Questions About Multi-Vitamins

Mon Feb 23, 2004 10:48 am

Hey all,

I was thinking about starting to take a multi-vitamin once a day. I was thinking of purchasing something like Centrum. Which is the best brand of multi-vitamin? Also, I heard that vitamin build ups can cause kidney stones. Am I at more risk of getting kidney stones if I take a multi-vitamin daily? Do these multi-vitamins actually work and give you your daily dose of vitamins or is it a rip off and the companies are just trying to get there money? Any advice would be appreciated. Maybe AA61Heavy could help me out with this one. He's into working out/excerise/vitamin stuff.

Since your daily/regular diet can vary and most people are not nutrionists, it's always a good idea to take a daily MV to ensure you are not difficient in any mineral or vitamin. I would say that the increased risk (if any) of kidney stones is worth the vitamin/mineral coverage.

I also take vitamin D supplements in the winter since we get limited sun in Canada in the winter months.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Everyone needs to take a MV, the brands don't matter much at all compare the back of the bottles they are all the same. I take Meijer brand mv's. 10$ for 100 tabs. 1 tab daily, GNC 19.00$ 100 tabs 2 daily...

Always take them, you would be amazed at what you're actually lacking. Take it with food. You maye feel a slight enegry increase, but you won't notice a huge difference taking them, but your body will.

So basically: Take them!! Any kind is good. Especially if it has folic acid

That stuff is mostly useless and expensive.

Eat healthy and keep variation and you won´t have a problem anyway. Vitamin deficiencies won´t arise in the first place if you´re not predominantly eating junk food.

Most multi vitamin products are at best useless, at worst dangerous.

As a college student living on junk food and no sleep, I make sure to keep a ready supply of multi-vitamins. Currently I use One-A-Day Essential.

Sleep and proper eating might be a much simpler and cheaper solution...  Wink/being sarcastic

There is no humanly way anyone could get all the vitamins in a multivitamin. No one can eat that much. I will pull up some proof of that.

Don't forget you need more than just a little vitamin c or whatever, you need 100% vitamin c

I wonder how humanity could ever have survived without the vitamin industryBig grin

When you´re eating halfway sensibly, all the vitamins you need are contained in your food. It´s not halfway as critical as the sales people are trying to tell you. I wonder why they do...  Insane

Don´t panic, just eat healthy.

You have to eat a ton of food to get all your vitamins. It would be an unhealthy amount of food.

I am willing to bet all the money in my bank account that you are not getting your daily intake of all vitamins...

You aren't serious on this, are you?
If you want more vitamins then eat more fruit. Those isolated vitamins don't really keep you healthy anyway.

There are many vitamins in fruit, no question about that, but they don't supply nearly all of the vitamins you need. No folic acid in fruit, no iron etc...

And like I said before, you are getting bits and peices of vitamins, not all your daily needs. With a multi you get a concentrated amount.

Eat some salad.

Really those MV drops may be good for heavy smokers and people on a very strict diet but certainly not for the average consumer.

Ask your Doc or do a little resarch on the net.

Whether or not vitamins work, I go by this: my understanding is that, on average (everyone is different), the body only absorbs about 30% of the actual vitamins and minerals in a single tablet, however, if you look at the percentage of daily value, some of them are injected with up to 500% of your DV.. therefore you are still getting "at least" 150% (you kinda understand why they have so much DV in them).. even for minerals (usually are lower in dosage) that aren't that high in DV, you can obtain them through your eating habits, often equalizing at 100%.
