Official Airliners.net UK Meet - The Report!

Mon Apr 05, 2004 4:36 am

Hopefully by now we are all back at home, dry and warm. So did we all enjoy it?

In place of a full blow by blow trip report, I present, from my point of view... The highlights:

I arrived to meet everyone at about 1930 on Saturday at the Renaissance. Within half an hour everyone had assembled in the reception lounge area where we introduced ourselves, called Singapore_Air (yes, ladies and gentlemen, he is just like that in 'real life' too but I'll let someone else tell that story). We then caught the airport bus around to the other side of LHR to The Green Man pub.

2030, The Green Man: Much cursing happening because apparently or booking has been cancelled and the kitchen staff sent home. No food available. We all sit down and get a round of drinks. Someone has a brilliant idea to order pizzas and stay in the pub (it is dry and warm, unlike outside). The bar staff say 'no' ... so another round of drinks comes and we start considering our options.

AvianceGirlUK arrives and after MYT332 has managed to stop staring, we hear the rumor that the dismembered Concorde G-BOAA will be crossing the road at 10pm. The plan is to see that and then head off somewhere else for dinner. The Elbonains are hungry! We drink some more, and then after we get outside to walk to the crossing, we're told Concorde has already crossed and it's now going to be 2am before it leaves LHR by road.

We wait for the bus back to the Renaissance where we 'indulge' in the fantastic choice and culinary delights, not to mention the bargain price, of the 'Renaissance Buffet'. Hey, at least it's food.

After dinner, the more 'hardcore' members of our group take a leisurely walk around to the A30 road near Hatton Cross. The convoy is assembling to take G-BOAA to Isleworth for loading onto the barge for it's trip to Scotland.

0100, cold and wet, we arrive at the place one hour early, to see Concorde leave. There are a few hundred spectators, media and staff, all ready to go.

Only pictures can describe how the aircraft looked as it came out of the maintenance area onto the road (pics to be online soon). Very sad indeed. The A30 was closed in both directions as it turned the corner out onto the road. Some of us got an interview with the BBC.. anyone got a link to the news videos?

0245, we head back to the hotel, say goodbye and I drive AviationFreak to LGW to catch his 0600 flight back to AMS. I arrived home at 0500 and slept until well after mid-day. Shamrock747 invited me to The Green Man for a ConcordeSST meeting which was interesting, but I didn't stay too long since I was so tired from being up all night.

How was it from your point of view? Please post your reports here! A link to the pictures will be posted as soon as I get them online.

It's a shame so many of you couldn't make it. Maybe next time....

Finally: Thanks, everyone. It was a fantastic weekend. Great to meet you all and I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did.

Cheers,
Ben

Well

I can say i was scared at first, meeting all these strange people i had been chatting to for so long in this place.

But as soon as people started coming, it was a fun enjoyable weekend

MYT pretending he was not drunk,
the Grenn Man (great pub)
RAIN (and i dont need to say any more on this)
Lots of walking
Great hotel room
Lots of good viewing areas

A BIG THANK YOU TO BEN

He really did take over when things went wrong (i will let somone else say what) and sorted it all out, 2 rounds of drinks, and it would have cost a lot, and evening giving aviationfreak a lift to LGW even though it was 45 min out of his way

Id like to say im glad i met u all, and it will be a weekend we will never forget for a long time (My coat, be it now 8:30pm is still dripping wet)

The ren is a great hotel to stay in, be it the food is a lot of money, but waking up at 9am with a 747 rolling past youjr window, waht more can u ask

Where does the time go???

I've just got home after two days at LHR! Here is my personal very long account of the weekend...

