Any Free PC To Phone Programs Left?

Thu Apr 29, 2004 5:51 am

Does anybody know of any free PC-to-Phone programs that are out there? I have found about six billion, but they all cost money...

So if anybody does know, I'd love to know...

Hello LY772,
Truly impossible since the link is partly on an phone operator's network and this one charges for "terminating" the call, i.e. for completing the loop.
Callanyware works quite well and is very inexpensive.

Qlguy24,

Free calling is only possible as long as the loop (sender to receiver and vice-versa) remains on the internet.
Skype, Yahoo, MSN messenger and many other programs allow this, sometimes with first-class quality (eg. Skype).
As soon as the loop includes telephone operators' lines (fixed or wireless), a $ counter starts clicking.

In public telephony, when a call is placed from a party in network A towards a party in network B, the calling party is charged by both A and B.
B is the originating network, B the terminating network.
In your phone bill you see only the cumulated charges, but you are charged by both.

I live in Israel. If I want to speak to someone in the US, I should tell them to download Skype (I have it) and then we speak for free as long as we want?

Hello LY772,
Sorry, I saw your reply but did not figure out at first that it was a question.

You have Skype installed on your PC and your correspondent as well: you can talk (and exchange text messages) as long as you want, free of charge, YES.
I assume that you have no internet connection time charges.

Requirements for Skype:W2000 or XP, a 64kbps connection.

Note: apparently Skype will not remain free of charge for a long time. I believe they are in the last stages of beta-testing and will thereafter charge a fixed.
Still the quality is usually (much) superior to regular phone, so if you use it regularly for international connections, it should very well remain a perfect alternative.
Many people are using it for professional purposes...
