What Do You Think Of The Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Sun Apr 25, 2004 11:50 am

In light of the slew of recent car/ SUV topics here in the non-av forum, I figured that I'd add to the buzz.

My question is, what is your opinion on the Jeep Grand Cherokee (either model; the 93-98 or the 99-current)? My family has owned 3 Grand Cherokees since 1995, and just recently junked the last one in favor for a 2004 Liberty (yuck!). Two of the GC's were some of the best cars my family has owned, mechanically. We bought a 1994 Grand Cherokee Laredo in early 1995, and kept that until 1998, and slapped on over 170,000 miles on that car. It had the smooth 4.0 6-cyl., and 4WD. Gotta have 4x4 here in Upstate NY. That car performed like a beast in the snow. Then we got a 1999 Grand Cherokee in September 1998. It was, ironically, the EXACT same as the 1994 model- 4.0L 6-cyl, white, 4x4. Except it had a CD player. Ooh, luxury. That car was a piece of crap. It was in the shop more than we drove it. The transmission went at 24,000 miles or so, and the doors had that automatic locking system, which didn't do it's job (most of the time). The 4WD continuously stuck on, etc, etc. That car was by far the worst one we've ever owned, according to my father, along with a 1987 Grand Caravan (oh my god, it was a Chrysler, too! What a surprise!). Then the one we got rid of last September was a 2001 Grand Cherokee Limited, in black, with the 4.7L V8. Got marginal gas mileage, but it was a great car. We kept that for exactly two year (to the day, literally. I remember it was 2 months after my 16th birthday, the 26th of September.) I learned to drive in that car, and wish I could afford one, instead of my Subaru. We piled on almost 70,000 miles on that.

That said, did/do any of you here in the forums own a Grand Cherokee? Did you have a great one, like our 1994, or a lemon, like our 1999? (Damn Chryslers, lol.) My parents have always had a Jeep, since they were married, and still remain fiercely loyal to the Jeep brand. My father even preferred our Grand Cherokees to his Dodge Rams in the snow.

Overrated.

I think it's stupid when people suffer from blind brand loyalty. Not that I care because I'm not the one paying, but if a company produces an inferior product and you stick with it, you're suffering from a severe case of stubborness.

Good, reliable car. Almost bought one myself (but the seller reneged at the last moment), now I'm kind of glad I didn't.

You won't see better than about 21mpg with 'em unless you tinker with them.

All in all, not a bad car. It's not a 4Runner, but it'll hold its own really well. The 93-98 had a lot of reliability problems, but the 99+ are significantly better. The 2005 models look really promising (they don't seem to have followed the crap they did to the Durango. Blecch.)

Agree with you with the "blecch" on the Liberty, though...chick car at best.

Jeeps have been garbage since they where bought out by AMC.

If you want a good jeep you have to go back a few years.

Personally I wouldn't mind owning a Ford Jeep GPA.

Strange,
I just had an '04 Grand as a rental car and I really enjoyed it. V6, lots of power, very comfortable, excellent gas mileage...

My dad owns a Grand Cherokee and to me it is just "nice". It's the first time we own a Jeep and we had a rough start with the brand. Had some problems with the brakes (the "brain" of the engine or whatever was ordering the car to brake slightly, so we had a couple of smokey brakes and overheating of the engine -despite all the fancy electronic indicators and needles were showing normal-).

Once the brakes and overheating things were solved ($$$$$$) it is a nice car with great luxurious interiors but in my opinion VERY underpowered. Maybe I just got used to the performance of my old 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix.

Ohh yeah... almost forgot, one thing I really dislike about the Cherokee is that I can't make the damn seat pre-set function work!!!!

We had the same problem with a 98. Nice interior but it was a lemon.

Jeeps are generally good cars new, but they tend to have a lot of reliability issues once they age a bit. Why can't American car manufacturers seem to build reliable cars. We had an old '87 Toyota Tercel for 13 years, 100k miles on it, and the only work that was every put into it was 2 new mufflers and a brake job.

-My Grandparents bought a brand new 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo when they first came out...quality was good, but it needed a new transmission, etc...
-Then in 1997 they got another brand new one, exactly the same down to the color. My granny didn't like this one as much, she said it didn't drive as nice, and it was built crappier. it's had to have a new transmission as well, and it seems way underpowered.
-My parents bought a used 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and it's always been a little weird. The interior is nice, but the paint seems kinda crappy.

*Just this weekend though, my grandparents got a new car, a 2004 Honda Pilot EX-L, they kept the Jeep for my uncle (he wants it to haul his dogs to and from the dog park) and its got 135,000 miles + plus on it. There was no denying it after doing all the research and driving the cars, you could feel the great build quality of the Honda.*

V6, lots of power

Jeff, I'm pretty sure that the Grands only use the I6 (or V8). Yeah, that's right, almost exactly the same archaic AMC 4.0l inline-6 that's been out for, what, 20 years at least? Rumor has it that for next model year it'll get the new 3.7 Liberty V6 standard, with a Hemi V8 as an option. Should be interesting.

Well, I admire the Jeeps for going their own way. They don't follow trends like some others do, but rather provide a vehicle that is very capable off road, even if it sacrifices some comfort on the road. To me, this creates a much more enjoyable vehicle, and with more character.

I definitely don't like the 2005 Grand Cherokee though.

Oh give me a break! It looks like a damn Durango! They're FUGLY. Although, the grille is a tad nicer than the Durango's  Big grin. The window level looks awkwardly high also. And, Captaingomes, where did you get those pictures, if you don't mind my asking?

I've had 5 or 6 in my fleet here at MSY over the past few years (mainly 93's and 96's). We didn't have too many mechanical problems with any of them, however to me, driving them was like driving an aluminum can.

Seeing the Durango's noted above, I've also got a number of them (Operations and administrative types, 2000 to present, 16 all told). Not a bad vehicle, but becoming a maintenance nightmare: lots of front end work needed after about 30,000 miles, and a lot of transmission problems, as well. And the 2004's look like mini-vans.

PanAm330, I first saw the pictures in http://www.vwvortex.com in the forums. They have in "Community", then "The Car Lounge" a great forum where I keep up to date on what's happening in the auto world. It's truly a great forum.

When I tried linking the pictures provided in that thread, they weren't working here on airliners.net, so I did a quick google search for the 2005 Grand Cherokee, and there were a few websites with quite a lot of information on the new vehicles.

Regards, Nuno.

Thanks, Captaingomes. I actually did the same thing after I asked you where you got the pictures.

Actually, at second glance, it doesn't look nearly as horrid as I had thought. But I still feel that it looks like a new-build Durango. I can practically guarantee we'll stick with the Jeep brand, and get- what else- the 2005 Grand Cherokee. My mom "doesn't like how the Liberty drives in the snow." So, chances are, she'll get her wish, and I'll be able to take it for a spin every once and a while  Big grin.

Not bad mechanically IMO, but a tad too "boulevardy" for me. Yuppie stigma.
