Wed Jan 14, 2004 7:33 am

I know this has question has been asked before and has raised quite a bit of controversy, still, I'm asking it...who's gay? Who are you out to?

I am...I'm out to mostly everyone except my extended family

I'm out to anyone who wants to know (and always have been)..i.e., I would never lie about my sexual orientation if asked because there's absolutely no reason to... but I also don't introduce myself as "TWFirst, gay person" because there's also absolutely no reason to. However, if during casual conversation with coworkers or strangers, and the context of the conversation is such that mentioning a significant other is warranted, then I will say "my partner and I" or whatever, and assume they'll assume I'm referring to a male partner.

For the record, I'm not gay.

While I like caricatures and anything tongue-in-cheek and do as well sometimes attempt to crack gay jokes, I think this cartoon by Mark Fiore explains all that needs to be explained:

Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

Not really, don't be too serious about it. They're all just having a bit of fun. In reality a very sizable minority of the users on this site are gay. I'd guess maybe 30% or more.

Thank you Fun Flyer. We'll make sure all your friends and the 13-15 year old female crowd knows how straight you are. It's a good thing you posted, because otherwise, people might not have known, and that would definitely be a horrible thing if somebody thought you were gay. I'm sure the reason you clicked on this thread was just to make absolutely sure you were not mistaken for a gay a.net member. Good job.

I'm out to SOME people...I guess my friends and such.. not really anyone at work and nobody in my family. I think some people know at work cause one night I was out and about in West Hollywood and someone who used to work where I worked saw me out. I was polite and went up and chatted w/ her. She's like, "This is my first time in a gay bar...kinda wierd" I was a little offended because this one bar is someone pretentous and everyone there was talking, not like making out. And then she's like, "you come here often?" I said, "yes" and then the next week at work I had 2 of the girls she used to be friends w/ come up to me and ask, "so what did you do this past weekend, w here did you go.." when they never asked before...

Anyway, I've noticed you get more respect when people find out casually than when you walk around telling everyone. And for me, I'm always amused at the surprise factor when someone does find out...

After many years of being uptight and, to be honest, scared, of my sexuality, I'm out to the vast majority of my family and my colleagues. I've come to the conclusion now that it's better to be truthful wherever possible and I take the view, like TWFirst, that if anyone asks me if I'm gay or about my partner I will always give them an honest answer.

I must credit my other half with this shift in attitude, without her I would never have had the courage to do this and I certainly wouldn't be where I am today.

I've been amazed since I joined A.net at the number of openly gay people posting here, and judging by some of the less helpful replies to this thread we may have a few in denial as well...

Anyway, I've noticed you get more respect when people find out casually than when you walk around telling everyone.

Yeah, I can probably agree with that- also.. it's different when you tell someone from when they ask. When they ask, they seem to be more open to an answer (probably because they already suspect it).

Anyway, I've been on here for a over three years and never really bothered to "catagorize" myself to others (more so recently in responding to certain threads), but since the thread is here.. sure why not.

but I also don't introduce myself as "TWFirst, gay person" because there's also absolutely no reason to.

TWFirst,
Plus, another side is working... and issue I think about is that; I'm an employee with strong work ethics, however, if I make being gay such an issue, I wouldn't be the guy with "excellent work skills" but rather "oh he's gay, but he's a really good worker." Anyone agree?

People who do know -don't make it an issue because I don't make it an issue- and that's how it should be.

And Greg is handsome. Doesn't he look like BigPhil?

I don't think being out at work means you're making your sexual orientation "such an issue", and I do think it is important to be out at work. But again, "out" doesn't mean you make it a point to go around and tell every single person you're gay right off the bat. It means in the course of everyday conversations and within proper context you mention your partner just as straight people do, or you have pictures on your desk with your partner in them, etc. I think purposely hiding or lying about your orientation/relationship is not admirable and doesn't garner respect. If I thought I wouldn't get a deserved promotion simply because I'm gay, I'd find a different employer pronto.

And the picture above is "BigPhil", not Greg. To my knowledge, we haven't been privileged to see Greg as of yet. Surely, it is because his awesome beauty would cause copious amounts of drooling, and he doesn't want anyone to short out their keyboard....

Though I'm really not around here much anymore, add me to the list.
As with TWFirst, I really won't lie, but I really have no interest in telling people unless they are that interested.

It's a very small part of my life.

And for the record, yes, BigPhil is a damned fine looking guy (but anyone can doctor a picture, right?  Smile).

Andy, by the way... long time, no speak. We should meet up some time in FLL. I realize I've been saying that for quite a while; I guess I really should do something about that!  Smile

TWFirst, Your right.. I believe my post may have shed a different light than what I was actually trying to say.

I didn't mean so much as lying about my sexual orientation-actually, I'm not asked if I am gay or not at work. On the same token, I wouldn't consider me not talking about it, "hiding"... But during the normal course of conversation, things obviously do come up.

What I generally meant was that between coworkers, not so much management, and people I've talked to agree, why should I be, if it was the case, be considered as a "loyal employee and he's gay too." Yeah, it's not really an issue to some, but its just something I ponder at.

O.K... I thought that photo was to much like BigPhil.

TWF ~

Yeah, I've been all over but I'd rather call Key West my base than FLL. Most of the population here works 2 - 4 jobs because rent is so high, so the fags aren't as visible, but we're here. heck, there were 6500 of us carrying a "pride" flag that was about 1.5 miles long, the entire length of Duval Street.

Back to rent, the 2br apartment I'm in cost as much as my place on the Galt Mile, and it's 1/2 the space with a view of a salt pond (marsh).

Drop me a note.. nate@flyfca.com or PreppyGothRaver on aol im...

You should hop down, or I'll fly up and I'll introduce you to some buddies at Spirit & we can hit Mustards or Boom or something...