Spotting/photography during the day was good - big thanks to Leezyjet for driving us around the airfield, and to Tesco so MYT332 could buy 24 beers and 707cmf could get some cheesecake to take back to Elbonia.  Smile

The evening could have gone wrong because of issues with the dinner booking (yes, we need a friendly word Pe@rson!), but top geezer Ben stepped in and saved the day! We had a couple of rounds of drinks at The Green Man, then everyone (with a couple of exceptions!) headed back to the hotel for dinner. AvianceGirlUK dropped Jkw777 anda very drunk MYT332 at the hotel and then went home. I had some supersonic business to attend to with some friends from ConcordeSST.com in The Green Man.  Big grin

We all met again at around midnight by TBA - the old BA Concorde hangar where Concorde G-BOAA (with no wings or tail) was waiting on her truck. AvianceGirlUK and I were luckily able to get some seats in a warm car - four people in the back of a Focus was not too comfortable, but at least it was dry! Unfortunately everyone else got soaked. MYT332 had the bright idea of coming out into a downpour wearing only a shirt.  Nuts

At around 2am Concorde started moving. I was interviewed by the BBC and ended up on the BBC1 Breakfast News and BBC News 24 bulletins throughout the day! We followed Concorde for half an hour before starting to head back to the hotel. Most people were getting the bus back but poor GBOAF and AvianceGirlUK somehow ended up with me in my friend's car speeding across West London, trying to beat G-BOAA to the A4/A30 junction! Thankfully Concorde was traveling slightly slower than Mach 2 so we managed to beat it to the junction by the petrol station. A supersonic airliner crossing the road at 3am was a very interesting sight!

I got back to the hotel at 3.30am and had a good night's sleep until 9am. I woke up to a beautiful clear morning and a British Airways Boeing 747-436 taking off. Big grin After a nice big unhealthy breakfast at McDonald's, Trekster and I went down to Myrtle Avenue at the end of 27L to join the rest of the group. I stayed there until the afternoon when I went to a ConcordeSST.com meet at The Green Man. Ben popped in - unfortunately we discussing some rather boring admin stuff, but hopefully you weren't too bored there. I think you'll like the special edition BA News my mate Mark gave you! I left the pub at 9.30pm and I was home within an hour or so.

Hello again!

The meet was a huge success. Great fun! I can say I experienced the brotherhood of a.net.

I tried to be at Hatton X Saturday morning but I didn't make it because the Piccadilly line was out of service from Acton Town. I took the busservice to Hatton cross instead where I arrived at 10:15 am. Too late but I tried to find someone anyway. No one there so I catched the bus to renaissance where I arrived at 10:45 am. Way to early so I decided to walk along runway 27R-09L where I found a good advantage point to watch the action by myself.

When it was about time I walked back to the hotel where I met a view other a.nuts while a group was still spotting planes elsewhere.
After we introduced ourselves I walked with Leezyjet, Shamrock and Trekster to the visitors center to watch the action. Awesome place BTW. Here we met JKW777, Airplanepicks and MYT332. Later on we crossed the street to have a Mc Snack. From here we walked back to the visitors center from where Leezyjet took us (Trekster, Shamrock and me) for a ride in his car around the maintenance hangars where we found a spot to make some pictures. And yes his license plate with G-80AA is for real. After this we found the rest of the group (also the Elbonians and RJ100) at the threshold of 27R-09L. Unfortunately Leezyjet and Airplanepics left here but we met Lee by coincidence again at the Concorde transport.
We stayed a while here until it was about time to go back to the Renaissance.

Here we met UTA-ette the soon to be princess of Elbonia, and Ben.
From here Ben turned out to be a truly and natural leader.
A big thank you for Ben's efforts indeed!
So far my report. Nothing I can add to the above.

Thank you very, very much for the ride to LGW Ben. I owe you big time. Also for the drinks. I'll find a way to return the favor.
Glad you made it home. I had a view worries because you seemed to be suffering from sleepiness so much.
BTW you are one dedicated member. Posted a report so fast despite the fact you are still very tired.

I also really appreciate that AvianceGirl and Shamrock decided to join us while we awaited the transport of G-BOAA in the cold outside, giving up their warm and comfortable shelter in the car.

