Mega MAN Meet - Official Thread (part 1)

Tue Apr 06, 2004 2:27 am

This is the official thread for the Mega MAN Meet. Accordingly, please respond to this thread only with things concerning it, including confirming your attendance, confirming your participation in tours, any queries you may have, and so forth.

The Mega MAN Meet will be held over the weekend of 10th and 11th July. It is being held during this month because it should be nice and warm and thus more conducive to an outdoor get-together. It is being held on these dates so that people can still attend Fairford and Farnborough, if they wish to.

Please note that the planning is currently ongoing – I am awaiting replies from people and businesses – so I cannot yet confirm what will and what will not be happening. Nevertheless, the following is a plan which should come to fruition (I will obviously inform you of any changes).

1) Meet at 0930 (if not possible, please state your ETA in this thread) at the car park spectators' area (where there’s a good view of the movements) and proceed to the excellent visitors’ area (visit http://www.manchesterairport.co.uk/web.nsf/Content/ViewingPark) near the runways (by public bus). Spend the day there watching the movements, while sunning ourselves;

2) Hopefully have a tour sometime between noon and 1500 of the aircraft (hopefully including the Avro, the MON DC-10, and hopefully both the Trident and the Concorde) present in the visitors’ area. There will be an entrance fee to all of these, the cost of which I will let you know ASAP (as soon as I know; please note that these will have to be specially opened for us). If you do or do not wish to go inside the aircraft, please let me know.

2) Go to the seemingly excellently-located pub (The Airport Hotel; visit www.airporthotel.freeserve.co.uk) about 1700 (5pm). I am hoping to arrange an outdoor BBQ, so that we can continue watching the movements and take advantage of the evening sun and warmth. If you require vegetarian food, please let me know. If a BBQ is not possible, we shall hopefully have a sit-down meal indoors, before and after which we can watch the movements. Naturally we can drink copious amounts of alcoholic beverages (or as little as you want (good idea, MYT  Wink/being sarcastic ) or none) during the evening. If you do or do not want a meal, please reply to this thread.

3) Proceed to the hotel for the night. I am currently awaiting replies from a few hotels concerning a group discount. At the moment, the SAS Radisson (connected to the airport terminal by a walkway; visit www.sasradisson.com) is probably the best choice, but it’s also expensive. I’ll let you know the prices ASAP. If you do or do not require accommodation, please reply to this thread.

4) Meet up in reception (of whichever hotel) for breakfast the next morning (perhaps 0800; this will be confirmed);

5) At about 0930, hopefully have a tour of tour of Northern Executive Aviation situated in the cargo area, which offers superb close-up views of both the runways and taxiways. There will be a charge for this, of which I will know soon. If you wish to go on this tour or if you don’t, please reply to this thread.

6) Return to the excellent visitors’ area and spend the rest of the day there, until you must bid farewell and go your separate way.

Please do note that the above is subject to both confirmation and change. I am confident that I can confirm tours and the hotel within a week or so – so I will obviously let you know when I know. Naturally you can provisionally add your name and change if necessary later.

Please reply adding your username to the relevant sections. This is really important. Please copy and paste the heading, like '1) I will be coming:' and then add your username. I will update the list every day or two, so we know who is coming and who’s doing what.

1) I will be coming:

2) I will try my hardest to arrive at the car park spectators’ area by 0930:

Pe@rson

3) I will not be there by 0930. I will hopefully arrive at:

4) I would like to go on the tours (if you only want to go on certain aircraft, please say which. If you don’t, I will assume you want to go on all of them):

6) I would like to have a sit-down meal or BBQ, whichever can be arranged:

Pe@rson

9) I will not be requiring accommodation:

Again, please do note that the above itinerary is subject to both confirmation and change. I am confident that I can confirm tours and the hotel within a week or so – so I will obviously let you know when I know. Naturally you can provisionally add your name and change if necessary later.

I am very confident that the weekend will be both excellent and memorable, so why miss out on it? COME ALONG AND ENJOY!

It is called advertising and it is done to generate recognition and interest. Not everyone who visits the civil-aviation forum visits this forum; not everyone who visits the photography forum visits this one; and so forth. I'll stick with three for now.

How unfair was that decision? If it was not for this website, these get-togethers would not be possible. Consequently, the owners and 'managers' of this website should be grateful that there is such a community spirit and accordingly permit the multi-posting to attract even more people and thereby further this all-important spirit. If it does not, it could be fairly and justly assumed that they're not bothered about it. I will keep them. If you don't like it, tough. In the words of JTW: "Tell him to **** off." Ooops, looks like I just did.  Smile

Well, I guess I got told..riiight..

