2004 Detroit Auto Show

Wed Jan 07, 2004 3:14 am

Well, the time is near! The Detroit Auto Show will open its doors to the public in a few days, and I'm getting excited. So far, there have been some very cool debuts, and other vehicles that were recently shown elsewhere. I will post some of those right here. Feel free to post some others as well and also feel free to discuss which vehicles impress you the most.

Porsche Boxster S 50th Anniversary Edition

This Porsche is looking amazing! Too bad they charge an arm and a leg for options. But in my opinion, this is still the roadster to beat.

Mazda MX-Micro Sport Concept

This Mazda has some interesting details. Practical, good looking, and funky.

Volkswagen Concept T Offroad Coupe

This is a really cool concept, but looks too weird to be taken seriously. I'd love to see a refined, production ready version.

Audi A8 W 12

Preview of Audi's new "waterfall" grille. Looks nice. W12 must pull like a train!

Audi Le Mans Quattro Concept

Shown elsewhere previously, but first time in North America. Based on the Lamborghini Gallardo.

Audi S4 Cabriolet

Also the first time in North America.

Nissan Actic Concept

Weird. Renault's influence on Nissan is apparant.

2006 Lincoln Mark LT

Lincoln failed with the Blackwood, but they wont give up! Looks infinitely better than the Escalade, but I still don't understand this niche.

Jeep Rescue

Jeep has concepts every year, and they hardly ever make it into production. Do the engineers have anything better to do? Or are the bean counters shelving every project?

Lincoln Aviator Concept

An SUV for Superfly???  Big grin

Lincoln Mark X

Nah, this is Superfly's next convertible.

I had other vehicles in this thread where the pictures wouldn't work. I'll repost them another time maybe, or some of you can do that yourselves. These vehicles were ...

Ford Bronco Concept
Pintiac Solstice ... really really nice vehicle
Chevrolet Nomad
Toyota FTX
VW V10 TDI Touareg
VW Concept R
Honda SUT ... repulsive!
Saturn Curve Concept ... the first interesting Saturn

That Lincoln Mark X is sick!
I love that car already!
As for the other Lincolns, yikes! That Jeep looks cool but I think the current Rubicon is an awesome Jeep.
That VW looks like it could be killed with a bottle of raid.

Of interesting note:

Porsche is trying to get some testosterone injections into the Boxster since it has become mainly a "woman's" Porsche (men are buying the 911---rightly, so!). They feel that if they can butch it up, then sales will increase accordingly (don't flame me, Porsche is the source).

Audi A8W12 has already been approved for production. The waterfall grill will be the standard on all new Audi developments--although not as dramatic as the one pictured (which looks out of scale). I think Automobile magazine last month had an article on the W12 and the new SUV. Oddly--and you wouldn't think this--the waterfall grill looks great on the next gen TT.

Lincoln has already shelved the Aviator and will concede the middle market to Ford (this was released last week). They have not given a date on the termination--but I imagine that some great deals can be made on the current Aviator.

Just my automotive $.02.

At the DC auto show last week, I was wowed by the concept Chevy Bel Air. the Lincoln Mark X above is impressive!

Good to see that the Detroit show has become a major international event, ala Frankfurt, Tokyo, etc. But too many "rice rockets," in my opinion.

I think I'll pop on by for a visit on saturday. I hope it won't be as bad as last year. So crowded, it was like a keg party without any beer.

The Lincoln Mark will do well I think, much like the F-150 Lariat. I think it is one sexy truck and if I had 70,000 that was to heavy for my pocket well I would probably buy one. I would love to see the Bronco if you could post it, Bronco's and Tahoes are my favourite SUV's.

Spacepope, I have learned the hard way not to go on the weekends to the show, and not on the holiday Monday that affects the show. It is incredibly crowded on any of those days. What I do is get there between 10 and 11am on a weekday, and that way I'm not fighting crowds as much.

I will try to find other sources for the other vehicles tomorrow and post those pictures. The offerings at this year's show seems quite varied. I am really excited about going.

JAL, I agree! And think about this ... that grille is somewhat tacked on. The new A6 to be introduced this year will incorporate that grille with everything else new too. I predict the new A6 will be one stunning vehicle when it comes out. Hopefully it will finally get the respect it deserves against its German competitors (E Class and 5 Series).

It's about time damn it!