I was just chatting to Trekster. He informed me that there was no food at The Green Man, because the lady apparently telephoned me to confirm that food was still required but could not get hold of me. I was surprised to hear this, as I did not receive any messages or calls (my phone has been messing up recently). Besides, 707 or UTA or both took over the organisation of the event as I could not attend, so I assumed that they would have ensured
that everything was double-checked and so on. Sorry about that, but it's not really my fault.

I think im not the only one here in saying this, but we owe this guy a lot. Thankyou Ben, you were great.
Again, it was a real pleasure to have met you all and i will be at the MAN meet with bells on  Smile

I'm just off to bed and was going to write something in the morning... but so this doesn't go down hill, let me say a few words.

Pearson, it's really not a problem, not yours or anyone's fault, just the way things worked out. In the end, they worked out very well.

The only 2 things that are important are (1) that we all enjoyed ourselves, and (2) that you passed your exam. How did it go?

So now that's over, let's look forward to MAN! Who will be coming with me in my trusty TB-10?

The exam was fine thanks. Only three more to go and then I am off for a few months (spending them in sunny and over-touristy North Humberside).

Yeah, I am thoroughly looking forward to the MAN meet. I will definitely be attending - I have no exams (!) or anything else planned - and the weather should be lovely and warm. I have not yet fully planned it, but the weekend will probably be held on the 14th and 15th August and run thus:

1) Meet at 9-10am (or later if necessary) at the car park and proceed to the excellent spotting area near the runways. Spend the day there watching the movements, while sunning ourselves;

2) Go to the seemingly excellently-located pub in the early evening (perhaps around 6pm). Hopefully have a BBQ (G'day mate! Yeah, when you're 'out bush' and a bit crook for some fair dinkum tucker, grab a chook out the dunny bag, put it on the rock and fry. Bonza!) outside while watching the planes and drinking copious amounts of alcoholic beverages (or not so much);

3) Proceed to the hotel (perhaps SAS Rad. if we can secure a good bulk-buying discount). Pe@rson will be having sex with some fine lass (i.e. my fiancee), but enough about that;

4) Meet up for breakfast the next morning (perhaps 8 O'Clock - not sure yet) and then go back to the viewing area near the runways. Spend the day there (or part thereof, if necessary); and

5) Bid farewell and go our seperate ways, hopefully with smilies on our faces and memories in our hearts (God, that sounds sloppy).

I will fully organise it this time so there will be no problems but rather lots of laughs and bloody good times.

If I get someone to smile sweetly (like this ---> Big grin ) I am hoping that the A.nutter people will enable me to put an 'ad' on the front page and in other noticeable places, in order to generate more interest. I don't know if they will (they generally seem a bit, umm, 'conservative' and, umm, moody), but then it would not be happening but for being a part of this community.

 Smile

Hi chaps and chapesses.

I enjoyed my day too, was good to meet you all and not very often I get to see LHR from those vantage points so it made a bit of a change for me (although I did have to turn my face away each time a staff bus went past  Big grin ), have to try and get along to the MAN meet later in the year to see something a little differant, as I'm sure you can all appreciate that when you spend more time out on the apron at LHR than in your own house it does get a little tiresome seeing the same a/c and airlines day in day out.

Glad I was able to help out by taking you around the airport and to Tesco's, saved the legs thats for sure, just hope you didn't make too much noise back at the hotel after drinking all those beers.

Sorry I didn't get chance to speak to you all for longer when AA was leaving, but it really was a last minute thing as my evening out didn't quite go according to plan (much like yours really) so had to rush off once she had gone.

Shamrock747,

You should have pointed the BBC in my direction as I took my car along especially even though I'd drunk too much to drive so my GF had to drive it and she'd never been trusted to drive my car before !!!.

Anyway better go, still got to pack for my holidays in the morning. Got a nice Bmi A321 to fly on from LHR-PMI.

Good morning all from wet and rainy Switzerland (seems like I brought the British weather home Big grin ) !

Had a very pleasant flight back to Basle yesterday night. Only the captain seemed a bit confused as he announced: "Ladies and gentlemen we have just started our decent into Zur...eh ah Basle sorry, Zur..eh Basle is reporting clear sky and a temperature of 12C (altough it was raining as hell on approach...)  Big grin

Maybe a should write a trip report.

