Chicago Deep Dish Pizza

Wed Apr 21, 2004 2:30 am

This is for any of you who have been or live in ORD.

I am planning a trip there Sunday and half the day Monday and will be staying out by the airport. I am planning on taking the Blue Line Downtown and was seeking advise were the best closest to the line Deep Dish Pizza can be had.

If you know of a place I would be grateful for the information.

hmm not sure about ORD, but if you catch a train to MDW Giordanos is a short 10 min walk from the GA side of the airport. I'd say Giordanos is probably the best deep dish to be had in chicago. Im sure there is one close to ORD, perhaps even inside. best deep dish pizza in chicago,

Since I live in a strip-mall suburb, I'm gonna g ahead and recommend the suburban option- Pizzeria Uno.

Well, the original is Pizzaria Uno, on the near north side, but chain locations all over the place, heck, I was at one in Dayton, OH a year ago! There is one AT ORD, but the original is at 29 E Ohio in Chicago. www.pizzariauno.com for locations and phone #'s

Personally, I think the best deep dish is Gino's East. Pan, w/ crumbled sausage. Again, original is on the near north side, but franchises all over the city and 'burbs. Original is at 633N. Wells, closest to ORD would be the Rosemont location though. website is www.ginoseast.com

Giordanos is, I think a close second behind Ginos and Uno. Though, after spending 2 summers in Jersey, where all they have is New York style "pizza" I have to agree with Superfly, there is NO comparison.

Chicago style pizza is a MEAL; one piece and you're full, two and you're stuffed. Don't know about 3; I've never been able to eat more than 2!

I have to say that I think Gino's East is the best and Pizzeria Uno is by far the worst.

Can you believe people out here consider Numero Uno Chicago Style pizza?  Wow!
You can taste the metal can there pizza sauce comes out of.

It's as Chicago style as Taco Bell is authentic Mexican food.  Pissed

Illini_152 knows what he's talking about.  Smile
Gino's and Giordanos are great pizza places. Also explore some of the neighboorhoods and randomly seek out some independant Italian restaurants.

I used to deliver pizza for Gino's East in Orland Park, and I can attest that Gino's has the $#!+tiest management in the world, and I don't think it changes from one place to another. Don't ever work at one!!!
I don't know, so this is my signature.

Gino's East is great, but Lou Malnati's is better. They have a location in downtown Chicago over on 439 N. Wells. BTW, Giordano's isn't really deep dish in the true sense of the word, it's actually stuffed pizza.

AHHHHH!!! you are making me hungry for this stuff. Now I will have to plan a trip back to my hometown to get some of it, yeah its good, real good, but what makes it better is when you drink a cold Old Style with it. All you ORD people out there know what I mean.

Mmmmm- Pizza, gyros, Old Style, while were mentioning Chicago specialty foods-

Don't youse guys forget to mention Italian beef! Spotty to find, best is usually found at the small Greek hotdog stands. Portillos is a pretty good chain, though my personal favorite for beef is Carms, a small chain of butcher shops on the near west side.

Chicago-style hot dog- mustard, sweet relish, chopped onions, tomatoes, sport peppers, dill pickle and a dash of celery salt, all on a poppy seed bun.

Maxwell Street Polish- 1 Vienna beef polish sausage, deep fried, served on a poppy seed bun with mustard, grilled onions, and 2 sport peppers.

I think that covers some of my favorites. Anybody else got any they'd like to mention.

I had some "Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza" somewhere southwest-ish of downtown near a Hooters. It was the most vile, vulgar, obscene food item I've ever eaten and I felt I immediately needed gastric bypass surgery afterward. For someone who doesn't eat a lot of cheese on a regular basis, I highly recommend avoiding Chicago style pizza. I thought I was going to die.

Personally, I favor Carmen's Pizza over Giordano's, but Carmen's is located only in Evanston, and near Loyola University (both north of the city).

I'd suggest going to Giordano's or Uno's (or its sister restaurant Due). All are wonderful. Be aware that while all of the restaurants I mentioned serve "Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza", Giordano's and Carmen's differ from Uno's/Due in that the former two bake their crust, while the latter two seem to "fry" their crust, creating a much different texture.

Mmmm...this is making me so hungry! I'm glad Carmen's is less than a mile from where I am now Smile.

Take the Blue line to Washington then the Red line to Grand (going north I believe). Head up stairs to the street level, walk back towards the "Webber Bar-B-Que restaraunt" Keep going to you get to Ontario. Left on Ontario, 3 blocks up you will see and be prepared for one of the best pies you will ever have!.
Genos east is a Chicago Legend! with Graffitti all over the walls! Great Pies.
Their Chocolate Chip Cookies for desert are the great too!
I fly up there from DFW all the time for lunch!

Great thanks a lot now I am HUNGRY!!!  Smile
