UK Members: Do You Wear Glasses?

Tue Feb 24, 2004 8:47 am

Do you wear glasses? I, for instance, wear both contacts and glasses (not at the same time, of course, for that would be silly).

If you wear just glasses or, like me, both glasses and contacts, do you have difficulty when going into opticians and selecting potential new glasses? I do: I select them, try them on, go up to the mirror and, low and beyond, have to look so close that I get an inaccurate, distorted view and thus an ill-formed opinion. If I am with friends or relatives and ask them for their opinions, they will tell me – but I cannot accurately see whether or not they look any good, because my eyesight is pretty poor. Consequently, I have, in the past, been a little disappointed when my selected glasses were ready for collection: I tried them on, I looked in the mirror (when I could actually see through them), the opticians fiddled around with them – but I was not always sure I chose the best pair. In short, how can you always accurately select a pair of glasses when your eyesight is pretty poor or worse? It can be very difficult indeed – and a waste of money or a disappointment or both.

Anyway, back to the sex topic.  Laugh out loud

Being short-sighted i wear glasses, i first got a pair of freebie, plastic NHS glasses in 1995. One look at them and thought, "no way i'm wearing these to school". I damaged my eyesight further by not wearing glasses when i should have been.

AvianceGirl, try contact lenses. Until a few years ago I also refused to wear glasses, than I wanted to do a LASIK operation but my eye specialist was not sure if it is possible because I am very short sighted, she recommended me to wear contact lenses until she consulted her colleagues to ask if a LASIK operation is possible for me, I accepted her advice and when she called me two weeks later I refused the operation with the laser because I was (and I am still) very satisfied with my contact lenses  Big thumbs up.

"Rhaa, why only UK members ?"

Because in America, for example, opticians are called chemists, which are probably not as specialised as in the UK. But still, feel free to answer.

This is gonna sound daft but i wear glasses sometimes when i want to look intelligent - even though i dont need them. Ive got a set of frames that i wear (only with my suit - and even then only for business meetings etc) but normally, - no i dont wear them.

I'm a sunglasses nutter though - i am addicted to them. Ive got a pair of Oakely Juliet Titaniums lined up for this summer!

Because in America, for example, opticians are called chemists

Umm, no they're not...where'd you hear that? We buy glasses from "opticians" too! In fact, we don't use the word "chemist" at all, except in the context of someone (usually in a white coat) working in a chemistry laboratory (which we pronounce "LAB-ra-tor-y", by the way).  Smile What you call chemists, we call pharmacists, and their stores--which we call pharmacies or drugstores--generally don't sell prescription glasses.

Anyhoo, I do have glasses but only wear them to meetings, at the movies, etc. So, my eyes aren't bad enough that I have any trouble picking out new frames. But here's a suggestion: why don't you bring a Polaroid or digital camera, have someone take a picture of you trying on the potential new frames, and then look at the picture with your glasses or contacts on? Sure, it's a bit inconvenient, but if glasses are as expensive in the UK as they are over here, then it's probably worth it!

Hmm...interesting. Maybe a regional thing? I've never heard anyone use "chemist" in that context here in the States, but then again it's a big country with lots of people who use different words for the same thing. Like "subs," "hoagies," "heroes," and "grinders," which all describe a kind of sandwich.  Smile

But here in NY at least, I buy glasses from optical shops, which generally have an optician on staff and don't sell anything besides glasses.

Um, i wear Oakley's!!!

Both my parents have glasses so i figure it's inevitable i'll have to have em tho! I'll go with contacts tho i think! More my style, glasses dont look good on me!!!

AvianceGirl, you should try glasses, personnaly i think girls with glasses are the best looking!!! Especially the ones with very thin black rims that are very rectanguler shaped and quite low profile!!!

Optical shops? It's weird - Americans tend to say very literal things, like 'eye glasses' instead of just 'glasses' (correct me if I'm wrong).

He's from Kansas City, though previously a Brit. He's actually a co-founder and director of a large American diesel engine distribution firm, and previously the marketing director of Lister and Petter (however it's spelt) - a multinational diesel distribution firm.

Of course it's biased. Everything in life is biased, to varying degrees. I wanted to know whether people in the UK had a particular problem when it came to choosing glasses or an idea I had, so I wasn't interested in hearing about when Americans, Australians or anyone else get them.

We say both "glasses" and "eyeglasses" interchangeably, but definitely more often just "glasses." I would probably say "eyeglasses" only to distinguish from, say, sunglasses.

