"buy One Get Free" Crap

Thu Mar 11, 2004 11:05 am

Everyone has to have seen those commericals on tv where they sell the baseline product @ 29.99 and then they tell you that if you call in the next 10 minutes, you will get a second or a third or a whole 'notha set-o-shit, valued at 60 bucks, free.

Question: All of that crap is just worth 29.99 in the end huh? All that buy one get one free stuff on "tv ads" is just a something to get you to 'call right now, today, to get this exclusive offer not sold in stores'?

Well, I just bought a 1:25 die-cast model of Matt Kenseth's #17 car, and I got a poster for the upcoming NASCAR Imax movie for free. I thought that was actually a good deal.

Would you rather half price.

The buy one get one free means that the stuff is overpriced anyway, and they get to sell twice as much of the crap as they would if you only brought one at the real price. Most of the cost would be in distribution and not in the stuff itself.
Making you buy twice as much of the stuff means that if you get to the second bottle you might then be hooked on it, or you might give away the 2nd bottle and then the the marketers may capture twice the audience.

Having worked for the company that handles the orders for 95% of that shit, yes $29.95 is all most of it is worth. But don't forget those shipping and handling costs they never tell you specifics on are typically a lot more than you would expect, like almost as much as the product. Also while you are on the phone placing the order, don't do it if you are in a hurry because there are going to be 10 or 20 additional things the operator is required to ask you if you wanna buy, for an additional charge of course.

Don't rush to call in either, EVERYONE is in the first 500 callers or within 10 minutes, that is just a line they use to get people to call in before the dimwits forget. Having been the operator I can tell you most people that call to order that shit are truly the dumbest people walking the earth. They do not know their own zip code, or phone number. They are calling to buy something which costs money and they do not have the presence of mind to have a credit card anywhere near them. The thing that amazed me most though is close to half the people who would call in did not even know THE NAME of the product they were buying. Then they would get mad at us for not being able to read their mind or even know what the product looked like, the company handled between 8000 and 10000 different products when I worked there and any number they called in on could order any of those products.

so if you do insist on ordering this crap here are some tips:
-Don't be in a rush, expect the call to take 15 minutes
-Know where you live and your phone number, expect future mailings and telemarketing calls
-It's gonna take a month to get it, unless you wanna pay A LOT more for rush delivery.
-Have your friggin credit card ready, or ask IMMEDIATLY for the check address
-Know what it is you are calling for
-There is a 1 in 3 shot you will get an office in Mumbai India, if the operator can't speak fucking english call them dirty names, hang up, try again. Feel free to voice your concern to the American operator you may get next, they hate the Indians as much as you will. All calls are recorded and if the big bosses hear enough bitching about the Indians not being able to communicate they will take the hint.
-It is going to be more than you think, be prepared
-If it sounds too good to be true, it is
-When you get your product and it sucks, the number you ordered it on can't help you. Look for a customer service number or the ordering service can give you that number. Do not chew the operators ass for handing you off to someone else who is probably only open 9-5 M-F, this is the best they can do for you.

edited to include:
They say it's not availible in stores, give it 6mos then check out Big Lots or another store that is sort of a 7 day a week flea market

get to sell twice as much of the crap as they would if you only brought one

BNE,
You've very eloquently hit on the one and only motivation for any retailer that knows their thumb from their nose- "Buy one get x free" is not about a sale at all, building brand loyalty, etc. It is the retailer way of saying "This junk never sold, so we have to clear it off the shelves." So, instead of selling one at half off, and hoping you'll buy the second, third, etc., they are going to make you take as many as they think you'll tolerate.
