It is a nice looking ride. If you go to VWVortex.com you'll see a lot of modded Dubs. This one is done pretty cleanly, in many ways an anti-rice rice racer... but of course it is German.

The only thing that turns me off is the stretched tires. Personally I dislike the look and cannot think it is a good idea either.

Most of the issue is that he stupidly spent thousands of aftermarket dollars on something as innane as a VW.....

He should have just bought a better performing car.

What you gotta keep in mind is that while you guys in the states have your Mustangs and Corvettes and all those great cars, here in Europe the Golf is a pretty sweet car and gets modded alot!

It is even more stupid to spend thousands of aftermarket dollars on every car. I (errr...my parents) bought my Golf for approximately 30.000 DM (we bought it before the Euro introduction), since that I have not invest an additional Cent into this car because it is totally useless and it is looking butt-ugly in my opinion.

I'm not much for modified cars, I'd rather put the extra money into a better car as well. But I do like it when it is done conservatively. This one doesn't scream out at you, and I respect that. However, I'm not digging the BBS type rims on the Golf. Some time ago, I saw a Golf with 911 Turbo look alike wheels, and I thought that looked spectacular. Nice looking car overall though.

I had a 2000 A4 VR6 GTi that was similar to the black car above, except it had Oettinger RE 18's on it and a Remus exhaust. It was nice, but the car had a lot of flex problems with the stiffened suspension, not to mention the other VW antiquities.

Spending money on cars is based on personal taste, as what most people who do are looking for is exclusivity. You may buy a more expensive car, but some people don't like the 'me too' impression that creates. Whatever you can afford, that's all that means.

Spending lots of money on modding up a more basic car is pretty dumb. The only reason to do it is because you like working on cars and personalizing them.

As for the wheels I think 18s look a little too big on the Golf, especially with stretched tires. I like the red Golf above too, I think it was one of VWVortex's project cars.

DesertJets, yes that red Golf was one of vwvortex's project cars. I usually don't like a lot of these modified cars, but that one was done with impeccable taste (if I may say so). That's why I included it in this post, because I like that style of wheels with the Golf's body. They seem to complement eachother well.

too bad Golfs are getting heavier and heavier, as is the trend for most actually... but the car on this thread is Respectable. Revives in me old feelings.  Smile

In 1993 I bought my first car, a 1986 Golf GTI, 112bhp, 940Kgs. The perfect car for my needs of then. So enjoyable, fast, safe, ...attaching.

It was similar to this one, the only difference being the rims:

I am not getting used to the new front of the Golf 5, but opposed to the pic above, definitely looks more actual! Big grin

The funny thing about the new Golf is that the current Golf still doesn't look outdated. In fact, the current Golf (MK IV) actually looks like a more balanced and natural design, while the new Golf looks too "styled" instead of natural. It's like fake boobs versus real boobs. Real boobs will always reign supreme.  Big grin I'll reserve my final judgement until I see it in the flesh, and I think it will grow on me.

I like the new Golf. It still looks like a Golf, but like a 21st century Golf. Remember, cars have to look good for 7 to 8 years, not just when they come out. Same goes for BMW, I think they're going the right way with their new designs, 7ers are becoming more and more popular, the 6er is sold out for the whole 2004, the Z4 was selling like hell last summer and the 5er definitely looks more modern than the E-Class or the A6 (granted, it is quite old).

I had three of them buzz past me last summer, I think they were racing. Just to piss them off I accelerate ahead of them and then slow down again and keep changing lanes  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

The Golf isn't a bad car, pretty comfy even for a tall guy like me. But I can't afford the GTi and the repairs cost a lot of $$$. WHat exactly is involved in the "196hp conversion" BTW?

I'm not one who really believes in doing mods just for the sake of mods. But thhis guy's car below has actually improved the appearance rather than making it ridiculous. If I ever have the time and money I'd mod my car to look like this:

You seem to fall out of your chair a lot. Either you are incredibly large, or you have mental issues and should go see a psychiatrist.

What's wrong with mudflaps? In places where we get a lot of snow, they definitely come in handy. Wow, I can't believe people in here are so insecure that they can't have mudflaps on their cars, even if it protects their own cars, and others on the roads. It helps with visibility for those behind you too, especially if you hit a puddle of mud, slush or whatever else. But practicality goes out the window with some people here. I wish some of the vehicles on the road today had mudflaps, since I got my windshield obscured 3 times today really badly because of it.

