The Only Decent Browser

Sun Feb 22, 2004 10:12 pm

I recently turned my back on Microsoft Internet Explorer, installing and setting up Mozilla Firefox as my default browser.

Benefits: no more pop-ups and with the help of the Mozilla Adblock plugin, I am released of ad-banners, pestering ad-iframes and flash-animations now, on any site I visit.

So surfing the net becomes a bit more comfortable, secure, and less annoying. Anyone else here being a fan of Firefox?

Regards
Mike

I'm using it right now.. for some reason it REALLY lags my system up..
I even look in the Win XP Task manager and its only using 24,448K.
Oh well, it running fine now... Otherwise yes, its a good browser but I'm having problems with the cookies and staying logged in as a First Class Member.

Yeah, before making such a quick decision about IE why dont you look at all of your options? All you have to do is download the google toolbar, and it has a popup blocker.

Another very very good perk of Mozilla : you middle-button click on a link, and the link is opened on a second tab - not a second window, and just that makes me use that browser - perfect for forum browsing.

Yep the tabs rule, plus it is not subject to all the security holes and flaws of IE.

i use firefox aswell.
i also strongly suggest the use of the extensions "things they left out", "tabbrowser extensions" and "mouse gestures".
as good and usable as opera with more speed, cant beat that.

I run Mozilla Firebird 0.7 and like the others, my favourite thing about it is the whole tabs system. As others have mentioned, it's nice not to not worry about the security issues of running Microsoft IE. My only problem with Mozilla is that sometimes Java doesn't really work, but that's a minor inconvenience.

I also use Mozilla Thunderbird for email and that's where the good security really comes into play, as opposed to Outlook Express. Just thinking about it makes me shudder.

yeah, if you don't mind having it crash on you every ten minutes.
Heck, I don't know if I love Firefox as much as I loathe Thunderbird.. (we have to use both at work...)

The only problems I have with Thunderbird is when my mail server is acting up. And that's not a Tbird problem. I've been using Tbird since version 0.2, it's currently at 0.5. Mac OS X.

right now i'm using avant. it's nice except it blocks the anet first class sign up window too. so yea, another nice featre is that when you open multiple windows it stays within one browser window, kind of like opening multiple pictures in photoshop. it also remembers web pages, in case you inadvertantly close it.

Firefox is the best Windows platform browser available.

Safari is the best Macintosh platform browser available, although you Mac OS 9 folks should get Firefox as well.

Cancidas,

Firefox lets you specify sites to exclude from popup blocking.

Gigneil,

Personally I like Firefox more than Safari on OS X, but both are better than IE. Do you know of anyone who has released an OS 9 build of Firefox? Mozilla only provides binaries for OS X, Windows, and Linux, and there are some others that are contributed, but I don't see OS 9 as a contributed build. I haven't seen OS 9 supported by Mozilla in a while; I think the last version of Netscape that supported OS 9 was a 7.0.x version; 7.1 doesn't.

On OS 9 I find IE 5 is pretty good, and Netscape 7.0 is usable, but OS 9 is pretty much ignored these days in browser development.

One other thing I like about Mozilla Browsers is that you can adjust them to your needs down to the details. In the end it's like "this is MY OWN personal browser now". And there are a lot of things that are not possible with the Internet Explorer, like having three different start pages in on window... if you need that.
I still have IE on my computer, but I only use it to download Windows service packs and patches.

I also use Mozilla Thunderbird as my email application, I did not have any problems with it so far. I like its integrated junkmail controls.
