Cigarette Packet Warning Labels

Sun Apr 25, 2004 10:49 pm

Most cigarette packets now have warning labels.
In Australia we have a brand called Winfield and one of the non smoking health messages, "Smoking while pregnant may harm your baby" what is the point of that message to 50% of smokers.

What are some of the messages in your country.

No I don't smoke rather save the money for air travel.

I just bought a carton yesterday, and the same message is on the outside of the carton, as well as on each of the 10 packs inside.....pretty much the same as what you quoted.....

SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING

Smoking by Pregnant Women May Result in Fetal Injury, Premature Birth, and Low Birth Weight.

Thank God I don't have to worry about that  Smile

Having a smoking section in a restaurant is like having a peeing section in a swimming pool.....

Here in Canada, the messages are short, brutal and accompanied by a colour photograph of something nasty like a diseased lung, brain, gum etc..
The also have to cover a fairly significant portion of the packet. (you won't need reading glasses to read these!)
BTW, I am a non-smoker..OK Ex-smoker (quit cold turkey 15 years ago and have not touched one since)

In The Netherlands we have a male equivalent of the pregnacy warning too:
"Roken kan het sperma beschadigen en vermindert de vruchtbaarheid"

Which means: Smoking can damage the sperm and reduces fertility.

I admire the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare for being so imaginative. They probably have like 10-15 different warning labels.

Here's a few:

- Smoking kills
- Smoking can lead to a slow and painful death.
- Smoking can harm the sperm and reduces fertility.
- Smoking seriously hurt yourself and people in your surroundings.

Lucky I do not smoke on a regular basis. Only when I go out partying. Big grin

In the EU, the following warnings are used:

1. Smokers die younger.
2. Smoking clogs the arteries and causes heart attacks and strokes.
3. Smoking causes fatal lung cancer.
4. Smoking when pregnant harms your baby.
5. Protect children: don't make them breathe your smoke.
6. Your doctor or your pharmacist can help you stop smoking.
7. Smoking is highly addictive, don't start.
8. Stopping smoking reduces the risk of fatal heart and lung diseases.
9. Smoking can cause a slow and painful death.
10. Get help to stop smoking: (telephone/postal address/internet address/consult your doctor/pharmacist).
11. Smoking may reduce the blood flow and causes impotence.
12. Smoking causes ageing of the skin.
13. Smoking can damage the sperm and decreases fertility.
14. Smoke contains benzene, nitrosamines, formaldehyde and hydrogen cyanide.

Because after no.11 has occurred, life doesn´t matter any more anyway  Laugh out loud

BTW, the 14 listed above are to be printed on the back, covering 40%.

Additionally, there are two available for the front, covering 30%:

- "Smoking kills/Smoking can kill" or

- "Smoking seriously harms you and others around you"

16 very positive messages, harmonised all across the EU. I´m sure some mid-level beaurocrats in Brussels thought these up after nights and nights of intensive thinking in smoke-filled rooms  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

These warning labels on cigarette packs are nonsense in my opinion, nobody quits smoking because there is a lable on the pack that says: "Smoking kills", "You will die", etc.

I would rather quit because the price for cigarettes increased again in Germany a few weeks ago, a pack Marlboro costs now 3,60 EUR. Good that I bought two cartons (a 200 cigarettes for 25 EUR) in Spain a few weeks ago.

In case someone is interested, here is a picture of these new big warning signs on German (European) cigarette packs:

In English it means "Smoking can kill".

Since a few weeks it is also forbidden to call the brands "Light", "Ultra Light" or "Medium". Some companies found other ways to distinguish between their brands, for example Lucky Strike: The regular Lucky Strike are called "Lucky Strike Red" and the Lucky Strike Lights are called "Lucky Strike Silver" now.

Why quit smoking and live longer, if you are unhappy in your longer life because you cannot smoke?

Over here those labels are much bigger (Around 50% of the front) and a lot on the back. Carrying on from Airsicknessbag's list we also have "Call 0808-000-0000 to help quit" - Not the number because I can't remember it.

I handle those things every time I am in work, still as long as they stay in their packets they won't bother me. Personally they will never make the warnings strong enough - I'd rather they were banned altogether but then again it's taking away peoples rights, and others rights to blow smoke into your face and act like asses.....

How many of you can tell I really loath Cigs???  Big grin

"Fumar puede matar"

I don't speak Spanish so I reckon these ones must be OK to smoke right?

But seriously do we really need these warnings? We know the risks, seems these Health Warnings are all about covering tobacco companies asses and making certain non smokers feel better about themselves. The kind of people that right after they're done burying you come out and say things like "well he was warned!"

As far as all the Healthy living thing goes, as Jack Dee (UK comedian) says, it may well make you live longer but the only years you gain are the ones right at the end where you sit all day long and piss yourself! Now who wants that?

I like the idea a Danish insurance company had a few years ago:

Every nonsmoker of their employees got 3 days extra paid leave a year. The management argued that smokers worked this amount of time less every year due to smoking breaks.
I had a similar experience years ago during my college time when I was working part time on a construction site. I was the only non smoker, and the smokers would disappear every hour for about ten minutes or so to have their fags. The foreman, who was a smoker as well, told me that I had to continue to work, because I didn´t "need" a fag.

I still hate it today if there is work to be done and the smokers wantto f+ck off to get their cigarettes.

P.S.
During my apprenticeship my chief instructor used to be a rabid nonsmoker. Everytime he saw some apprentices standing outside smoking he would ask them immidiately if they didn´t have some work to do. If they answered no, he would give them something to do, usualy something nasty.

I think all form of warnings should be replaced by IMPOTENCY.

That would scare there hell out of most people  Big thumbs up. I bet many people would rather die that having a tool that doesn't work.

In Ireland they have the best cigarette warnings ever:

SMOKING KILLS

SMOKING DECREASES BLOOD FLOW AND CAN CAUSE IMPOTENCE

etc...

they also have the worst public service announcments.

11. Smoking may reduce the blood flow and causes impotence. That's bad.
13. Smoking can damage the sperm and decreases fertility. That's good.

I think the makers should be required to put a label on cigarettes that says "Smoking makes you smell as bad as an Alabama outhouse in July." That might work better.
