Make it, only 30% down, imagine what the figure would have been if the dollar wasn't as cheap as it is and has been in the last year, compared to the year previous to those 2.5 years.

I guess the new restrictions placed in Europe (especially the UK) will only reduce it further

Yes, you are right Manni. I think that many Americans don't realize that this drop in tourism has probably prevented the creation of a few houndred thousand jobs, at a time when any new job is welcome in the US, even as the unemployment rate is not as alarming as some might try to make it.

I think people tend to have fickle fealings, and if the US deviced a system to make entry to the US faster, but MORE IMPORTANTLY less overtly incriminating (the current system treats the vast majority of harmless visitors with xenosuspicity, regardless of what some may think), people would start visiting in more normal numbers.

Well the US only got what it asked for!

It has introduced so-called securitysystems that are over the top - have greatly reduced civil liberties. A TSA service that does it outmost to intimidate everyone - and have elected a mad Texan as president - I think they should count themselves lucky that it only a 30% drop!

I know of no-one who would go to the US at present. Previously a lot of friends would go regularly.

I can only expect the tourismfigure to continue to drop.

I wonder what the stats are the other way around? I know a couple of people that just returned this past weekend to the US from a vacation in Europe. I know they were concerned about making the trip over there before they went.

Ryefly,

It's a good point you bring up but the statistics US to Europe will take time because the new terrorist threat there is only about a month or so old. Quite honestly my fear level is a little higher since March 11th, and with the scares in France and England.

I think the weak dollar is still the major factor in people's decision making about going to Europe, and that has not really been a huge consideration anyways, as far as I have seen.

I wonder what the stats are the other way around?

Total international tourist arrivals in Europe increased by 5.9% from 2002.

Total US tourist arrivals in Europe decreased by 0.9% from 2002.

So people who would otherwise go to the US may be preferring to go Europe?

I would like to see the numbers - since 5.9% in Europe might be the same as 30% is in the US. I don't know.
