Owned two Blazers in my life, a '93 and a '97. Family and friends have owned/own some as well.
Both were simply great vehicles. The '93 could take anything I threw at it. I put over a 100K trouble-free miles on that truck.
The '97 in which I recently got rid of in favor of my 2003 Tahoe 5.3 was just as good.
Flight152 seems to think they are the satan of vehicles, but I've argued with him time and time again, and he's never gonna shutup about how crappy he thinks they are.
Of course, a lot of people on this board are gonna spout off about how Blazers, and GM vehicles for that matter, are crappy. I wouldn't listen to them, because a lot of them have little or no experience with the subject and will believe anything that the biased Consumer Reports tells them.
From my perspective, and personally over 350,000
miles experience with these Blazers, they are the most underrated SUVs. The 4.3L is without a doubt the best thing about them, it's reliable, out-performs most other SUV
V6s, and is pretty fuel efficient. It's based on the GM
which is also one of the best engines they've produced.
The biggest issues you're gonna have with the Blazer are the interior cheapness and the front suspension is a little weak. I rebuilt the front suspension of my '93 and replaced the balljoints on my '97. It's really not too big of a task. The interior is cheap like most GMs, but it comes at a cheap price. This is not a fancy SUV
If you can find a good buy on one, I would personally recommend it. But if you have more $$$, go for the Trailblazer. It's a new design, more powerful, and bigger than the ol S10 Blazers.
Both are great vehicles, and I think you'll be happy with whatever you choose!

Some people are like slinkies - not good for anything, but they bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs
