Best Kazaa/Limewire Alternative

Fri Feb 20, 2004 12:34 pm

Kazaa and Limewire both have way too much spyware for me, and my computer always seems to get screwed up after I use either one for a certain amount of time. So, what's the best alternative to these programs? Preferably the one with the least spyware/parasites/etc. I know iTunes is good...but .99 per song gets to be way too expensive for the amount of music that I download. Thanks for any info.

Well you have the option of spending .99 cents a song and overall paying $400 for your music...legally. Or, you can download them for free and run the risk of the RIAA tracking you and suing you for $12,000 or so.

I know it sucks, but if you think about it, .99 cents a song is a small price to pay to keep the RIAA off your doorstep...

Kazaa has a 1 time charge of $30.00 I believe, and you get it without the Spyware...

I use WinMX. While they can get info from IP addresses, when you sign up with WinMX they ask for no personal information.

Forget "companies charging $20 for a CD."
Forget "trying to find obscure artists."
Forget "auditioning a new song."

Those three excuses are bullshit, plain and simple. You know it. I know it.

Will somebody please just tell me why you feel like you have a God-ordained right to steal?

It doesn't matter if a $20 CD is "one hit" and "12 songs of filler". That's irrelevant.

The record companies set the price you pay. Not you. If you want something, you should pay whatever is being charged. How is it any different than this scenario?:

You are dying for a 12 ounce Filet Mignon from Claim Jumper. It HAS to be a Claim Jumper filet. Not a Sizzler, Salt Grass, or Stuart Andersons. You look at the menu and decide that $24.99 is too much. So you sneak into the kitchen and help yourself to one. Then, as you are being carted off to jail, you claim that YOU are the victim because 1) clearly Claim Jumper was charging too much and 2) you "only" wanted the steak, and not the bread, salad, rice, or the potato.

You would get laughed out of court.

yet anyone attempting to steal music is doing the exact same thing.

I so cannot wait to see the day when some sullen, thinks-he-knows-it-all 15 year old gets slammed into prison.

And trust me. Once ASCAP and Co. have all of their ducks in a row, they WILL find a sacrificial kid to show to the rest of the world.

See, here is the problem with the RIAA witch hunt:

They want to keep saturating the music market in the US with crap: American Idol, Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Britney Spears, and so on. I am sick and tired of hearing crap and I will not spend my hard earned money on crap. I download music either RIAA/ASCAP does not release in this country or independant DJs remixes. If I could buy CDs by Caater, Poe, or Conjure 1, I would. I paid full price for 3 CDs by Kristine W and have paid/will pay full price for Joe Satriani. I am also looking at Audioslave. That I don't mind. When this country is truly free with it's music, I will stop downloading. Until then, not bloody likely.

I agree with you except for the one Outstanding Flaw this argument has:

If you didn't LIKE it, then you wouldn't be downloading it.

If this "crap", being the bread and butter of the music industry wasn't being ripped off, then there would be no reason for them to be upset about it.

Same here Cba, I am using Mac OS Panther running the newest version of Limewire and I have not noticed any spyware, Limewire claims to have none. Both the basic and pro versions.

you will get best speeds with bittorrent usually.
shadows torrent client (search for it on google) is best to use or the azureus opensource java client.
torrents can be obtained from sites like suprnova.

and in regard to classic p2p concepts, dc++ is very nice, emule is great, and kazaa lite(only that one) is decent too

Douglas DC-9, having a Mac eliminates almost any risk of getting spyware or a virus, as most of the stuff is designed to run on Windows machines. Yet another reason why my next computer will be a Mac.

why not get a PC with your favourite linux distribution.
you can actually get 3 pcs as good as the one mac for the same money.

I have always felt that the music industry should cut the prices on CD's kind of like the movie industry has cut the prices on DVD's. Popular movies are always on sale for about $10-12 at various stores including Best Buy, Circuit City, and Target. Personally I have no problem paying $10 for what I feel is a good movie. CD's thought reallly havent come down in price, and thats partially why I refuse to purchase them. The other reason is just the ease of flipping throught mp3's while I am doing stuff on the computer, instead of putting cd's in and out. Also it makes me sick anytime I see "The fabulous life of ..." on VH1 and basiaclly for about half an hour they proceed to show off how much money some of these talentless individuals have.

They get most of their money from concerts. Artists make VERY little money on cd's.
