Software For Filing Taxes

Mon Jan 26, 2004 1:32 am

Has anyone experience with software for filing Income Tax? I've never done it online and thought I'd give it a shot this year. Went to Wal-Mart yesterday and there were two to choose from. One about $38 and another about $79 with very little difference on the boxes (the $79 version's box was a little thicker). Does anyone know the difference between the two?

I see you're from Canada, so I don't know if I can be of any help. I've used TurboTax here in the States from at least the last 6 or 7 years and have had no problems. There are some other titles. but I've never used them. Does Intuit make a TurboTax for Canada?

TurboTax is the absolute best tax prep program out there. It is extremely simple to use and literally walks you through the return prep by answering yes and no question.

I buy the "basic" version for $19.95. TurboTax also and advanced and premium version for $39.95 and $59.95. IMO, the advanced versions offer a bit more flash but very little additional substance, unless you have a sole proprietorship and need to file Schedule C, in which case the advance models are a bit better.

If you've got a simple 1040 with just the standard deduction or regular deductions like mortgage interest, property taxes and charity - the 19.95 version works great.
