PC Problems.. Help Please

Sun Mar 07, 2004 1:34 am

Last week I was playing Flight Simulator when my PC started randomly rebooting. It kept rebooting and then got to the point where it won't boot at all. The BIOS won't POST so I can't figure out the error codes.

I replaced the two cheapest things that could be the problem: memory and power supply. Video card works.

Now I'm down to the motherboard and CPU.

I was running PCProbe software and the CPU and motherboard were not overheating. Voltages seemed a little low which is why I thought it was a power supply.

I'm stuck. Should I replace the mobo or CPU ($88 vs $188) first? Any ways to test or figure out which one is bad?

well, just what you are telling me, it could be either the Mobo or CPU. There could be a faulty link that has developed between the CPU and the Mobo, or there could be any of a number of things wrong with the Mobo.. Honestly, there are testers for them out there, I just don't know where..

The day before valentines day, I shut down my comp for the night like I normally do. Except, when I woke up and turned it on, it was 100% dead.. Not only was there no POST, there were no beep codes or anything. I never figured out what the problem was, but I am pretty sure it was the motherboard. I ended up blowing a load of money to buy new parts (as I was due for an upgrade anyway) and couldn't wait as I had a report due that in college and I couldn't access it otherwise. I had to re-do the report as well..

If I had to guess for you, motherboard first.

If you have any more ?'s feel free to email me.

I have an Athlon board that just started doing that to me too...turns out on further inspection that some of the capacitors on the board blew. I can't be bothered to replace because I don't have the specs them so the board is garbage (out of warranty).

But I find that usually the random rebooting problems are caused by bad memory.

Hmm, looks like I'll order a new motherboard. I just pray I don't need a CPU. The CPU fan works, it never overheated, and the chip is less than a year old (probably under warranty if it has one, but no way to prove it's dead).

I thought it could be the memory, but the new stick I bought didn't help.

Don´t know if it would explain the BIOS not coming up on a WIntel PC, but I´d check the backup battery, just to be sure. I´ve had people close to throwing away their PCs just for a dead battery... (Not that I´d disagree with any kind of abuse done to an WIntel PC.  Wink/being sarcastic)
