Is It Illegal To Open Someone Else's Mail?

Thu Jan 15, 2004 9:03 am

Hello out there. Big grin

For the past few months, I've received someone elses mail a few times a week. It's for a Mr Chung and a Mrs Long. I'm not oriental or asian.

Anyhow, today I got fed up and instead of leaving it for the postman (marked wrong address), I opened it. It's an electricity bill from the company Enbridge for the amount of $751.37. I phoned them to let them know that if they continue to send this guys bill to my address that they'll never get their money!  Laugh out loud

The electrical service is for an address about 6 miles from my home, but, the mailing address is for my home (with the wrong postal code). I've lived at my home now for 7 1/2 years.

Anyhow, apparently the law of the land here in Canada is such that you are legally allowed to open any mail that the postman puts in your mailbox. You have the right to open it.

So, how about you. Do you open mail that you find in your mailbox that's not yours or leave it for the postman? Honestly, have you ever opened someone else's mail out of curiosity? I have.  Insane

Is it legal or illegal to open someone else's mail where you live?

I'm sure "terror laws" give the government right to open your mail, so go ahead.

Mr. Spaceman....dunno.....but hey if you've marked it to be returned on several times and the postal service is not returning it....then go for it!

You mentioned that you were not Mr. Chung or Mrs. Long....so I guess they just keep getting the Wong address.  Innocent

Yes, in the U.S. it is illegal. A federal offense, in fact.

Vaporlock, that was absolutely awful. But it definitely cracked a smile.  Smile

It is not a crime to open any mail sent to your address in the US, no matter what name is on it. It is a crime to open another persons mailbox and remove mail though.

Is it illegal if you only remove the mailbox and leave the mail on the ground?  Nuts

"Anyhow, apparently the law of the land here in Canada is such that you are legally allowed to open any mail that the postman puts in your mailbox. You have the right to open it."

I was not aware of this... And now, it makes me uncomfortable to know (Thinking of some of the cretins I left behind at my former residence).