I gotta say, I agree with Greg and others who have said it's pointless to spend lots of cash on after market mods. How stupid does this sound:
"I've dropped $40,000 into my Jetta for racing mods"
"Oh yea, what did you get with that"?
"Well, I got another 5 HP out of it and added about 400 lbs to the gross weight. Serious performance dude!"
What am I missing here? If you're going to spend that kind of cash, get a $65,000 car to begin with. Even the stock $65K will outperform the $25K Jetta with $40K mods. And at least you can spread out the $65K car payments. Also, there is a very limited market for cars that have had the hell mod'd out of them.
Just buy the damn Corvette.

Eh? Who spends 40k to get 5 horsepower?

There are people who spend thousands on aesthetics, whether domestic or import. That's what the custom car scene is all about, but granted, not everyone is into that sort of thing, which is understandable. And taste, for that matter, is very subjective.

But if you can spend 40k on a Jetta to upgrade it's performance, that's a whole different cup of soup entirely. With 40k on a Jetta, I can easily make a 10 second drag car (or better), or so saloon racing. But very very few people would even consider that to be an attractive proposition.

A partner here grapped a new 2002 540i six speed for a reasonable deal (no one wants and manual five series in the US).

With about $8K in AC Schnitzer mods to engine and suspension (and some decent wheels) he has about 85% of the performance of an M5 for about 25% less.

In cases like that, after market mods can be justified.

And thankfully, no mudflaps!

Come again? 1. I never said anything about mudflaps being wrong. I just laughed at the fact that they look idiotic on performance tuned cars. If that was an Explorer I wouldnt laugh at mudflaps but thats a bloody tuned Golf.

Have any of you heard of the HPA Motorsports R32 ????
550 hp!
Before you talk do your research, this car will burn an M5 and costs less, also it will do over 200mph (Top speed 202 mph) and its gets to 60mph in 3.2 seconds with a 1/4 mile time of 11.4 seconds
All while having the security of AWD.
Oh, and its stops like a mother
60mph-0..107.7 ft
100mph-0..302ft
For comparison a GT2 Porsche stops from 60 in 107ft.
Cost: 60 Grand
What 3.2sec-0-60 run & 11.4 ¼ at 121 looks like

Many cars can outperform an M5....but not many that my clients won't laught at when I pull up......your suggestion included. The R32 is a riced out Golf with an overblown engine.

It is not a serious car...it's a boutique racer for the Fast and Furious crowd.

The R32 minus the stickers is definitely not rice
You do have a point with the client transportation tho, Not many of them would appreciate the R32, although I hear it has a good ride considering the suspension. Smile/happy/getting dizzy
"It is not a serious car"
What than constitutes a “Serious car”?
550 Hp and performance such as the R32 is capable of is definitely a serious car in my book, it my not be your cup of tea, but its one hell of a vehicle.

You can throw a large engine and large tires and brakes on any car (have you seent that crappy Dodge Neon SRT-XFFAKERQRQWERQ?).

It doesn't make it a true performance car. Performance cars are those are built from the ground up with handling and performance as a integral component.

Bolt-ons, dealer and factory mods on econoboxes are a joke. And in most cases (every case)....look every bit the part.

Greg, you have some credibility when you say that. However, if the cars can produce the required numbers, then they are performance cars. The R32 is a very capable car, although it might lack some of the engineering of some other cars in the same price range. Its suspension may not be top-notch, but the 3.2 VR6 is a very capable engine, it includes 4Motion AWD, and other goodies from the factory.

I disagree.....there are plenty of cars that 'produce the numbers' but are almost undriveable because they handle so poorly. Go back to any of the US 'muscle cars' of the sixties and seventies (great numbers..but only in a straight line).

Statistics do not give the experience...only the results.

In Austria - every second car is a Golf ! From 17 Year olds to 110 year old everybody drives the GOLF. In my opinion, it's the most boring car on this planet.
When I joined A.net it was still free, haha ;).

"handle so poorly"

HPA Motorsports R32;
600-ft slalom, mph 70.9
200-ft skidpad, lateral g 0.881

Ferrari Enzo ($652,000 US!!, considered to be one of the best handling cars ever built)
600-ft slalom, mph 72.0 (est)
200-ft skidpad, lateral g 1.02 (est)

Its with in 1.1 mph of the Ferrari Enzo on the slalom, The handling capabilities of the R32 are very very good.

Dude, the R32 is a sweet looking car but trying to validate it to somone like Greg is like talking to a brick wall. Totally useless.
