent car people can afford like Ford has been doing

Well of course the had.

You get a good snowfall in Alaska and that Corvette isn't going anywhere until spring.

You aren't going to put out a lot of emissions with your car in the garage for six months.

At least with an Explorer you can much your way don't the streets before the snowplows get a chance to hit it.

Yet L-188 raises another good point!  Smokin cool

I've never even been to Alaska yet and I know you won't even find a Lexus, Mercedes or Porshe SUV. Yet you will find plenty of Ford Explorers in Alaska.
Therefore the Ford Explorers serve a purpose and is not the SUV to pick on.
Yet so many so called enviornmentalist love to pick on the Ford Explorer as the root of all evil as they drive around in Toyota Highlanders.
Makes NO sense to me.  Confused

Nope, but I do know the health care system bought new explorers for all of their clinics about two years ago. Which makes absolutely no sense.

Most of those people prefered the larger Ford Expedition.

Actually I do take that back.

The EMS squad in Aniak got on Oprah and Land Rover donated a Discovery to them.

Nothing wrong with a V-8 in an Excusion.

But you do see quite of them used by Native Corp heads ect.

Generally speaking the farther you get from the road system the older the vehicles are and the larger they get.

Small Pickups being the exception.

Don't ask me why.

Those started to rust out in the 1990's  Crying

Particularly those vacume hose choked Eagles.

Actually it is funny you bring up Corvette and I rust.

They hired a guy when I was out in the Bush that was from Alabama.

Anyway he had been there a week and started to proclaim that the Corvette would be the perfect car for out there.

Keep in mind that this town is 600 miles off the highway system, and has maybe 20 miles of gravel roads.

Anyway he started in on how he though that since the vette had a fiberglass body it would be perfect for the Aleutian Islands.

Actually there was one range rover Discovery in that town too, owned by the guy that had the power plant.

Somebody also had an MG but had it as a restoration project, so that doesn't count I guess.

I personally never could understand why somebody would by a Suburban/Expedition/Excusion or any pickup truck and lower it.

The new corvette looks nice, however the performance figures are disappointing.
Achieving a 0-60mph time of 4,2 seconds in a car with ""well north" of 500 horsepower" isn't very impressive considering that a Porsche 911 Turbo with 415 US-HP needs just 3,8 seconds.

"I've never even been to Alaska yet and I know you won't even find a Lexus, Mercedes or Porshe SUV. Yet you will find plenty of Ford Explorers in Alaska.

You might be right about Lexus, however the Porsche Cayenne performs very well off-road (and even better on-road). And a Mercedes G-Class drives one easily when your Ford Explorer got stuck long ago, it's off-road abilities are amazing and way better than those of 95% of all the so-called SUVs.

One more thing, my use of the Ford Explorer in my example was just because it is the best selling SUV. It is comparing the environmental effect of a vehicle that sells well into the hundreds of thousands of units every year, as opposed to whatever the Corvette sells. I will rephrase by saying that America's fetish with SUV's, most people not actually making use of their capabilities, has a greater negative effect on the environment than does the sale of a small number of sports cars. But please, I'm not saying SUV's should be banned, I'm just making an observation on what Jutes85 had to say.

Racko... the 4.2 second figure is for the 400 horsepower Corvette Coupe. The Z06, which is due out in the 2006 model year, will feature the upgraded engine and is expected to be below 3.5 seconds to 60.

The Germans and Italians wont be laughing if the Corvette gets better lap times than Porsche 911s and Ferrari 360 Modenas. I am a Porsche fanatic, but I will freely admit that the current 911 lacks inspiration. I can't wait to see the new 997, and Porsche better put some more passion into it.

The current 911 Carrera 4S and the Turbo are nice though  Smile

Considering that it's as fast as or faster than either of their competing offerings, I doubt they find it all that funny.

OK are you against aviation too?

No, i'm just saying that since everyone looks at how the North Americans pollute with thier useless SUV's, why has no one looked at aircraft that consume thousands of gallons of fuel per flight.

OK let's look at it. What suggestions would you like to make? Your talking as if aviation is a problem.
Please school us a little more as to what you are getting at.

I'd like to see some comparisons to the Ford GT.
I know the Ford is using a smaller engine. A 5.4 liter V8.

'fly....

He's probably another bitter Ford guy. It must be tough to like Fords and Douglases. How's it feel to be perpetually in second place, huh?  Big grin

I am actually a Ford guy myself.
I will give credit ware credit is due. You know the kind of cars I like and yes Ford makes the best in that class. Ford trucks are the best too. Just look at the number of commercial trucks that are Ford. GMs heavy duty trucks uses a rice-rocket engine. An Izusi Duramax diesel. GM should be ashamed of themselves. Dodge uses Cummings which is good but Ford makes there very own diesel.
GM gave up on full-sized and luxury sedans. They also gave up on convertibles and pony cars. I wouldn't be suprised if GM gave up on automobiles all together. GM may go the Boeing route and consider making sunglasses and milkshake blenders.  Sad
