My Venting On The Media

Fri Feb 13, 2004 1:09 pm

This is me venting a little steam after a tough day..

It has occurred to me that the media today has inflicted so much panic and terror upon the people, unjustifyingly, that now when a taxi cab honks it's horn, people turn heads to make sure it's not a bomb, and when an airplane flies low over a house, people look up in panic waiting for 9/11 number two to happen.

The media is predicting the next attack daily- "new information sources have shown that..." or "a new report..." and I'm quite frankly sick of it. It's hard to believe all these scientific theories that we are somehow "all related" when we are seemingly so different. Perhaps on the surface.

I do not know what made the media go bad, but it almost shames me to be a part of a Journalism class. There is a line that has been crossed many times, the line between reporting news and profiting off of scaring the crap out of already nervous people. Who does the media think they are? And how dare they come and inflict pain, fear and uncertainty into a place where uncertainty seems to be the prime aura of every household.

What kind of a world do we live in where we cannot walk down the sidewalk without fearing a car bomb, or we cannot see the world as tourists because we could get shot by extremists. Why does the media feel the need to promote this? Money really is a sickening thing in this respect.

This really is just me venting, but it seems that in a time when panic is a daily routine, the media should be doing its best to report the news and not inflate the worrysome minds of people whose imaginations are ready to spring into action at any point... I wish I could let it fall off my shoulders, but somehow I have been "bitten" by that bug of belief- the walking down the sidewalk nervous.

Maybe a part of life is to be nervous, or uncertain at times... but who is the media to profit from it?

Thanks for listening..

JBLUA320, the reason the media is in the way it is today is because horrible news=more ratings. If for say every thing was okay and perfect, who would watch something that makes everyone feel safe? When horrible stuff is predicted or happens, where do people go to? The Media. I agree with you that is unfortunate and I too sometimes is pissed off, but I don't think we can do anything about it. Remember, it's human nature to know about bad stuff instead of the good stuff.

JBLU: I get your point but I think you're being a little overdramatic by saying that the media have inflicted pain and terror. I'm sorry that you feel afraid walking down the street because of news media. Just don't underestimate the American audience and readership in all of this: to some degree, the sensationalization of news is defined by public interest.

The news media are not making up these "intelligence" reports about terrorist threats. They are only reporting what's said by our friends, Ridge, Rumsfeld, et al. Don't cut off the head of the messenger.