As for your uncle, although I personally haven't heard "chemist" being used that way in the States, I don't doubt him or his underlying point--it's quite possible that, in the Midwest (such as Kansas City), there are large drugstores that also sell glasses. Here in NY, the "one-stop shopping" phenomenon (K-Mart, Wal-Mart, etc.) hasn't caught on to the extent that it has in other parts of the country. So, we are much more likely to go to smaller, more specialized stores.

I wore glasses for about 7 years, then I went to contact lenses and refused to wear glassess. Then, last year, I got laser eye treatment and it was one of the best things I have ever done. for the first week after the operation, it was a bit painful, but then after that, after watching TV in bed, I kept getting up to take my contacts out then nearly poking my eye out, forgetting I didn't have them in.

I wear glasses on earlies and contact lenses on lates, I only really need them for driving but when I'm at work I'm in and out of cars all day long so keep them on all the time, also helps me read the a/c reg's from further away too so I'm sure I'm at the correct a/c without having to drive right upto it !!!.

Can't be ar$ed faffing around with my contacts at 5am and there is also a chance I might take a nap at work on earlies and I can't do that with lenses in, well not as easily anyway !!!.

I never even knew I needed glasses until I happened to go with my friend when he was collecting his contact lenses for the first time. He had the lenses in whilst driving home and I was wearing his glasses, and I was like WOW I can read that from hear and I can see this and that etc etc... and He was like - WHAT you can't even see that and you drive like a crazy b'stard and you can't even SEE !!!!.

A couple of days later I went for an eye test and found I was slightly short sighted. I'm not that bad though.... -0.75 in my right eye and -1.25 in my left so it's not like I cannot see, I'm just below the legal limit for driving and can't read roadsigns as far in advance, but I can still drive without them when I have to although it does feel wierd now.

I was going to have LASIK but thought I'd try the contacts first - bloody awful experiance until you get used to it, but once you are used to stiking your finger in your eye then it's a doddle !!. Oh and Aviancegirluk, you don't actually touch your eye - well not once you can do it properly anyway.

I started wearing glasses when I was about 14, but these days wear contact lenses almost all of the time. When I've bought a new pair of glasses (every few years) I can never seem to find any frames which look right on my face. Its so frustrating as other people could wear the same type of frames and look fine in them!

Unfortunatley I really have to wear lenses or glasses as my eyesight is WAY bad! It hasn't got any worse since I was about 18 but currently my right eye is -4.75 and my left eye -6.5!!!!! Fortunatley, my eyesight is perfect when I put my lenses in!

I realise that by joining in this discussion I have left that scoundrel Pe@rson an open invitation to make one of his digs linking this to my age!!!

Thats incorrect. Even if it was.. the question has nothing to do with the UK, or UK opticians.

My eyesight was -3.75 for both eyes and thought I was really bad. I has the LASEK treatment which was £495 per eye and found it fine. I was driving again within a week. I looked a right berk coming out of the clinic in the middle of Newcastle on a busy Saturday afternoon with two massive white patches over my eyes being guided to the car by my mate. I took sleeping tablets for about two days cos I couldn't open my eyes properly and the natural light was too bright, but I can say it was worth every penny and don't regret it. When you think about it, it really pays for itself, think of the price of your contact and glasses. It pays for itself within 10 years.

If you bothered to spend 30 seconds reading my opening and later posts, you'd realise that there was a reason why this thread was for only UK-based members.

Well, I've read all your posts numerous times, and the only thing I can see that hints at a reason why the thread was restricted to UK-based members only was "Because in America, for example, opticians are called chemists, which are probably not as specialised as in the UK. But still, feel free to answer.'

Which, as stated before, is incorrect. I have never heard anyone here call an optician a "chemist". The opticians here are just as specialized here as they are there. Unless a small amount of people calling opticians "chemists" is enough to disqualify any of our remarks on whether we wear glasses or not, I think we are more than able to answer your question.

I, personally, do wear glasses. I've worn them for the past 5 or 6 years. Before that, I had perfect vision, somthing I was very proud of. But then I became active on the internet, and it all went downhill  Smile

Why dont I wear contacts? I like to wake up in the morning, put on my glasses, put on my clothes, and be out the door within about 10 minutes. Contacts seem to be more hassle than I need right now. Glasses are just easier to deal with on my schedule. But maybe that will change later.

Wow, that took long to find. If I asked American counterparts, I'd have affected the results because they're not the target audience.
