Does Pete Rose Belong In The Hall Of Fame?

Tue Jan 06, 2004 5:48 am

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/baseball/mlb/01/05/pete.rose/index.html?cnn=yes

Now that he has admitted to gambling on baseball, should he be reinstated and be allowed to enter the hall of fame if he is voted in?

As the all-time hits leader, I think he should be there. In the article, he has a great point that drug addicts would have been suspended for 6 months and had their rehabilitation paid for by major league baseball, but there was nothing for gambling addicts.

Yes. His record as a player speaks for itself, and in the greater scheme of things, what he did was really not that bad. Besides, the Hall of Fame should recognize achievements in baseball, not good moral character.

I think the key argument about all of this is that he BET ON BASEBALL GAMES!!!

I don't think it is a moral judgment at all. He knew that betting on Baseball games was not allowed and yet he did it anyway. He still claims that he did not bet on his own games, but there is some evidence that seems to show that he was.

I believe that MLB does consider it a major offense for a player/manager to bet on Baseball games due to the possible inside information the person may have or that they could somehow effect the outcome of a game due to a bet they have placed.

My answer would be NO to the Hall of Fame.

Yes he does. The hall of fame is there as a recognition of his baseball achievements, not of his personal affairs.

Clinton was a good president, and what he does in his spare time has nothing to do with what he does as a president.

Personally, I slept better at night knowing he was getting some...

Yes he belongs in the Hall Of Fame. The Hall is based on onfield accomplishments, not off the field issues. Yes he bet on baseball as a manager, so that kills him going in the Hall as a manager. As a player though, he was the most competitive, hard nose, always hustling player out there, as well as having more hits than anyone else. He should be elected to the Hall, but not allowed to have any kind of significant role with MLB.

KROC,

Welcome back!

I like your point that he should be reinstated, but given no significant role with baseball. Acknowledge what he did on the field, but nothing else!

Has anyone read the Sports Illustrated article? I am planning to pick it up after work today.

Absolutely not...his totally immoral character outweighs his on-field achievements. We don't need trash like him in the Hall.

He is not worthy. His actions tainted the game.

If there was a Hall of Infamy....he would belong there.

So Yyz717. According to your logic, we will have to remove about 20% of the current Hall Of Fame members.

Not necessarily. Pete Rose is a marquee player though (like a Wayne Gretsky) and his cheating was very high profile. Like it or not, Pete Rose was an allstar....and a higher bar for ethical behaviour is expected for the upper echelon of players.

The sheer controversy over his cheating should be enough to keep him out of the HOF until well after he is dead, if ever.

He belongs in the hall because of his achievements, and he's finally taking steps to atone for his violation of the gambling rules.

Still, his decade-long lie factors against him.

I think a fair result would be for Pete to be posthumously eligible. He wouldn't be able to profit from his hall of fame presence, or do anything else to tarnish the hall by his actions, but he'd eventually wind up there.

I say let him in to the hall, but include the bit about him being banned for gambling on his plaque. His on the field accomplishments are more than enough to warrant him a spot in Cooperstown. I wouldn't want to see him managing again though. The vibe I'm getting from him in the media lately is that he expects to be reinstated, get into the hall, and get his old job of managing the Reds back.

Before that ABC Exclusive I used to say to myself..."Why not? He was a good player? And maybe he didn't really bet on baseball?

Now I say to myself: "You lied to me for 14 years and you wanna be on CoppersTown, go (censored Words) yourself"

Either way i think he will be rembered for many reasons for a long time

Absolutely not. In this incidence, Rose's off-the-field actions could very well have affected his on-the-field actions. It reeks of the Black Sox scandal, except the burden of misbehavior rests firmly on one man instead of an entire team. If players caught up in the Black Sox scandal (Shoeless Joe Jackson, for instance) are banned from the Hall, Pete Rose should also.

