But hey-he is the exact opposite to Bill Gates-he give people good quality stuff at a price that is so low that as many people as possible can afford it-unlike Microsoft, which is both unethical, has monopolies and charges the eart-it is still good old IKEA, with only 160odd stores worldwide who is best. And all this from a man, who at 16 registered the name IKEA when he sold matchsticks at the local market. Well done Ingvar, and remember your old saying "most things still remain to be done, in all, a glorious future". With this in mind IKEA is set to grow even further, and even when I leave IKEA, I will still be a huge fan, and follow the company closely! THe IKEA story is a one of amazement, joy, pain, and learning to do things differently-with one key goal- To create a better every day living for the many people"

Hey I worked for IKEA. Great company and great people (mostly). However, I would not call their products "quality stuff." It was affordable and stylish furniture.

I'm familiar with most on your list. How did #3 (Karl and Theo) come into their money?

According to CNBC & Mr. Kamprad the only way his net worth could be anywhere near the 53 Billion claim by the Swedish magazine is if you included all of the interests that he's given away to charities over the last 20 years. As commendable as it is, he's given away to charity somewhere in the neighborhood of US$35 Billion at present values. But in the end, since those holdings are no longer in his possession, most rankings do not consider them.

On a side note, I think those reporters might have worked for Donald Trump at one time or another... "I only own 10% of that building??? Well, tell Forbes I own 70% so I will make 'The List'."

It seems to be an accounting mistake...

...the stores don't belong to him personally, and the statistic indicates that they do.

One thing is certain, Ingvar is a smart man...

Kamprad has a reputation for frugality and lives in Switzerland where, as a resident, he is not subject to Sweden's taxes, which are among the highest in the world.

Racko: According to the website, with 700 out of the 5,000 Aldi markets in the US, it'd be a bit of an understatement to say they're just "growing"  Laugh out loud. We don't have any in Massachusetts yet but I have heard of them.

Aldi definitely made a huge impact in Ireland, where they, together with Lidl, broke the grocery monopoly of Dunnes Stores and Tesco.

BTW, much of my furniture comes from Ikea. One thing I like about their products is that they continue certain items for a long time. I can always get add-ons for my bookshelves if I run out of space, even though I bought the first section almost 20 years ago.

Charity? I do not like charity at all.

MITaero: do you know how much IKEA gives to charity? ANd Ingvar was a Nazi sympathiser in his youth. Now each store has its own nominated charities. We give millions to Unicef and other charities. When you consider how much MS has spare, its not a great deal. IM not geoing into a IKEA/MS debate. IKEA is a MUCH smaller company than MS.

And IKEA products are of a high quality. Since the 1960s, the IKEA products have 'Mobelfactor' (not too sure of the spelling) which came from a review of Swedens leading home furnishings magazine, which proved that IKEA products are of a high quality at a low price. IKEAs costs are lower, so if you comapre a £500 sofa from IKEA< and a £500 sofa from Marks and Spencer Lifestore, the IKEA one would be of a better quality as a greater % of the cost goes into the actual sofa, and not expensive overheads, or large profit margins. 'Throw away products' are not IKEA. ANd when you think about ir, the place has curtains for £3.50, so I doubt you would expect those to last forever.

I'm just saying that IKEA probably isn't the only company in the world with that goal.. so it's not really fair to be vicious to any other company  Smile

Bofredrik-actually IKEA is totally against worker exploitation-it makes suppliers sign a contract promising fair treatment to all workers, and no child labour and agree that an IKEA representitive will turn up totally unannounced to ensure that the supplier does keep up. So im sorry, 'companies like IKEA' (I take it you mean a multinational) may explout, but IKEA itself does not.

YEah true, other companies may do that, but not at a price that as many people as possible can afford it. And I dunnu, but Ace OF Base (swedish band) Singer 'Ulf' was also a Nazi fan so I dont know if it a Swedish youth thing, but IKEA is a great place to work if you are gay, or black, or a Jew (all the things a Nazi symphasyser would hate), because Ingvar has ensured that IKEA as a workplace is one which is fair and treats all equally. I am going to be in a two page spread inthe company worldwide employee magazine ("ReadME"-which was commissioned by Ingvar) about bein gay in IKEA-and im sure if Ingvar was still a Nazi fan then surely he would do something to stop it as Seniou Advisor to the company. We all do weired stuff when we are young, so I dont see why people stil keep harking on about it
