What Do You Hate About Being Unemployed?

Wed Apr 28, 2004 2:41 am

I've been looking for a job now for several months with very little luck, and what do I hate the most?

Job postings that say 'We thank you for applying but only those selected for an interview will be contacted.' Loosely translated, go ahead and pour your heart and soul into a cover letter, and we'll likely just totally ignore you. For the close to 100 jobs I've applied to, other than the 5 interviews I've gotten, only one person wrote me back. And he just wanted to rub it in my face that I made a mistake in the cover letter. What a sadistic SOB!!!

Anyone else hate being out of work?

Did any of you say that you wanted a job?

I can give you two different jobs if you want. The hand one is free, but the oral one is gonna cost you!

After I finished my Master's in December I wasn't working for about a month, before I went back to my old part-time job at a major retailer which will remain nameless for now. The worse part of being jobless is the sheer boredom. You can spend a far amount of time sifting through the classifieds, calling people, and shipping out resumes. But in the course of a day that doesn't take too much time. I ended up going to bed really late... usually between 1 and 3 am and sleeping till noon, feeling kind of down, and just plain bored to tears.

I had started my job hunt process last June (I was scheduled to graduate last December). And it can become downright frustrating. It feels like you are submitting resumes into some giant void where nothing comes back. You read the job descriptions and qualifications and think you are a decent fit for the job. Every now and then you get something in the mail saying that they received your application, or rejected you, or want you to fill out an EEO form. The one thing about a job search is that you need to expect that it is going to suck.... unless you are well connected or have a decent amount of experience that makes you more attractive. Working, even if it is just part-time, while job hunting is not a bad idea. Gives you something to do as well as some income.

DesertJets, yup, bang-on, thats the exact feeling I have. Luckily I'm doing freelance work and that takes up some time and keeps me moving, but man oh man the boredom is killing me.

Jcs17, do those jobs pay well? (satire)