Pete Rose accepted a lifetime ban from baseball and then spent years lying about his gambling activities. Shortly before his new book comes out, he admits to betting. Kind of makes me wonder about the timing.
In my opinion, he should be in the Hall of Fame. But he broke a rule (fair or not, it was still a rule and he accepted the punishment) and is not eligible. It's that simple.
I wonder if he's already been told that the ban will be lifted, and maybe that's his reason for speaking out? I have a hard time believing he "saw the light" all of a sudden and had to go public without regard for money or re-instatement. There's more to the story.

Yes, he does.

Should he be allowed back participating in baseball, or managing? No, he shouldn't.

75 years from now when a kid walks into the hall of fame and asks "who has the record for the most hits" ??? What will they say ??? Can they say Pete Rose ??? Pete Rose is one of the greatest baseball players ever. He should be in the hall of fame.

Well I am more offended about the 14 year attempted snow job.

But he has that record that can't be denied.

Wait until he is dead, and then do it posthumously.

I would say yes. Hell there are people that do, and have done worse then what he did. It's not like he was betting from the dugout using his laptop.

Give him his place.

The term is "Hall of Fame." It appears that he does enjoy just a bit of fame, even among his detractors.

My answer is a resounding yes though I disliked him 20 years ago. So what, he gambled. That's not what brought baseball down, as much as the owners and players want to believe it was.

Yes he belongs in the Hall of Fame. When he was playing and accumulating all those Hall of fame stats he did not bet on baseball, he only bet on baseball when he was managing.

Shoeless Joe has been kept out far longer for something he may not have been involved in. The Hall will do just fine without #14.....

Yes, unfortunately he does. And he should be inducted the day after he dies.

And Shoeless Joe should be in there as well. I hope he gets in while Pete is not, just to piss off Rose. I've always wanted to visit the Hall but will not till Joe is in there. I'm not sure why, guess I'm just weird that way.

And what cartoon was it...."The Critic" maybe that was spoofing "Field of Dreams" by having Babe Ruth coming out of the corn demanding to know where the hookers were and Ty Cobb wanting to know the location of the nearest KKK rally. A beautiful and funny reminder that there are many in the Hall that are not saints.

That said, he bet on the game, then looked us in the eye and lied more times than he has hits. He should be recognised, but should see no profit or bragging rights from it.

You know what? Come to think of it, maybe he should be denied entry solely as punishment for that Moe Howard haircut, which is maybe worse than the betting and denials...

I honestly don't think he has changed his hair since the 70s. 4holer, I agree on Joe Jackson, to me he was a pawn and was brought down as an example for the entire "black sox" team.

I think Pete being let in after death is an idea, which would not let him profit from entry, however, by coming clean now, his book will no doubt climb to the top. I find it ironic that he is coming clean now that his book is coming out.

It would appear that everything about Pete Rose's career is already in the Fall of Fame. Examples:

1) batting helmet used when he got his record-setting 4,192 hit.
2) bat used in 1978 when he got hit #3,000
3) miscellaneous jerseys, spikes, and batting gloves
and.....
4) the Dowd Report, which details MLB's investigation of Rose's gambling

I'd eventually let him in, but a simple admission doesn't do it for me. I'd like to see some sort of remorse, some sort of contrition. And so far, I haven't seen it. An apology to his own teams would be a good start.

Jim Rome hit the nail on the head today. While he didn't bet on his team EVERY day, the days that he didn't bet on them spoke volumes.

And yes, Shoeless Joe belongs.

Fans love Pete. Remember the standing ovation he got as part of the All Century Team in San Francisco? Bud Selig remembers that, the fans have forgiven Pete and still remember the Red win 6-4 from 1984, and I'm sure he will be voted in. The fact that Bud Selig loves the guy helps.

Pete Rose should be allowed in the Baseball Hall of Fame. He was a great hitter and holds the record for most hits. He has admitted his mistake and is sorry for it.

Come on now. Rose admitted his mistake (despite lieing about it for 14 plus years) but he NOT sorry for what he did. He hasn't said it, and he doesn't act like he it.
