Why Won't Hillary Run?

Sat Jan 10, 2004 1:31 am

If the concensus is that she's the only one on the Democratic side that could win, why doesn't she run?

Uh, maybe because she wouldn't win. Hillary has way too much baggage to run for President against a popular incumbent. Also, her numbers nationwide aren't that high except among the far left wing of the Democrat party.

Do you think she'll be the nominee in '08?

The reason why she's not running is because she made a commitment to New York that she would serve out her full term as Senator, it was a pledge to quiet complaints about certain issues such as the fact that She "never" lived in NY before running for Senate.

People were saying that she was just "using" NY's Senate seat as a spring board for running for President, she countered by promising to fullfill her full term as Senator from the State of New York.

If she were to quit the Senate and run for President she would lose tons of support, especially in New York State.

Yes. She won't be up against an incumbent in 2008, and that will also allow the GOP the maximum amount of rope with which it could possibly hang itself .

Hey, after what Bush is coming up with concerning illegal immigrants, I am starting to doubt him. I think opening up the borders is insane.

I, too, would welcome Hillary with open arms at this point. I'm getting really disgusted with this administration using a culture of fear to manipulate and control the people of this country.

Actually, I'm more disappointed by how easy it is for them to do than the fact that it's happening.

I think the ideal mix is to have a Republican president with Democratic House and Senate, or a Democrat President with Republican House and Senate. It just evens things out a lot more and allows for a more moderate management of the country.

I doubt Hillary will run this year for the reasons named above (her promise to finish out her term, the fact the GOP is strong right now) as well as the fact that she'd be better suited to campaign for whomever gets the Democratic nomination. She's smart enough to keep her head down during primary season and then come out full tilt for the nominee, raising funds for them, appearing with them when it's possible. Look at how much her book grossed - the woman commands a large amount of attention and where attention is, money often is. More than just ultra-left wing Democrats are interested in a Hillary presidency. So I think after '04 (assuming the Democratic nominee doesn't win, then I think she'd run in '08.) The big question is who's going to be the Republican nominee in '08...maybe it would be wise of G Dub to drop Cheney and get a new running mate so that he might groom them to run.

Hillary is waiting it out to recast herself.

By 2008 she will have cut her teeth as a foreign policy hawk, a civil libertarian, a social moderate, and a budget deficit hawk. All the usual barbs the GOP can throw at her will by then be blunted. Also, look for more pro-military legislation, and photo-ops with children in schools. At least Hillary will not be holding a book upside down, ala Dubya.

Right now, Hillary's experience and achievements on the Hill have been tepid at best, and she is still being depicted as some ultra-left Lady Macbeth by the right. By 2008, the woman will have done a Tina Turner turn, circa 1984, sans Ike (Bill) and with a new Mojo.

Maybe because she made a vow that she wouldnt run? Once politicans start backtracking like that they lose votes. Besides she needs to serve an apprenticeship and new york is it, otherwise she wouldnt have enough experience and frankly during a war on terror you need experienced people.
It is amazing what can be accomplised when nobody takes the credit

Doubtful...
despite any real-life contempt she may have for him, as the virtual Don of the Democrat mob, he's just too valuable for her.

That... and do you really think Slick Willy will miss a chance at history-- i.e., the first First Master/First Husband/First Man/First XXXX/etc?!

-76M, I've got it on fairly good authority that Bill and Hill are practically separated...I wouldn't be surprised to see her ditch Bill formally in the recasting Jaysit's talking about.

I agree. For now at least.
I predict a renewal of their vows, and yet another boring maudlin book where she will explain what marriage means to her and how she rediscovered the meaning of Loretta Lynns song. Dems will eat it up, moderates will be moved to pull that lever for her, and the far right will scream at how Hillary has outdone them on the whole family values schtick. Bill will have to tame his big boy, or do what GW Bush Sr did - find a low key mistress who keeps quiet, likes to give head, and doesn't put a high value on cum stains on dresses.

ConcordeBoy -

"First Master" - I can pretty much guarantee you that the first male spouse to a female president won't be going by that name. Particularly not the first spouse to a Pres. HRC.

Jay - I've never even heard a rumor about GHWB and a mistress. Care to elaborate?

Jennifer Fitzgerald.
State Department, China bureau. Pretty high up in the pecking order.
Stoic, wasp, blond, late-40 something (back then) - more in the Camilla Parker mould, than the trashy types preferred by Bill. They had a relationship for nearly a decade, that ended shortly before the '92 election. Have no idea if GWB Sr messed around since then or before. However, looking at Babs, I hardly blame him. He was a pretty good looking guy in his prime, and Babs was well...Babs.

As an aside, I have no idea if Ms Fitzgerald gave head or not.
But head is a good thing. To give or to get.
Maybe thats why Bill went out for some. Can't imagine HRC doing it. Or Babs for that matter.

Why should she? She gets more attention if she does not run, could be the strongest Democratic contender, who never runs. If she runs & loses, then the strongest name in the democratic party would have been destroyed. Just look at Al Gore, media does not even pay attention to him anymore, the Gore endorsement of Dean lasted for what, "5" minutes.

Definitely wouldn't be "First Master." According to Etiquette, only a man who has not earned his bachelor's degree is addressed as "Master." Weird, I know, but talk to Emily Post, not me.

Wow! I had never heard about this. I did find a story about it on Newsmax. Given Newsmax's conservative slant, if it's on there, while being critical of GHWB then it's got to be true.

Hillary is an opportunist. She would run if she could win. Democrats know that GWB is unbeatable in 2004.

An opinion unrestricted by realities . . .
And without commenting on relative merit of the persons involved.

She will not run this time. Not a sure thing for her in '04.

GWB is likely to pull some very charming rabbit out of his hat in the last couple of months before elections, maybe even Osama Bin Waiting for him. Even if he does not, there is a lot of advantage to incumbency especially if it is virtual-wartime election.

On the other hand, he cannot run again in '08. Cheney will be seen as too old. Don't know who the GOP big guy will be then. But the pendulum does swing. About every eight years we get tired of whoever is in the Whitehouse and a Democratic victory is far more likely. Meanwhile, the Dems top guys get beat up in '04 and don't look all that electable in '08.

Up to the plate steps Hillary to save the party.

And she proved on 9/11 how fast she can find a TV camera. It took us two days to learn that NY had a senior Senator.

Oh, and with or without Bill? She will do what her handlers tell her to do. Maybe she will need to keep the "stand by your man" vote.

There you go 76M. More unsupported babble.

She will not run because of her promise? Oooooooooooook, sure.

YYZ717 had it right, she could not win this year, She is hoping for a weak GOP canidate in 2008 when she has a chance. I cannot think of anyone I'd be less likely to vote for in '08 though.
