Traveling To MSY And JFK Next Week

Fri Apr 23, 2004 8:44 am

I will be in MSY on 4/30 and 5/1, and in the JFK area on 5/2 and 5/3.

Would appreciate any tips on sights to see and the best spotting areas near the airports.

Here's a previous post I made on a similar topic....

"Actually, there aren't too many places to spot. If aircraft are landing on Runway 19 (or departing on 1), you can get within a few feet...literally...of the taxi way on some side roads North of the field. They are kind of hard to find if you aren't familiar with the area though, but it makes for a really interesting vantage point.

Another decent option is the Laketown recreation area by the Treasure Chest casino. There is a big fishing pier out over the lake which gives you a nice view of aircraft on final approach onto Runway 19...about 1 1/2 miles out from the runway."

If you have a rental car, drive to the Wingate Inn (just North of the field) and then drive behind the hotel going back towards the terminal. You'll see the side streets, lots of light industrial in the area. Look for the big adult book store and drive to the end of that street.

It might be easier to find the pier by the casino. Leave the airport via the airport access road, take a right on Veterans Blvd, then take a left on Williams Blvd (the first major interchange you come to). Go straight down Williams for about 2 miles until you reach the lake. Easy to find.

Let me know if I can be of any further help.

Diamond, have you ever been to NYC before? Do you need tips on what sights to see as a tourist?

As for spotting, Art Brett's site has a great map with all the spots.

http://www.anniebees.com/Photos/SpottingJFK.htm.

Before you go to to JFK, check this site to see what runway they are using.

Enjoy!

As for sights to see in MSY....

Check out www.neworleansonline.com

There are tons of things to see and do here.

Be sure to go to Jazz Fest if you have the time. And be sure to explore the French Quarter and take a riverboat cruise on the Mississippi.

In all seriousness... by far the best place for spotting at MSY is the parking lot of the "Airline Adult Bookstore". I kid you not, the lot fence is less than 200ft from the threshold of Rwy19.

What is the Airline Adult bookstore, out of curiosity?  Smile

ConcordeBoy,

Isn't that place likely to get raided or something? Any other worthwhile places?

Rjpieces,

I've been to NYC a few times, and know the sights within Manhattan. But I was thinking more of aviation-related places. Books, models, and good spotting areas. We're doing a corporate fitness video, and I will need a break from all of that.

Just a nudie book store that happens to be next to an airport and have its mailbox on Airline Highway.... hence the name  Big grin

Huh  Confused  Confused

Any other worthwhile places?

To get an idea of what I speak: I suggest you search the MSY pictures on this site... particularly those by Andy Jung (who's gotten by far the most accepted). 99% of his pics were taken from that spot.

I will probably go out to MSY on the afternoon and evening of 4/30. Hope to get some good sun and some good photos at the same time. My buddies are going to hit the Quarter and I'll be free to do my own stuff.

Still need more information on NYC/JFK aviation interests, however.

Don't think I'll be doing anything Friday... could show you around the place if you want (could prolly russle-up Tom & Steve too, as they'll more than likely be there as well).

Who are Tom & Steve?

If you want to "e" me your contact #, I'll call you when I'm in the general area.

We're doing a photo shoot in the city on 4/30. Scheduled to start at 6:00am and end around 2:30pm. Will need to shower, etc. Then head to the airport.

What camera do you use? I'm bringing a D100, brand new. Still figuring it out.

Steve (Frontier) and I (airport operator) both work at MSY. I can probably work something in on Friday if you want to run around the airfield a bit. My email's on my profile if you want to set something up.

Unfortunately, there aren't many good aviation stores in NYC....Would you be willing to take a drive to Fairfield NJ? If so, there is a store there called the Airplane Shop () that has tons of models and books.

As for spotting areas, did you check out that site I linked? That has the maps of all the spotting areas at JFK. What hotel are you staying at....?

The only other aviation related place in that area that I could think for you to go would be Floyd Bennet Field in Brooklyn. They still have old WWII hangards and buildings, and even some old planes. It is easy to get there and if you are into history, it might be cool for you.

Sorry I could not be of more help...I'll let you know if I think of more stuff....Do you want restaurant tips?  Smile

Drop me an email if you'd like.

Rjpieces,

Our whole group is staying at the W Hotel at 54th and Lexington. We're doing our project at Rockefeller Center nearby. I will have a car.

New Jersey isn't a problem.

Will be in touch.
