Should We Use The Euro In The US?

Fri Apr 02, 2004 6:31 am

Since everything Euro is great and everything American sucks maybe we should use the Euro instead of the dollar?

That woudnt work. Im no economist, but i think that its advantageous to have both so they can "balance" each other. Its like saying that the whole world should use the same currency. It just wouldnt work.

But back to your facetious-flame bait....

No, you shouldn't. That would make travelling there way too expensive.  Laugh out loud

You´re welcome to see the light, of course.  Wink/being sarcastic

I´d just like to mention that the key to a successful monster thread is he ability to not take things too personal... The brits (and even the scots!) have generally turned out to be obnoxious, but still good sports. The germans are evil anyway but don´t even try to dispute the fact. The french have mostly kept their shocked or disgusted distance...

Can the americans fit in there? Does this thread have a chance? Will it die from an acute lack of humour? Well, let the games begin!  Big thumbs up

I could be completely off, but if the Euro continues to gain strength could it not pose as competition to the USD? ... which would be good, not having one dominant currency and all?

Uuuhhh... Why do I sense a trap in this deal?
You´d need to saddle it with a juicy compensation package in order to make it halfway attractive! Big grin

Yup, is already happening... I don´t think it really matters all that much who´s on top in this competition (similarly to A vs. B), but the competition in itself is a healthy thing.

Well, you wouldn't get Bush as a leader, rather just someone to deal with as you please, which should provide some quality entertainment!

I don't want anyone to have a heart attack....

First I found myself agreeing with Superfly the other day and then the April 1st posts....

Per Russophile:

"But what pisses me off, is when right-wing fundamentalists, such as yourself (MD-90) and North County, continually have a go at the USSR for this genocide,

Since I am being called a "right-wing fundamentalists" I didn't want to freak out to many people with this thread. (Can a Member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Laterday Saints be a fundamentalist?)

The used to call us Morman's: communists - No Joke!

I'm surprised to hear the Germans defend the Euro.

Your strong economy was almost certainly diluted by the weaker economies of the smaller EU nations.

And then there are those who claim that the €uro is merely the old german Mark in new packaging. I guess when the criticism is going both ways, it can´t be all bad.  Wink/being sarcastic

Germany had been paying into the union all along, regardless of the currency situation. And mostly it has turned out to be a good investment, developing markets and stabilizing the economic environment.

No, I think it was the right move, even if it hurt a bit.

Sure if we wanted the purchasing power of our national currency to be influenced by Italian and Greece fiscal policies. Furthermore, we'd have to get rid of the fed and allow the ECB to set monetary policy.

Sounds like a great idea.

The US Reserve bank, or any other major country's bank who has major currency stocks in US dollars wouldn't allow the US dollar to collapse into nothingness.

The strength of the US economy is very much tied to the fact that most countries around the world use US dollars in either their Reserve Banks or for government expenditure. This prevents the huge economic deficit the US has from destroying investor confidence and making the US another Argentina. I doubt those countries would want their hard earned money to depleat?

Unless Reserve Banks worldwide decide to abandon the US dollar completely in favour of the Euro (or some other currency) the US dollar will enjoy a reasonable life of highs, slight lows - but mainly highs.

Reserve banks are already beginning to shift from the Dollar towards the €uro... I agree that nobody will want to see the Dollar fall through the floor; But the exceptional status the Dollar had enjoyed in the past is in decline. Wouldn´t be surprised to see one or two asian currencies of similar weight join the club in the medium to long run.