Ford needs to FIRE the young DIP$H!T that wants a luxury/truck (Blackwood).
Send that idiot back to GM, BMW, Lexus or ware ever the hell they come from!
No true Ford personel would do such harm.

Do you have any specs on the engine of the Mark 10?

I hope Ford drops in the existing Triton V10 but with 4 valves per cylinder giving the car 400HP off the line.

They better not use the 4.6!

Mr. King, I too didn't like the Bronco Concept much. Ford is going far too retro. Does this mean there isn't a future with Ford? They must look to the past? Even the Mustang, which I thought was a knockout, is annoying me a bit too. I don't like the rear quarter windows on the production car. Also, as spectacular the Ford GT is in its own right, why does it have to be such a rip-off of the original GT40?

Anyways, I still have to post more pics!

Also to be revealed at the Detroit Auto Show is the Mercedes E320 CDI diesel. http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/micro_stories.pl?ACCT=638221&TICK=NAIAS&STORY=/www/story/01-05-2004/0002082975&EDATE=Jan+5,+2004 I'm definitely looking forward to the return of the Mercedes diesel sedan to North America!

Also from Mercedes at the show:

From Chrysler, based on many Mercedes parts:

I like that new Dodge Magnum and Chrysler 300N.

It's about time they got back to the V8 Rear-wheel drive market.  Smokin cool

Those M-body Grand Fury/Diplomat/Fith Avenues are getting up there in age. I am sure the Mopar loyalist are ready to get a new car.

Superfly, the Lincoln Mark X is definitely nice. It's very American, which is great! Lincoln with their concepts are not trying to be something else. I hope they are successful in reinventing themselves. Their current lineup is very stale, if I may say so. The Navigator and Aviator are overpriced Expeditions and Explorers, respectively. The LS is a poor imitation of import luxury sedans. The Town Car is far too cheap to be taken seriously. And it also lacks the styling of previous generations, which to me looked far nicer.

I think Lincoln may be able to show a little class in the American luxury car field where Cadillac is currently lacking, IMHO.

I haven't had time to look through it all but there's some pretty neat cars in there and as usual some that are...well, they just make you wonder what they were thinking. Some of my favorites so far are the Volvo S40/V50, Ford Freestyle, Ford 500 (finally something that people would actually want to own and not just rent), and the Scion tC. Surprising to see a sharp-looking Scion after the odd-looking xA and xB. If they could price it reasonably like I hear they will, they should have a winner. Looks like it would go up against sport compacts like the RSX.

I also like the GT (of course) and the new Five-Hundred sedan. Go Ford!

Superfly, I think you will be disappointed. The Lincoln Mark X is likely go be put into production. But it will be based on the same platform as the Lincoln LS and the outgoing Ford Thunderbird. It should be powered by the 280 hp 3.9 V8. Needless to say, it will probably suffer the same fate as the Thunderbird, and also the Maurauder, with generally lackluster demand. It's too bad they don't offer a supercharged 3.9 V8 with well over 300 hp.

Holy crap, all of Fords production cars look EXACTLY the same! Even that new Lincoln truck is just an F-150 with a new grille.

That Jeep looks like the bastard offspring of a Jeep Liberty and a Hummer H2.

No, no, you have it all wrong. That's definatly a cross between a wrangler and a Honda Element.

 Pissed  Pissed  Pissed  Pissed

WHY?!?!?!

They are so close yet still off the Mark!
A Lincoln buyer does not want a high-reving small V8!
Ford already has the proper engine on the shelves for these cars. The 5.4 liter 32valve engine that's in the Navigator should go in this car along with the Town Car, Grand Marquis and the Maruarder.
Could the average feul economy mandated by the government have something to do with this?
SUVs are exempt from this.

I sort of agree with you about the current Town Car. The 2003 Cartier L Series Town Car came pretty close to the 'classic' Lincolns with new grille and return of the hood ornament. I am glad to see the Panther platform from 1979 still around after 25 years. I think that Contenintal concept would be a good replacement becasue it's body on frame. If they did a convertible version of it too, it would seriously outshine other vehicles in it's class.

Easy there! LOL. I didn't make myself clear. I was quoting the article when it said it "should" be powered by the 3.9 V8. I happen to disagree with Ford on this point, if in fact they intend to use it as the powerplant. So basically, if the Mark X comes out, it will be a rebodied Ford Thunderbird.
