In light of the slew of recent car/ SUV
topics here in the non-av forum, I figured that I'd add to the buzz.
My question is, what is your opinion on the Jeep Grand Cherokee (either model; the 93-98 or the 99-current)? My family has owned 3 Grand Cherokees since 1995, and just recently junked the last one in favor for a 2004 Liberty (yuck!). Two of the GC
's were some of the best cars my family has owned, mechanically. We bought a 1994 Grand Cherokee Laredo in early 1995, and kept that until 1998, and slapped on over 170,000 miles on that car. It had the smooth 4.0 6-cyl., and 4WD. Gotta have 4x4 here in Upstate NY. That car performed like a beast in the snow. Then we got a 1999 Grand Cherokee in September 1998. It was, ironically, the EXACT same as the 1994 model- 4.0L 6-cyl, white, 4x4. Except it had a CD
player. Ooh, luxury. That car was a piece of crap. It was in the shop more than we drove it. The transmission went at 24,000 miles or so, and the doors had that automatic locking system, which didn't do it's job (most of the time). The 4WD continuously stuck on, etc, etc. That car was by far the worst one we've ever owned, according to my father, along with a 1987 Grand Caravan (oh my god, it was a Chrysler, too! What a surprise!). Then the one we got rid of last September was a 2001 Grand Cherokee Limited, in black, with the 4.7L V8
. Got marginal gas mileage, but it was a great car. We kept that for exactly two year (to the day, literally. I remember it was 2 months after my 16th birthday, the 26th of September.) I learned to drive in that car, and wish I could afford one, instead of my Subaru. We piled on almost 70,000 miles on that.
That said, did/do any of you here in the forums own a Grand Cherokee? Did you have a great one, like our 1994, or a lemon, like our 1999? (Damn Chryslers, lol.) My parents have always had a Jeep, since they were married, and still remain fiercely loyal to the Jeep brand. My father even preferred our Grand Cherokees to his Dodge Rams in the snow.