Thank you for the nice weekend I enjoyed it very much.

...just like myself and Elbonian princess UTAette, we are unimpressed and unamused of BD's 3-hour delay yesterday (Grrrr !)
We were however much impressed by Ben and much amused by Myt332 and 707cmf after they had drunk the whopping quantity of...1 pint of Foster's.
A trip report will follow  Smile/happy/getting dizzy after I am done with moving my desk (Moving day at Gateway today)

You lot were never at Myrtle 'early morning' - you arrived about 11!!! Myself and MikeC were there until 11, and left to check out of the hotel, returning to find a small group of you there, who we stayed with, through until Antoine and RJ100 had to leave for their flights! Great time, especially with the Elbonians, Justin, Alex (club class, upgraded by an e-ticket machine!!! how lucky is that!?!) and RJ100 back in the terminal.

Hope to see you all in MAN!

Woa woa woa woaaaaaaa!!!! I was not drunk!!!
I had 4 of them beers that we bought at Tescos with Leezjet and then I had 2 at the green man (1664 not fosters) half of UTAette's Guinness when she wasn't looking and then a few glasses of wine. I was just jolly! Don't forget I had been up for a lonnnnng time and hadn't eaten all day. I only got punched once, that aint bad.

I was at the visitors center at some point during the weekend and ok so bringing a jacket probably wasn't the best idea! Oh yea thanks Aviation freak for lending me your leather jacket, god send!

Thanks though to everyone and especially to Ben. See you all at MAN no doubt.

I'll post my video later on when i edit it. I posted picutres in the other post, didnt see this thread, and no its not cos im still drunk, hey, i never was!

Jeez, you people really need to learn how to drink properly.

Although it causes me great pain to admit it, I have to agree with GKirk.

I'm a bit concerned that during the MAN meet the only one's still relatively sober after the 6th pint will be myself and Gkirk (what with us being scotsmen, different breed o' man up here you see  Smile/happy/getting dizzy ), and maybe Ben as he's an aussie after all.

It shall be interesting none the less.

Regards,
Gordon.

Ben, can't believe the picture was rejected. I hope you have the others accepted.

Pe@rson, I'll be happy to attend in August. July would be nice too. But I've already plans for the weekend of July 17/18 .
And no one was mad at you. We were only joking. I haven't heard any negative comment which was meant for real.
Good to know your exams were fine. The result better be good since it was your reason for not attending.  Laugh out loud

Gordon, yes its troubling to read that some people were blitzed after their 5th drink at the London meet  Wow!
I was still standing normally after my 15th on Saturday night  Big grin And that was me taking it easy  Big thumbs up

Sounds like you guys had a good time although I don't envy you after seeing what the weather was like on Saturday evening.

I guess I saw some of you being interviewed on the BBC. It's a shame to see Concorde having her wings clipped (literally) in such a fashion.

Ben,

I can assure you that whatever GKirk says bears no affiliation to me - there's no way I'd still be standing after 15 pints on a saturday night!

I can drink 15 pints no problem if I start when the pub opens and break for a meal about half way - but in an average 5 hour saturday night session - NO WAY!

I suspect however that GKirk was probably drinking vodka, whisky or something similar with his claim of 15, most people can handle that.

Either way I normally call a halt after about 7 or 8 pints in an evening sesson, or at least take a break for a couple of hours, lest I feel nasty the next morning.

Regards,
Gordon.

To be fair, 5 of the 15 pints were shandies  Big grin Plus I had a 2 hour break in between.
To be fair, compared to some people I know, Im a pretty weak drinker, but they've got massive beer bellies though  Wow!
I dont really drink that much Vodka or Whisky, pints then usually Southern Comfort w/ lemonade, or bottles of Smirnoff Ice or that sort of stuff.
Ben, your on.  Big grin

After 15 pints, the problem resides not with the head but rather with the bladder Big grin