You can bitch about community all you want, but the fact of the matter is, its not necessary to post it in every damn forum..

http://www.airliners.net/discussions/rules.main?confirm=no

Rule 18:

"Never post the same topic in more than one forum.
Always check past topics to be sure that the topic you are about to start hasn't already been posted. You can do this with a simple forum search using the relevant keywords. If your topic has already been posted and you'd like to add to the discussion, please do so under the existing topic.
PLEASE do not start a new topic UNLESS the prior one has been LOCKED. For example, the subject "What is the Safest Commercial aircraft?" has been discussed many times. A simple search will most likely answer your questions. "

I suppose he could get around it by making each thread different and relevant to the forum.. e.g. in the photography forum making it have something to do with photography..  Smile

There are 9 forums. I posted it in 3. Thus 'The fact of the matter is, its not necessary to post it in every damn forum.' is evidently flawed. Grow up. If you don't like it, complain like a little girl.

LOL. You'll find that I only posted them in three forums: civil aviation, photography and here. I have no need to post them in any of the other forums. I deliberately chose those three because they're the most frequented and thus the most conducive to gaining interest.

LOL!

Try BMI Regional's ERJs from EDI/GLA-MAN. I flew MAN-GLA-MAN at Xmas and had a thoroughly nice trip, although it was only 40 mins each way. If you try to book two one-way tickets, you should be able to get it for £40 or so, but then it might be more on a weekend, as more people want to fly.

I thought of that, but by the time I drive to GLA, check-in, fly down and get my shit together at the other end I'd be looking at a good 3 hours anyway - I can drive it in about the same.

I like the idea of having the car handy anyway, a car always comes in handy for a quick trip into the city centre if the need arises - I could take a real fancy for a donner kebab at any time!

Gimme a minute till I look at the map, I'll probably be able to make a diversion.

I'm fully prepared however for you to be making a twat out of me by suggesting a 200 mile diversion!

Pe@rson,

I very well could make a diversion - if you pay for the difference in petrol (about 6 quid each way) I'm happy to do it.

It'll mean GKirk getting up mighty early (how does 5 am sound kirky?) but I have no problem otherwise.

Let me know.

Regards,
Gordon.

PS: I thought you lived in Devon/Wales anyway?

It's not all that much out of the way in the great scheme of things, and it'll be nice to get off the motorway for a while anyway.

I'm going to be leaving fairly early anyway - I want to avoid all the summer weekend traffic, even if it means going for a couple of hours sleep in between "social functions".

As long as Gkirk gets out of his pit in time, everything should run smoothly as far as the travel goes.

I'll probably leave home about 4 am, get to GKirk about 4.45-ish (that means getting up at 4am kirky, not 5 as predicted! Depending on how quick you can get ready of course), reach york about 7.30, and be in MAN for between 9.30 and 10 am.

Regards,
Gordon.

NEWS FLASH:

The BBQ will be going ahead on the 10th July from about 5pm. We will be able to watch the aircraft from the area:

Our large beer garden, about the size of half a football pitch to the rear, over-looks the runway which is less than 50 feet away. !!!!!

The price for the BBQ has not yet been finalised, but it will be a maximum of £2.50 each.

The Airport Hotel has two rooms available should you wish to stay there. They have one single room (at £20) and one twin-bedded room (at £35, so £17.50 each). Viewing the movements? Well, guests can take advantage of a “private viewing balcony” from where “they can see most of the runway and airport.” (!!) I will be requiring one of the twin-bedded rooms. Will anyone share with me? If yes and if anyone wants the single room, please let me know ASAP as I need to reserve the rooms.

RE: Mega MAN Meet - Official Thread (part 1)

Updated plan:

1) Meet at 0930 (if not possible, please state your ETA in this thread) at the car park spectators' area (where there’s a good view of the movements) and proceed to the excellent visitors’ area (visit http://www.manchesterairport.co.uk/web.nsf/Content/ViewingPark) near the runways (by public bus). Spend the day there watching the movements, while sunning ourselves;

2) Go to the seemingly excellently-located pub (The Airport Hotel; visit www.airporthotel.freeserve.co.uk) about 1700 (5pm) for a BBQ (the cost per person will be a maximum of £2.50; I envisage a lower price per person). We can take advantage of the evening sun and warmth. If you require vegetarian food, please let me know. We can watch the movements from where the BBQ will be held:

"Our large beer garden, about the size of half a football pitch to the rear, over-looks the runway which is less than 50 feet away." !!!!!

I'll let you know what group discount I get when I get it.

The Airport Hotel has two rooms available for the night of the 10th: one single (£20) and one twin-bedded room (£35; one bed has already gone, but I'd like to share - it'll cost you £17.50). Guests can take advantage of a “private viewing balcony” from where “they can see most of the runway and airport.”

If you do or do not require accommodation, please reply to this thread.

4) Meet up in reception (of whichever hotel) for breakfast the next morning (perhaps 0800; this will be confirmed);
