More Memory Needed For My PC- Help!

Tue Jan 27, 2004 5:16 am

I currently have 256k in my PC but would like to install more RAM. However I seem to have hit a slight problem.
Several of my 'contacts' tell me that obtaining extra RAM is becoming difficult
mainly due to the fact that as prices are dropping rapidly it would be just as well to buy another, more powerful memory unit. Thats ok for them to say that but what about people who are on a lower budget?
Surely extra RAM can be obtained at places here in the UK outlets or via Mail Order?
Can anyone provide some info here .My e-mail address is available for sensible replies as well as the postings here.
Thanks!!

You should tell what kind of system (processor, mainboard, current type of ram) you have so we can help  Smile

Yes RAM is cheap, Yes its easy to obtain at about any computer store. However, you need to know what type to get. There are a bunch of different types of RAM running around with different bus speeds. Get the wrong one and at best it will just not work.

Many times you can figure out the system bus speed by just knowing the brand and speed of the processor, this is not 100% as sometimes both AMD and Intel issued the same speed processor with a different FSB speed.

Sometimes there is a jumper setting with a label on the motherboard. This is not often the case though.

Usually the system BIOS can tell you. When on startup the computer says hit delete to enter setup you hit delete and browse around in there and usually there is something that will say. Careful not to change anything in there though unless you mean it.

If its one of those out of a box mass marketed store bought computers you may need to check the Mfgs website to find out the exact info.

Just take one out and bring it with you. Make note of how many open slots your have remaining, and how many sticks you currently have installed.

We need to know what kind of memory, system board and processor you are using before making any reccomendations. There isn't really anything like a "more powerful memory unit". As long as you are meeting the system board/processor specs it won't make any difference what brand memory you use.

RAM can be bought from any computer store.
