2) DI.fm (internet based).
3), 4), 5) - none existing as they tend to play only artists with the following in their name: "Project", "DJ", "Featuring", "Presenting" etc.

Someone help me out. What is this obsession with radio stations all calling themselves KISS FM? If Im right only one in the entire country can have those actual call letters, so the others must just use it for the sake of the name maybe? Charlotte has one, Pittsburgh has one, seattle has one, Dallas has one... Why? It is really annoying to me for some reason. Is it a Clearchannel conspiracy?  Confused

It depends on the station using KISS. Most stations using Kiss are Clear Channel but other including Infinity, Entercom, etc also use Kiss. Two of my favorite stations use Kiss and that's KIIS LA, and KISS 103.5 Chicago. Both are Clear Channel.

Erik,
Kiss in Charlotte is owned by Infinity, KISS in Dallas and Pittsburgh are Clear Channel, and Kiss in Seattle is also Infinity.
Hope that answers your question.

Really the only station that I am a huge fan of 96 Rock in Atlanta (96.1).

Otherwise, in Dallas I usually listen to Fox Sports 1190, 93.3 The Bone, or 92.5 KZPS.

I think there are only 5 or 6 radio stations in my market, and most of them suck.

1. Fav station is the one I am listening to now.
89.9 WNRN http://www.wnrn.org Gotta love good community radio, plus you can listen to them online.

2. WAMU- NPR in DC.

3. DC 101, rock station in DC.

4. KFMA in Tucson, had the funniest morning show in town. Though one of the DJs left for a better job in a bigger market.

5. The Edge (don't remember the freqency or call numbers) in Phoenix. Good alternative/indie rock station.

There seems to be a Clear Channel-owned KISS FM in just about every city in the Midwest. Here in Ohio, every major city has a KISS FM owned by Clear Channel. The only exception (thankfully) is Columbus. However, Columbus' WNCI is owned by Clear Channel and broadcasts the standard top-40 KISS FM format. They haven't changed the station's identity because it used to be the flagship station for NCI Group before it was taken over by Clear Channel, and remains Columbus' most popular radio station.

Regardless, Columbus has a great variety of radio stations; I don't need a CD player in the car since there's always something good on. My top 5 choices for best station in Columbus would have to be:

WBZX New Rock 99.7 The Blitz

WAZU 107.1 The Big Wazoo Rock Radio

WLVQ Q-FM 96 Ohio's Best Rock

WWCD CD101 The Alternative Station

WBNS 97.1 More Music

NPR National Public Radio

In depth neutral coverage of issues that other mainstream and tabloids won't cover.

KROC was a good station down in Los Angelas years ago.  Big grin

I hardly listen to music radio stations anymore. I love classic rock, classic soul/r&b and disco. How ever, I am sick and tired of hearing 'Life In The Fast Lane', 'D'yer Maker', 'Always and Forever' and 'I Will Survive' on the radio for the millionth time!

I just bring my 8tracks with me while in the car.

I only listen to 2/3 radios:

I've always wondered why the US radio are all named WXZC or WKKM. Is it to make everybody confused ?

"I've always wondered why the US radio are all named WXZC or WKKM. Is it to make everybody confused ?"

Probably for the same reason airports are named MSP instead of The Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport. Simplicity.

But back to my original question of why every radio station is named KISS. It is not every stations call sign. So only one station in the country is actually KISS-FM. But here is an example from Boston's KISS-FM:

business address:
KISS 108 FM (WXKS)
99 Revere Beach Parkway
Medford, MA 02155

Their actual call sign is WXKS. Why do they want to be KISS when they are WXKS? In Minneapolis there is 101.3 KDWB which is a top 40 very much like the KISS-FMs are. They use their actually call letters. Anybody work for a radio station and can give an actual answer?

Call letters are assigned so the FCC can license and keep track of stations. W prefixes are used for stations EAST of the MISSISSIPPI RIVER. K prefixes west of the Mississippi.

97.7 "the x, the future of rock and roll" in oxford, oh (where university of miami is located) is pretty cool station. It's independent radio, they play a pretty good mix of stuff. Songs off popular albums that never are heard on mainstream for example "ball and biscuit" by the white stripes. They often tend to prophasize singles as well such as "god put a smile on your face" by coldplay. It was in rotation far before it could be heard on any other station. It's a very fresh alternative to all the mainstream stations out there right now. Raymond (dustin hoffman) mentions it in the movie Rainman as well. You can listen live at http://www.woxy.com/

NPR. National Public Radio. That's pretty much it. They don't advertise at me for 40 minutes an hour. They teach me stuff. I like it.

WBER (90.5 FM) is a great station when they're not playing cookie monster metal or neo-whiny gloss punk. They wor Crapchester's original alternative station. I was a DJ there for four years in the mid-90s. You can find them online and it's definitely worth a listen. They don't advertise at me either.

My top 5:

1. 97.9 WNCI (Top 40...Columbus, OH)
2. 105.9 WWJM "The Mix" (Top 40 & "Bob & Sheri" in the morning...Zanesville, OH)
3. 103.3 WVYB "The Vibe" (Top 40...Daytona Beach, FL)
4. 103.5 WJZA (Smooth Jazz....Lancaster, OH)
5. 95.7 "Fidelity" (Latin music mostly...some Top 40 if I remember right....San Juan, PR)

K prefixes west of the Mississippi.

With one interesting exception (if I have the story straight)....Pittsburgh still has one radio station (KDKA) with the "K" as the call letter...They were the first station in the US & have retained the "K" since the beginning.

Kay- gotta agree with you about VCPR- I usually listen to that after hijacking a taxicab!  Big grin

Just for the record, the VAST majority of the Kiss stations are Clear Channel, and they all share about 4 logos. The Charlotte & Seattle stations (coincidentally the 2 I listen to) are Infinity owned but use the Clear Channel logos, so I'm inclined to believe that they were sold by Clear Channel.

Yes, only one station can have the call letters 'KISS' but most of the stations with that name don't capitalize it (e.g. Kiss). For Clear Channel, it's all about brand recognition for people who listen to their local Kiss staton and travel or move to a new market. They hear the Kiss name and listen to it because it will play the same music that they're used to at home. Clear Channel actually lists "Top 40 (Kiss)" as a format/genre for their stations, so they're al pretty much identical except the CLT & SEA ones, which are similar but much better IMHO.

WOXY 97.7FM, Oxford, Ohio
-- Definitely the best station in the country hands down, if you're into modern rock music. Incredible, especially in this day and age where everything is corporately owned.

I like listening to BBC Radio 5 Live, especially to listen to 606, a football call-in show.

I also like my local NPR affiliate, KOPB 91.5FM.

I listen to RTHK Radio 1 out of Hong Kong sometimes, especially when I'm missing home a lot.

I DJ for KPSU 1450AM here in Portland, so yes, I'm fond of us/them too.

There are a lot of great college stations in the States, including WNYU (New York) & KALX (Berkeley).
